8 Things to See in Alice Springs, Australia
Alice Springs is a small city located near the geographic center of Australia. Long home to the Arrernte Aboriginal people, European settlement began in the 1870s when a telegraph repeater station was established near a water hole found in the normally dry Todd River. Mining drew some people in the 1880s, but it wasn't until the arrival of train service in 1929 that significant white settlement occurred here.
In subsequent years, Alice Springs would become an important service center for the central Australian Outback. It has also become a major tourist center for those visiting Ayers Rock/Uluru and other destinations in Australia's Red Centre.

Bob & Wendy who are the owners of Richmond heavy Towing have let me use the photos that were hanging around the office that people took of the jobs that Richmond have done over the years and also there are my own photos I took working there for many years. After many years of driving all types of Richmond Towing’s trucks and I was getting older and slower so I bought one of Richmond’s little tow truck and run as a owner/driver, I did most of the night tows to give the other drivers a break. Most towing company’s all the drivers work day and do callouts at night 24/7 when I retired my tow that I had spent way to much money on making it my pride and joy, I knew I would never get the money it was worth so I donated to the National Road Transport Hall of Fame in Alice Springs.
ALICE SPRINGS NORTHERN TERRITORY NT AUSTRALIA AA PART I OF 2 PARTS
Alice Springs is a town in the Northern Territory of Australia. Its population of 28,178 (2001 Census) makes it the second-largest settlement in the Territory (the only other towns of significant size are Darwin, the capital, and Katherine). Originally named Stuart, the town was established almost as a frontier settlement for north-south travel by camel trains through the desert of the outback. A telegraph station was placed near a permanent waterhole called Alice Springs (see photograph) after the wife of Sir Charles Todd, Postmaster General of South Australia, after whom the Todd River (which is usually dry) was named. The Ghan railway from Adelaide reached Stuart in 1929, and the town moved away from the waterhole, but locals kept the name. In 1933, after much debate, the town of Stuart was officially renamed Alice Springs. The north-south road between Darwin, Alice Springs and Adelaide is still called the Stuart Highway. WIKIPEDIA
St Francis House (1946 - 1959) - Adelaide - South Australia
St Francis House was established in 1946 at Semaphore by the Australian Board of Missions. It replaced the Church of England Hostel for Inland Children as a Home for Aboriginal boys from the Northern Territory. In 1949 Aboriginal boys evacuated to New South Wales during World War II were sent to the Home. In 1959 St Francis House closed. Some older boys were sent to Karingal Youth Hostel and most younger boys were placed in foster care.
St Francis House unofficially began in 1946 when ten Aboriginal boys aged between the ages of 8 and 15 living at the Church of England Hostel for Inland Children in Kensington Park were moved to Glanville Hall at Semaphore. This historic building had been purchased by the Australian Board of Missions (ABM) to be developed as a training centre for Aboriginal boys from the Northern Territory.

The history of the Purple House
This week, the Australian Museum welcomes a new temporary installation about The Purple House - an innovative Indigenous-owned and run health service operating from its base in Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.
Now operating 16 remote clinics and a mobile dialysis unit called the Purple Truck, Purple House is getting patients back home so that families and culture can remain strong.
Visit the installation in the First Australians Galleries at the Australian Museum - free with general admission.
Port Adelaide, South Australia
The city of Port Adelaide dates back to the 1830s. Once a bustling industrial port city on the north west of Adelaide (Capital of the state of South Australia) is going through a rejuvenation with the new blending in with the new with the arts playing a central role in characterising the new city.
In this short film I share the sights I enjoyed during my discovery of this historic precinct.
Alice Springs Telegraph Station
The Alice Springs Telegraph Station marks the original site of the European settlement in Alice Springs. It was established in 1871 to relay messages between Darwin and Adelaide along Australia's Overlan Telegraph Line. It is situated 4km north of the Town Centre of Alice Springs and is considered the birthplace of the township. The station boasts of a rich history, a trail station cafe, museum and park activities.

Six day Desert Safari in Northern Territory. Darwin to Alice Springs Australia. Part one
Aborigene em Adelaide
Aborigene em Adelaide
Australia: Track One
(A few slight errors have been made in the reading.)
The Aboriginal communities that dot the Northern Territory have lived for 1000's of years in the roasting, arid Centre (as the southern part of the NT is called) or the hot and humid Top End (northern NT).
Europeans have not proved so adaptable. The Territory has fewer than 200,000 inhabitants scattered across half a million square miles, an area more than five times the size of Great Britain. Darwin, the capital, has a population of 100,000 and feels more like a large country town. Alice Springs has 27,000 inhabitants, while the other towns - Katherine, Pine Creek and Tennant Creek - consist of little more than a main street. The remaining Territorians live on sprawling cattle properties or in the Aboriginal settlements. You can travel for hundreds of miles without seeing a trace of civilisation.
The Northern Territory likes to see itself as a land apart from the rest of Australia; indeed, local time is 90 minutes behind that in Sydney (and currently nine-and-a-half hours ahead of the UK.
It's best not to visit the Top End during the build-up to the wet season (September to November), when the extreme heat and humidity are unbearable. The best time to venture up north is during the dry season (May to August), with its warm days and balmy evenings. By contrast, the Centre - the southern portion - can be chilly at night during winter; summer is scorchingly hot. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit.
PLANE, TRAIN OR AUTOMOBILE?
Any: as of February, the capital of the NT is connected with the rest of Australia by rail. The northbound Ghan train leaves Adelaide in South Australia every Sunday.
After calling in at Alice Springs, it travels up through the Red Centre and on to Darwin on a newly built rail link. The return trip leaves the Territory's capital every
Wednesday.
The 1,847-mile journey from the Southern Ocean to the tropical Top End takes 47 hours. It has instantly become one of the world's great train trips. The train stops in Alice for four hours, giving passengers time to visit the Alice Springs Desert Wildlife Park; in Katherine, the stop is long enough to take a boat cruise at Katherine Gorge.
Darwin is the ideal gateway to the Northern Territory. The easiest access is from Singapore or from Bali.
The city is isolated from the rest of Australia. It is closer to the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, than to Canberra. The transcontinental Stuart Highway, which cuts south to the Southern Ocean, begins at a mini-roundabout by the Esplanade.
Darwin is 30 years old this year: the old city was destroyed on Christmas Eve 1974 by Cyclone Tracy. But it is worth lingering for a couple of days. The city has good facilities and decent beaches, combined with a slightly edgy, frontier-town atmosphere.
The sunsets are legendary, and there are several reasonable restaurants; the Waterhole on Knuckey Street is one of the best, while crocodile and emu burgers are a speciality at the ubiquitous cheap cafés. The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory on Conacher Street in Fannie Bay has a fine collection of Aboriginal art.
