Addis Ababa Ethiopia - A look round town
Addis Ababa Ethiopia - A look round town. Emperor Menelik II is regarded by many as one of the greatest Ethiopians of all time. He was often, simultaneously soldier, politician, king, raconteur and some-time brick-layer. This can be seen at the church of Maryam (St. Mary) on Entoto Mountain, in which he has taken part in the building work.Sululta is one of the woredas in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia. It was part of former Mulona Sululta woreda which was separated for Mulo and Sululta woredas. Part of the Oromia Special Zone Surrounding Finfinne, Sululta is bordered on the south by the city of Addis Ababa, on the west by the Mulo and Mirab Shewa Zone, on the north by Semien Shewa Zone, and on the east by Bereh. Towns in Sululta include Chancho, Durba, Muger Sheleko, Rob Gebeya, Sululta and Segno Gebeya. An azmari is an Ethiopian singer-musician, comparable to the European bard or the West African griot. Azmari, who may be either male or female, are skilled at singing extemporized verses, accompanying themselves on either a masenqo (one-stringed fiddle) or krar (lyre). Azmari often perform in drinking establishments called tejbeit, which specialize in the serving of tej (honey mead). The masenqo (also spelled masenko, mesenqo, mesenko, masinko, or masinqo) is a single-stringed bowed lute commonly found in the musical traditions of Ethiopia and Eritrea. The habesha kemis (ሐበሻ habesha, Ethiopian ቀሚስ kemis, tunic, dress [IPA: /k'emiʃɨ/]) is the traditional attire of Habesha.

Addis Ababa (Amharic: አዲስ አበባ? Addis Abäba, IPA: [ädˈdis ˈäbəbä] ( listen), “new flower”; Oromo: Finfinne,[3][4] [fɪnˈfɪ́n.nɛ́] Natural Spring(s)), sometimes spelled Addis Abeba (the spelling used by the official Ethiopian Mapping Authority), is the capital city of Ethiopia. It is the largest city in Ethiopia, with a population of 3,384,569 according to the 2007 population census with annual growth rate of 3.8%. This number has been increased from the originally published 2,738,248 figure and appears to be still largely underestimated.[2][5]
As a chartered city (ras gez astedader), Addis Ababa has the status of both a city and a state. It is where the African Union and its predecessor the OAU are based. It also hosts the headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and numerous other continental and international organizations. Addis Ababa is therefore often referred to as the political capital of Africa due to its historical, diplomatic and political significance for the continent.[6]
The city is populated by people from different regions of Ethiopia – the country has as many as 80 nationalities speaking 80 languages and belonging to a wide variety of religious communities. It is home to Addis Ababa University. The Federation of African Societies of Chemistry (FASC) and Horn of Africa Press Institute (HAPI) are also headquartered in Addis Ababa. (Wikipedia)

Adventures Abroad - Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Took a solo trip and spent a day in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. My friends at Ethiopian Stunning Tours helped make it an awesome day.
Kategna Restaurant - Ethiopian food you shouldn't miss in Addis Ababa
Kategna restaurant was one of the best restaurants I ate at while I was in Addis Ababa. The menu is extremely extensive, and the food is amazing! More info:
One of the highlights of visiting Ethiopia, is eating Ethiopian food, and when you're in Addis Ababa there are many amazing restaurants to choose from. Kategna Restaurant is a well known favorite for locals that live in Addis Ababa, straight up because it's a nice environment, and most importantly, the food is outstanding. During the course of my stay in Addis Ababa, I went to Kategna restaurant a number of times, unable to resist the delicious flavors and nice atmosphere of the restaurant.
I began with a giant platter of Yetsom Beyaynetu, a mix of vegetarianan fasting dishes. The mix came out, beautifully arranged on a giant platter, filled with the wonderful assortment of different curries and stews. There was misir wat, a red lentil stew, some different kinds of salads, and gomen, which is collard greens. Though it might not be a traditional method of ordering, I decided to go for another dish known as doro wat, a famous Ethiopian food that's a chicken stew made from onions, berbere spices, and lots of butter. Also, the egg in the doro wat is one of the highlights. The doro wat was scooped directly onto the pile of injera, mingling with the other wonderful ingredients.
As you can already imagine, I was so incredibly excited to begin my feast at Kategna restaurant, my mouth juices were flowing. There were two different colors of injera that I got served, something I didn't really notice from other restaurants I ate at while I was in Addis Ababa. But after tasting both, they really almost tasted identical. I quickly grabbed pieces of injera, ripping it off the roll and digging it into the juicy curries. The flavor combination were out of control delicious. The vegetarian mix of yetsom beaynetu was excellent. Then it was time to devour the doro wat. The piece of chicken was oddly small, just a time bone with a little bit of meat, but the sauce and egg together were so delicious, that I honestly almost forgot about the chicken itself. The sauce was dripping with flavor!
Despite Kategna restaurant being on the nicer side of the restaurant spectrum, the prices are incredibly reasonable. For me entire feast in the video, including the coffee at the end, our total bill came to 230 ETB ($11.85), and believe it or not, I was actually stuffed full for almost the entire day afterwards, I hardly have to eat any dinner! There are two main locations of the restaurant in Addis Ababa, one just off Gabon street (the one featured in this video) and the other is just off Bole road very near to the airport. I went to both locations during my time in Addis, and they were both of equal greatness, and even the atmosphere was just about the same.
When you visit Addis Ababa, one of the best restaurants is Kategna restaurant, and you should not miss out on the opportunity to eat there!

