Sringeri Sharadamba Temple & Vidyashankara Temple - Visit Adi Shankaracharya heritage in Karnataka
Sringeri, as we see it today, owes its history, heritage, and lineage to Adi Shankaracharya. The town today revolves around the Shardamba Temple and Sringeri Sharada Peetham set up by him in 8th CE, with Tunga River flowing between them.
Archaeologically, Vidyashankara is the most beautiful temple in Sringeri. A unique all stone temple built centuries ago. The inside of the temple has 12 pillars representing 12 zodiac signs. Exteriors have several beautifully carved stone sculptures of Hindu Gods & Goddesses.
Sharada Peetham Elephants, Tunga River, Feeding the fish in the river, the living heritage, are all the attractions of Sringeri.
Sringeri gets its name from Rishi Shringya, son of Rishi Vibhandaka. In fact, the full name is RishiShringra Giri, Giri meaning mountain. The etymology and the name tracing back to the days of the Rishis tells us that Sringeri has been inhabited since a very long time.
Sringeri, as we see it today, owes its history, heritage, and lineage to Adi Shankaracharya. The town today revolves around the Shardamba Temple and Sringeri Sharada Peetham set up by him in 8th CE, with Tunga River flowing between them.
Sharada Devi is the principal presiding deity of Sringeri. It is believed that Adi Shankara brought Sharada Devi here from Kashmir, where he spent some time. The original Sharada Peeth of Kashmir is now in Pak occupied territory.
Inside the temple, Sharada Devi is seated on a Chakra or a wheel and holds a mala in her hand. The original idol of Sharada Devi was made in Sandalwood. Why Not! Sandalwood is found in abundance in the region. The current image in gold was installed in 14th CE by the Saint Vidyaranya. Vidyaranya was the 12th Shankaracharya of Sringeri Mutt who also played a role in establishing the Vijayanagara empire. The idol is adorned with so many clothes, jewels, and flowers that it is not easy to make out the finer details.
Archaeologically, Vidyashankara is the most beautiful temple in Sringeri. The moment we entered the Sharadamba Temple complex, it is Vidyashankara temple that caught our eye. The sculpted stone structure standing on a high platform in a unique semi-circular form is stunning, to say the least. We naturally gravitated towards this temple and stood in front of it admiring its unique shape.
We entered the temple and the first thing I did was counting the pillars inside the Mandapa. Yes, they were 12 in number though they were not all equal. The four pillars in the corners were larger than the rest. I had read about these 12 pillars representing 12 zodiac signs. As the sun moves from the zodiac to Zodiac, the first rays of the Sun fall on the pillar of the same zodiac. I could spot zodiac signs on some of the pillars but could not locate them on all the four pillars in the corners. The kind priest helped us find all of them despite huge crowds that he had to handle. You meet the Aries and Taurus Pillars as you enter the temple. Scorpio and Libra are closest to the deity.

BACKGROUND
Sanatana Dharma or Hinduism is vibrant today largely due to the efforts of Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya, the great philosopher saint, who lived over 1200 years ago. In his brief life of 32 years, he restored the pristine glory of the Advaita Vedanta philosophy of the Upanishads and re-established the path through which everyone can experience and become one with divinity.
Seldom in history has one individual had so much influence on a nation, its civilization and its religion.
While his achievements are eternal and unforgettable, his birthplace was forgotten by society for many centuries. In this film, we describe how his birthplace Kalady was rediscovered by the 33rd Jagadguru of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham. We will take you on a visual journey of Kalady from the time of Sri Shankara's parents, his birth and the miraculous events of his childhood. The film also chronicles the contemporary history of Kalady, including the various landmarks and temples associated with his life. There are fascinating interviews with ordinary people, former rulers and spiritual leaders who are all influenced by this great philosopher. Through beautiful and heart-stopping images of nature, people and temples, this film provides an unforgettable experience of what Sri Shankara's life may have been like, and how he touched the lives of the Kalady's residents over the centuries.
Speaking in lucid Sanskrit, Jagadguru Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji enlightens us about the life of Sri Shankaracharya and the 33rd Jagadguru of Sringeri who rediscovered Kalady. The 33rd Jagadguru instituted the now internationally observed Shankara Jayanti celebrations and was the inspiration behind the first ever publication of the complete works of Sri Shankaracharya.
This documentary film is dedicated to the 33rd Jagadguru of Sringeri. It is solely due to his untiring efforts that the glory of Kalady and its special place in the legacy of Sri Shankaracharya has been preserved for the world.

Sringeri Mutt Temple View - Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya Mahasamsthanam and Sri Sharada Peetham
Sringeri, a holy, scenic, hilly place in Karnataka is where peace is palpable, tangible. Enchanted by the sacred spot, of matchless serenity, Sri Adi Shankaracharya founded here the first and foremost of his mathas, the Sringeri Math, also known as the Sringeri Sharada Peetham. Sringeri is where time has stood still; the Sringery of legend, the Sringery of mythology, the Sringeri of history, ancient and modern, the Sringeri where the successive Shankaracharyas have performed penance and attained samadhi, the Sringeri where there has always been a living Acharya, in the authentic tradition of Adi Shankara to bless and guide mankind.
This Video taken on 10-Nov-2018 during my visit to Sringeri with Family.

