King William Street Adelaide Tram Bus People Bike Congestion June 2015 Video
Grenfell Street and King William Street is a level crossing for most of the bus and trams in Adelaide.
Metropolitan Adelaide Transport Study, or MATS Plan as it became known, was a comprehensive transport plan released in 1968 examining the then-current and future needs of transport for the city of Adelaide.
It recommended the construction of ... a subway under King William Street.
Ultimately none of the plan's recommendations were brought to fruition in their original form, due to political and public opposition, in contrast to the 1969 Melbourne Transportation Plan.
After 1973, the state government decided on a light rail proposal to extend the historic Glenelg Tram. The new route was to continue along King William Street beyond what was then the terminus in Victoria Square and weave through the Adelaide Park Lands to the Modbury corridor. The light rail system would connect with feeder buses at stations along the length of the corridor to transfer passengers to suburban routes. New light rail vehicles were to be bought to replace the ageing 1929 H class trams.
Public opposition to the project was broad. The Adelaide City Council objected to the plan on the basis that it would interfere with the well-designed layout of the city proper. In response, the government altered the plan to redirect the line underneath the city, at a considerable increase in cost.
David Tonkins Liberal Party won in a landslide at the 1979 election against the Des Corcoran Labor government.
Test drilling commenced for the tunnel, but the entire light rail project was halted in 1980 after Premier David Tonkin appointed Michael Wilson, an opponent of the plan, as Transport Minister.

Latrobe Valley Bus Lines Volvo B5RLE Hybrid public debut
On the 31st August 2016 Latrobe Valley Bus Lines held a public debut for their new Volvo B5RLE hybrid bus in Traralgon. The event was attended by transport & bus industry officials as well as members of the general public. Free rides were on offer for the general public around town as well as pedal powered smoothies. The bus uses parallel hybrid technology where an electric motor & batteries power the bus for the first 23km/h with the 5 liter diesel engine powering the bus for higher speeds. The bus also features regenerative braking to recharge the batteries.
The bus recently spent some time with various operators in New Zealand and will now be at Latrobe Valley Bus Lines for the next three months on a trial basis. The bus body is a Queensland-built Bustech VST fitted out to State Transit Authority specifications. You can tell as the bus has STA seating and has NSW stickers inside.
We start the video with a couple of photos of the bus and then hear some speeches from several officials. At 4:40 we begin the ride on the bus around town. It's first takeoff is on electric power and it's very quiet & smooth. The rest of the journey is powered by the diesel engine which is also rather quiet.

SUMMARY
=======
Adelaide ( (listen) AD-ə-layd) is the capital city of the state of South Australia, and the fifth-most populous city of Australia. Adelaide is home to 77 percent of the South Australian population, making it the most centralised population of any state in Australia.
Adelaide is north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, on the Adelaide Plains between the Gulf St Vincent in the west and the low-lying Mount Lofty Ranges in the east. Adelaide stretches 20 km (12 mi) from the coast to the foothills, and 94 to 104 km (58 to 65 mi) from Gawler at its northern extent to Sellicks Beach in the south.
Named in honour of Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, queen consort to King William IV, the city was founded in 1836 as the planned capital for a freely-settled British province in Australia. Colonel William Light, one of Adelaide's founding fathers, designed the city centre and chose its location close to the River Torrens, in the area originally inhabited by the Kaurna people and known as Tarntanya or Tarndanyangga (place of the red kangaroo). Light's design set out the city centre in a grid layout, interspaced by wide boulevards and large public squares, and entirely surrounded by parklands.
Early colonial Adelaide was shaped by prosperity and wealth, and was one of the few Australian cities without a convict history. Until the post-war era, it was Australia's third-largest city. It has been noted for early examples of religious freedom, a commitment to political progressivism and civil liberties. It has been known as the City of Churches since the mid-19th century, referring to its diversity of faiths. As South Australia's government and commercial centre, Adelaide is the site of many governmental and financial institutions. Most of these are concentrated in the city centre along the cultural boulevard of North Terrace, King William Street and in various districts of the metropolitan area.
Adelaide is noted for its many festivals and sporting events, its food and wine, its long beachfronts, and its large defence and manufacturing sectors. Its quality of life has ranked highly in various measures through the 2010s. The demonym Adelaidean is used in reference to the city and its residents.
