Fourteen people now known as the Addergoole Fourteen boarded the RMS Titanic.
On April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic struck an iceberg and sank. Seven hundred of the 1500 passengers survived. Only three were from Addergoole.
The parish experienced what is believed to be the disaster's largest proportionate loss of life. The eleven passengers from this community who perished represented 0.3% of the 1911 census population of 3,496 and 2% of all Third Class passengers lost.
Irish town makes peace with Titanic tragedy
Nowhere was the tragedy of the Titanic felt more deeply than in the remote parish of Addergoole, Ireland where it was hardly spoken of for almost 100 years. Now, one of the town's doctors is providing some needed closure by becoming the driving force behind the Addergoole Titanic Society. Mark Phillips reports.

Waking Titanic - Addergoole Fourteen
On Thursday 11th April 1912, one hundred and thirteen steerage passengers (third Class) boarded Titanic at Queenstown (Cobh) in Cork. Fourteen of these passengers were from the Addergoole Parish (Lahardane). Eleven of these fourteen died when RMS Titanic sank on her maiden voyage, east of Newfoundland, having struck an iceberg.
The Mayo passengers are known locally as the Addergoole Fourteen.
The 3 who survived were; Annie Kate Kelly, Delia McDermott, Annie McGowan.
The 11 who perished were; Catherine Bourke, John Bourke, Mary Bourke, Mary Canavan, Pat Canavan, Bridget Donohue, Nora Fleming, James Flynn, Catherine McGowan, Delia Mahon, Mary Mangan.
The loss of these 11 young emigrants represents the largest proportionate loss of life from any single locality on RMS Titanic and more importantly an extraordinary personal, economic and social loss for our small west of Ireland parish.
The Addergoole Titanic Society is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the wonderful memory of fourteen young emigrants from our parish of Addergoole who left Ireland for a better life in America, in 1912, on the ill-fated Titanic. Only three of our fourteen friends and neighbors survived the sinking; Our little village in Mayo has not been the same since.

Titanic's Last Stop - Cobh, Cork, Ireland
Queenstown, now Cobh, a stunning seaport town in Cork on the south coast of Ireland, was also the Titantic's final stop on its last and tragic voyage across the Atlantic. A total of 123 of Titanic's passengers boarded at Queenstown - only 44 survived the sinking of the Titanic. The last local Titanic survivor was from Cork (Ellen Shine) - she passed away at the age of 98 in 1993.
Dedicated to the memory of Captain Colm Morrissy (Master Mariner) whose seafaring journey ended - as Cork Harbour Pilot - in his beloved Cobh on September 3rd 2014.

Drive from Addergoole Cemetery towards Lahardane (part 1 of 2)
First part of the drive from the cemetery down towards the the road that will lead to Lahardane. This eventually brings us to R315 and that can eventually lead the O’Donnell Field on Nephin. That drive is an additional 3.8km route. Back in the early 1900’s this wasn’t done by car but by foot or horse & carriage. Can you even imagine?!?
