Robert Fergusson Gravestone Canongate Kirkyard Edinburgh Scotland
Tour Scotland video of the Robert Fergusson Gravestone in Canongate Kirkyard, Royal Mile, on ancestry visit to Edinburgh. The gravestone was raised by Robert Burns who, on visiting Edinburgh twelve years after Fergusson's death, was shocked to find no memorial stone over the poet's grave. Burns commissioned the stone from Robert Burn, the architect who later designed the Nelson Monument on the Calton Hill. It was erected in 1792 with lines on it written by Burns: No sculptured marble here, nor pompous lay, No storied urn, nor animated Bust; This simple stone directs Pale Scotia's way; To pour her Sorrows o'er the Poet's Dust.
The surname Fergusson was first found in Galloway, Gaelic: Gall-ghaidhealaibh, an area of southwestern Scotland, now part of the Council Area of Dumfries and Galloway, that formerly consisted of the counties of Wigtown, West Galloway, and Kirkcudbright, East Galloway, where they were descended from the Prince of Galloway who married the daughter of King Henry I of England. These ancient Lords of Galloway were independent rulers until they were annexed by Scotland in 1234. Alan, Prince of Galloway, was the last of the line. The Craigdarroch branch was the oldest but they also had branches at Cowal, Kintyre, Kilkerran, Atholl, Kinmundy, Pitfour.
The Ayrshire Fergusons, who descended from Fergus, the independent 12th century Lord of Galloway, were established in the Southwest of Scotland even before they received their charter from Bruce, the King of Scotland, in the 13th century. Furthermore, numerous families of the name Ferguson were established throughout Scotland at an early date. In Argyll, where the Ferguson Clan is particularly numerous, the Fergusons held lands in Strachur until the beginning of the 19th century. The Fergussons of Perthshire were recognized as the principal Highland branch of the Clan and the chieftainship belonged to the Dunfallandy family, the head of which was designated MacFhearghuis.

Vlog 22 - Adventures in Eyemouth - Mustangs & Smugglers is part of my behind the scenes, working on the BBC content channel, antiques road trip. I travel all over the country and when the opportunity takes me, I shoot some historical visits, aerial content and some nice classic cars.
This visit was in Eyemouth and in particular, Gunsgreen House. This John Adam house was built in 1753 with a plethora of fascinating secrets. Today it is a historic house, visitor attraction, and self-catering accommodation.
Built by local smuggler and merchant John Nisbet in the 1750s, Gunsgreen House was described in the eighteenth century as a splendid palace built by a smuggler.
Eyemouth was a hotbed of the smuggling trade, with John Nisbet at the centre and explore the vaulted cellars where he kept his goods, both honestly traded and otherwise!

Scottish Resistance Flash Mob for Scottish Independence
Scottish Independence
Sir Geoff Palmer : Flag Up Scotland Jamaica Launches Petition to Scottish Parliament
Flag Up Scotland Jamaica launched a petition calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to create a formal bilateral partnership with Jamaica, making it a Priority Country for trade and international development as a means of acknowledging that trade with Jamaica has contributed significantly to the foundations of economic growth and prosperity in Scotland and recognising that Scotland should now seek to advance the prosperity of Jamaica.
The petition has the support of Anne McLaughlin, MP for Glasgow North East and Sir Geoff Palmer, Jamaican Professor Emeritus at Heriot Watt University.
Scotland has many links with Jamaica and these begin with Scottish prisoners of war from the Battle of Dunbar and the Jacobite Rebellions being exiled to Jamaica. Later many Scots came to make their fortunes in the slave economy. The consequence is that there is a greater frequency of Scottish surnames in Jamaica than in countries like Canada or New Zealand. A large number of place names in Jamaica are Scottish and include Glasgow, Kilmarnock, Elgin, Roxborough and Culloden. More recently in 1962, a Scottish missionary in Jamaica, William McGhie was responsible for the inclusion of the saltire in the Jamaican flag.
The petition highlights that between 1760 and 1830 the Scottish economy grew from one of the weakest in Europe to becoming one of the most powerful. Profits were made from vast amounts of Jamaican sugar as the old sugar sheds that still exist in Greenock today testify. Other industries in Scotland profited in unexpected ways. The import of linen to clothe slaves in Jamaica increased tenfold between 1765 and 1795. Recent research has confirmed that Scottish slave ownership was higher than in any other part of the United Kingdom.
Myths and legends brought to life in Edinburgh Castle light display
(14 Nov 2019) LEAD IN:
Myths and legends are turning Edinburgh's oldest building into a jewel box of dazzling lights and colours.
It's all part of the Castle of Light exhibition which illustrates the 11th century castle's strategic importance throughout history.
STORY-LINE:
Edinburgh Castle, the former home of Scottish royalty built on an extinct volcano, is transformed into the Castle of Light.
Stories of ancient heroes, myths and legends are projected on the castle walls to the sound of Scottish music.
Alastair Young, the director of Warpro which is specialist audio visual company involved in creating the Castle of Light, says the light exhibition took six months to complete and his creative team worked together with Historic Environment Scotland, a public body tasked with promoting Scotland's history.
The whole thing is kind of inspired by the stories of Edinburgh Castle, because it is obviously a historic building. It has got, I don't know, a thousand years of history. There is a military pass, there is a whole of myth and legend and we have tried to put that together and just weave a few stories into that, which is why you have got a dragon in the rocks, because there is this story of the dragon that sort of flew around Edinburgh and then became part of the rocks of Edinburgh says Young.
The giant dragon changes colours while it sleeps on one of the castle's inner walls, and occasionally wakes up to spew fire.
Young says the dragon is based on a myth of a dragon that flew around Edinburgh and terrorised the local community by eating their livestock, and it ate so much that it needed to sleep.
When it finally dozed off it never woke up and it believed by some that the creature still sleeps underneath the city.
The statues of Robert the Bruce and William Wallace guard the entrance to Edinburgh castle and these are brought to life in the light display.
There is also there is a lot of time-lapse footage of basically Scottish landmarks etc, etc projected on the castle, because you know the castle is one of Scotland's great landmarks, explains Young.
Rex Rampant, which is the lion on Scotland's coat of arms comes to life in the exhibition and Young says the team had fun creating its cheeky character.
He is a bit of a cheeky character and he is jumping about the walls. It's the first night for me as well as for the public so it is too early to say which is my favourite part, Young says.
A projection of a Scottish queen welcomes guests to the castle before she dissolves into a colourful display of lights and dancing subjects.
I think she is just the queen of the castle, because every castle needs a queen and I think she comes alive at the very top of the castle in Crown square, which is effectively you know she is giving her permission for everyone, for her subjects, to have a party.
Margaret's chapel was built in the 12th Century and is one of Edinburgh's oldest buildings. The building first turns into a jewel box before the stained glass windows from inside the chapel are projected onto the outside of the building.
Young says around 20,000 tickets for the Castle of Light event have been sold so far. It opens to the public on 14 November and will run for six weeks.