This is an amazing (in many ways) look at what is thought 1930s Ethiopia. It appears to be filmed by Burton Holmes a great travel film maker, in fact he has his name on the Hollywood streets. It is Burton who coined the phrase travelogue A pioneer in world travel that is for sure. This 10 min film shows daily life in Addis Ababa, talks a far amount about the army, shows street life, a fair amount about Haile Selassie, King of Kings, Lion of Judah, Tafari, Rastafari. Although its importances to us is the short footage about making bread, Injera, talking about raw meat and making clay pots. Although not a food related film, apart from the mentioned, it is still a wonderful look at Ethiopian

Ethiopia's Addis Ababa enforces motorcycle ban despite 'opposition'
The Addis Ababa city administration on Tuesday (July 9) commenced the enforcement of a ban on use of motorcycles in the Ethiopian capital.
The administration had weeks back announced the ban justifying it as a move targeted at eradicating incessant robberies in the capital.
According to Takele Uma Banti, the mayor of Addis Ababa, who announced the measure last month, most crimes are committed with motorcycles. Some Twitter users disagreed with the assertion and slammed the move.
However, exc…

Drinking Ethiopian Coffee in Addis Ababa
One of the best things to do in Addis Ababa is drink Ethiopian coffee. Looking for other top things to do:
As you probably already know, Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee - coffee is originally from Ethiopia, and it's still known to grow some of the best quality beans in the entire world. When you're in Ethiopia, coffee is never hard to find. It's an important part of the Ethiopian culture. In Addis Ababa there are a number of different kinds of Ethiopian coffee to drink. All over the place there are cafe's where you'll find European and especially Italian style coffees like espressos and macchiatos. At Ethiopian restaurants you'll find the traditional style of coffee known as buna. And along the sides of the streets and all over the city and neighborhoods you'll find tiny shoebox coffee shops that serve local coffee.
Walking down the street in Addis Ababa you'll frequently get a blast of fresh coffee roasting in your face. You'll know right away that you can step off the side of the road and dip into the small coffee shop for one or ever three cups of coffee. This video was taken at a small coffee shop just next to a hotel that I was staying in. The girl welcomed us in to the scent of delicious coffee being roasted. Her little coffee shop was both a coffee shop and a store selling khat, a leaf that you chew.
When we arrived she was roasting up a batch of coffee beans until dark and fragrant. I chose a seat on a side turned soda crate and watched her make the coffee. When the beans were roasted she transferred them to a mortar and pestle. Using a few swift pounds she impressively had the coffee beans pounded and turned into a fine powder in just a few minutes. From there, the ground coffee was spooned into the jebena, a clay vessel used to make traditional Ethiopian coffee. She then added water to the top of the beans and set the jebena on the hot charcoal to let it boil. Once the coffee had finished brewing, she then covered the coffee pot with a strainer and poured dark brewed Ethiopian coffee into each individual cups. Lots of locals like a ton of sugar in their coffee, but I enjoyed just a half a spoon so it wasn't too sweet. It was marvelous coffee, thick, full bodied, and rich with flavor. When it was really sweet it almost had a chocolatey flavor. Though there wasn't any popcorn at this particular spot, drinking coffee with a small bowl of popcorn on the side is common, especially the a coffee ceremony or at a restaurant.
One of the greatest things about Ethiopia is Ethiopian coffee and I didn't have a bad cup the entire time I was there. If you love coffee, Ethiopia is a country you need to visit as soon as you have a chance.

Istanbul A Turkish Restaurant in Addis Ababa Ethiopia
Istanbul is a wonderful Turkish restaurant about 100meter/300 feet to the West of about 8 hotels on Cameroon Street. It has a wonderful enclosed space and a courtyard about 30 meters by 30 meters.
The food is wonderful and the hosts are really very welcoming. It is a good chance to try quite a variety of Turkish foods. The owners actually came from Kayseri, Turkey. This is a city not far from Ankara, the capital city of Turkey. Just to show a person how well they are doing....they own 2 other Turkish restaurants in Addis Ababa.
Some of the girls who help to serve food have even learned Turkish.
Right across the street from the restaurant is the Ukrainian Embassy and Residence of the Ambassador. Even nearby are beautiful and large homes owned by businessmen and politicians from Ethiopia. This area is known as the Bole District.
Apart from the beautiful surrondings....and the closeness to a number of the nice hotels....it is worth try the delicious food. A great change of pace for the traveller.
