Actun Tunichil Muknal Caves - belize
-- Cave exploration in cayo belize with oscar
Actun Tunichil Muknal, Cayo District, Belize - November 28, 2010
Actun Tunichil Muknal is a cave in Belize, near San Ignacio Cayo, notable as a Maya archaeological site that includes skeletons, ceramics, and stoneware. The most famous of the human remains is known as The Crystal Maiden, the skeleton of a teenage girl, probably a sacrifice victim, whose bones which have been completely calcified by the natural processes of the cave, leaving them with a sparkling crystallized appearance. There are several areas of skeletal remains in the main chamber.
The ceramics at the site are significant partially because they are marked with kill holes, which indicates they were used for ceremonial purposes. Many of the Mayan artifacts and remains are completely calcified to the cave floor. The Mayans also modified cave formations here. Some to create altars for the offerings, others created silhouettes of faces and animals, some projecting a shadow image in the cave. The cave is extensively decorated with cave formations in the upper passages.
Animal life in the cave includes a large population of bats, large fresh water crabs, crayfish, catfish and other tropical fish, Large invertebrates like Amblypygi and various predatory spiders also inhabit the cave. Agouti and Otters may also use the cave. This and many other species are quite common in river caves of this size in Belize.
Wikipedia couldn't have described it better.

Belize: The Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave Hike
The tour of the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave involved a 2-mile hike through the forest and over a river and a one-hour hike through a cave with a river running through it. It was a fascinating experience, especially being able to view the Mayan pottery and human remains deep inside the cave.
GHOST HUNTING IN ACTUN TUNICHIL MUKNAL!
Actun Tunichil Muknal, also known as Xibalba, is located near the San Ignacio district of Belize. It was used by ancient Mayans for sacrifices. In the cave there are several skeletons, ceramics and stoneware. The cave is about 3 miles long but tourists only get to see a third of it. Archaeologists have access to the rest. The cave's upper passage called The Cathedral (which you see in this video) is located about 1/3 of the way in.
This truly was the coolest thing I've ever done. I'd love to go back and explore it again! I went with a tour group called Pacz tours. They were great and I'd definitely recommend them!

Our trip to and through the ATM cave in Belize. The ancient Mayan site is a sacred location. and as such, was a place where human sacrifices were performed. The cave is located in Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve near San Ignacio, and is almost as challenging to reach as it is to explore. Guides took us across three rivers, and then you have to swim into the entrance of the cave. Once you enter, you are basically wading (sometimes swimming if you are short) through an underground river. To get to the archaelogical sites, one must crawl through small openings in the rock, climb up a sheer cliff and navigate (in sock feet so as not to disturb priceless remains) through a rocky cavern. According to Wikipedia, National Geographic listed it as #1 on their list of Top 10 Sacred Caves. It's VERY dark inside, lit only by the helmet torches, so the video quality reflect that.
