Nassau is the capital and commercial centre of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. The city has an estimated population of 274,400 as of 2016, just over 70% of the population of the country (~391,000). Lynden Pindling International Airport, the major airport for the Bahamas, is located about 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) west of Nassau city centre, and has daily flights to major cities in Canada, the Caribbean, the United Kingdom and the United States. The city is located on the island of New Providence, which functions much like a business district. Nassau is the site of the House of Assembly and various judicial departments and was considered historically to be a stronghold of pirates. The city was named in honour of William III of England, Prince of Orange-Nassau, deriving its name from Nassau, Germany. Nassau's modern growth began in the late eighteenth century, with the influx of thousands of American Loyalists and their slaves to the Bahamas following the American War of Independence. Many of them settled in Nassau (then and still the commerce capital of the Bahamas) and eventually came to outnumber the original inhabitants. As the population of Nassau grew, so did its populated areas. Today the city dominates the entire island and its satellite, Paradise Island. However, until the post-Second World War era, the outer suburbs scarcely existed. Most of New Providence was uncultivated bush until Loyalists were resettled there following the American Revolutionary War; they established several plantations, such as Clifton and Tusculum. Slaves were imported as labour.
After the British abolished the international slave trade in 1807, they resettled thousands of Africans liberated from slave ships by the Royal Navy on New Providence (at Adelaide Village and Gambier Village), along with other islands such as Grand Bahama, Exuma, Abaco and Inagua. In addition, slaves freed from American ships, such as the Creole case in 1841, were allowed to settle there. The largest concentration of Africans historically lived in the Over-the-Hill suburbs of Grants Town and Bain Town to the south of the city of Nassau, while most of the inhabitants of European descent lived on the island's northern coastal ridges.

Nassau/ˈnæsɔː/ is the capital, biggest city, and business focal point of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. The city has a populace of 248,948 (2010 registration), 70 percent of the whole populace of the Bahamas (353,658). Lynden Pindling International Airport, the real air terminal for the Bahamas, is placed around 16 kilometers (9.9 mi) west of Nassau downtown area, and has every day flights to significant urban communities in the United States, the Caribbean, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The city is found on the island of New Providence, which works much like a business locale. Nassau is the site of the House of Assembly and different legal offices and was viewed as verifiably to be a fortification of pirates. The city is at last named for the German town Nassau.
Nassau's advanced development started in the late eighteenth century, with the deluge of a great many American Loyalists and their slaves to the Bahamas taking after the American Revolutionary War. A number of them settled in Nassau (then and still the trade capital of the Bahamas) and in the end came to dwarf the first occupants.
As the number of inhabitants in Nassau developed, so did its populated zones. Today the city commands the whole island and its satellite, Paradise Island. In any case, until the post-Second World War time, the external rural areas hardly existed. A large portion of New Providence was uncultivated bramble until Loyalists were resettled there taking after the American Revolutionary War; they secured a few ranches, for example, Clifton and Tusculum. Slaves were foreign as work.
After the British abrogated the global slave exchange 1807, they resettled a huge number of Africans freed from slave transports by the Royal Navy on New Providence (at Adelaide Village and Gambier Village), alongside different islands, for example, Grand Bahama, Exuma, Abaco and Inagua. What's more, slaves liberated from American boats, for example, the Creole case in 1841, were permitted to settle here. The biggest centralization of Africans verifiably lived in the Over-the-Hill rural areas of Grants Town and Bain Town to the south of the city of Nassau, while a large portion of the occupants of European plunge lived on the island's northern seaside.
Cable Beach
Famous for its golden sand beaches, Cable Beach serves as the perfect destination to spend a day relaxing in the sun. Known as the hotel district of Nassau, the area is home to five massive hotels. No need to worry if you are not staying in one of the hotels, however. Many of them offer use of their pools for the day (for a fee). You can also stroll up to one of the area's public beaches and swim in the warm, shimmering Bahamian waters.
Whether you spend the day tanning, splashing in the hotel pools, or running up and down Cable Beach, you are almost certain to have worked up an appetite. Good thing Cable Beach is also known for its numerous dining options. The majority of restaurants are located either in the hotels or across the street. After you finish dinner, be sure to check out the Crystal Palace Casino for some night time fun.