THE JAGADGURU SHANKARACHARYA OF SRINGERI: Life & Teachings of an Inspiring Saint
In a world that changes all the time, one thing remains the same — our pursuit of happiness and desire to avoid suffering. The sages of Sanatana Dharma (or Hinduism as it is called today) have always taught us that the philosophy of the Upanishads and other texts like the Bhagavad Gita are our path to lasting happiness.
Foremost among our sages is Sri Adi Shankaracharya, who lived 1200 years ago and is credited with reviving Sanatana Dharma. He established four centers of learning in the four corners of India, of which the Sri Sharada Peetham at Sringeri is the first and most important. This Peetham is blessed with an unbroken lineage of eminent Jagadgurus that stretches directly back to Sri Adi Shankaracharya Himself.
Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji is the current and 36th Acharya of this ancient lineage and exemplifies the God-realization of the Upanishadic sages. He is both a direct link to Sanatana Dharma's glorious past and the torch bearer to ensure that the Upanishadic teachings are vibrant even today. This film will take you on a journey into the life and teachings of this great sage. Where was He born and what was His childhood like? How did His divinity express itself? How did He meet His Guru? What made His Guru anoint Him as his successor? Why is His life relevant to us and what can we learn from it?
Through interviews with ordinary devotees, scholars and sannyasis, we discover how the Mahaswamiji practices the essential virtues of humility, compassion, unconditional giving and kindness. While scholars extol His great knowledge, spiritual seekers of all kinds (young and old alike) are carefully guided by Him on the path of Sanatana Dharma. By His personal example and His teachings, the Mahaswamiji demonstrates how the core tenets of Sanatana Dharma can help us lead a balanced, meaningful and happy life even in today's busy world.
An added feature of this film is the simple and penetrating Sanskrit discourse by the Mahaswamiji in which He teaches us about the path prescribed by Sanatana Dharma to avoid suffering and embark on the path to lasting happiness.
This film released on April 9, 2011 to honour the Shashtiabdapoorthi (61st Vardhanti Celebrations) of the Mahaswamiji, is being made available on the Internet on the occasion of Vyasa Puja (July 3, 2012).

Chikkamagaluru district in the Indianstate of Karnataka, is the site of the first maṭha established by AdiShankara, Hindu theologian and exponent of the AdvaitaVedantaphilosophy, in the 8th century CE It is located on the banks of the river Tungā.
According to legend, AdiShankaracharya is said to have selected the site as the place to stay and teach his disciples, because when he was walking by the Tungariver, he saw a cobra with a raised hood, providing shelter from the hot sun, to a frog about to spawn. Impressed with the place where natural enemies had gone beyond their instincts, he stayed here for twelve years. AdiShankaracharya also established mathas in the northern (at Jyotirmath, near Badrinath), eastern (at Puri) and western (at Dwaraka) quarters of India.
Sringeri Sharada Peetha
Sri Sharadamba Temple (ಶೃಂಗೇರಿ ಶಾರದಾಂಬೆ) is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to goddess Saraswati in the holy town of Shringeri in Chickkamagaluru District, Karnataka, India.
The Sharadamba Temple at Shringeri (Shringa giri in Sanskrit) is an 8th-century temple, founded by Sri Adi Shankaracharya. It housed a sandalwood statue of Shardamba in a standing posture, which was installed by Adi Shankarachaya until the Vijayanagara rulers and Sri Vidyaranya (12th Jagadguru) installed a seated gold statue of Sri Shardamba in the 14th century.
Tradition has it that after the Acharya had dispersed all the non-Vedic creeds prevailing in the country, He was on the look-out for a convenient and holy place where he could establish an institution to spread the truths of Advaita Vedanta. When the Acharya came to Sringeri, he saw an unusual sight on the banks of the Tunga. A cobra was seen spreading out its hood over a frog in labour pains, to give it shadow from the scorching mid-day sun. Struck with the sanctity of the place, which could infuse love between natural adversaries, the Acharya chose this very location to establish His first Math.

The Sringeri #Sharada Peetham is located on the banks of River Tunga in the Chikkamagalur district of Karnataka. The Sringeri Temple was the first of the four Ammaya Peetham established by Sri Adi Shankaracharya in 8th century AD. The word Ammaya Peetham means “Throne of the Veda”. Sri Adi Shankaracharya established four Peethams or Centers in the four corners of the country to safeguard and propagate the Vedas. The head of the Mutt is called Jagadguru meaning “Teacher of the world”. Although, the sringeri temple was established in the 8th century, the documented history is present only for the period after the 14th century.

Sri Sharadamba is the presiding deity of the town of Sringeri. The original sringeri temple was small with a sandalwood idol of Goddess Sharada installed above a Sri Chakra carved by Adi Shankaracharya. Subsequently, the sringeri temple was renovated and expanded by Sri Bharati Krishna Tirtha and Sri Vidyaranya. Sri Bharati Krishna Tirtha substituted the sandalwood idol with the present golden idol.
According to the history of the sringeri temple, the 32nd Acharya of the Peetham, Jagadguru Sri Vriddha Narasimha Bharati Mahaswamiji had a vision of the Ganapati when he was contemplating on resolving and issue in the mutt affairs. He offered prayers to the image of Lord Ganapati carved on the Torana of the door nearby. The problem was resolved immediately. Since then, the Ganapati has come to be worshiped as Torana Ganapati.
