Adinath Temple Khajuraho (Part 1)
As the name suggests, Adinath temple in Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh is dedicated to Adinath the Jain saint. This is the last of Jain temples built around here. The temple is magnificently decorated with different sculpted figures including those of yakshis.
The Adinath temple is situated adjacent to the Parshvanatha Temple, which is the largest of all the Jain temples in Khajuraho. This Adinath temple has been partly repaired over the centuries. This temple is quite similar to the Hindu temples in Khajuraho. Though a Jain temple, it looks more or less like a Hindu temple owing to its architecture and designing. A black image inside the temple gives the indication of it being a Jain temple. The temple has very fine carvings on its 3 bands of sculptures.
Adinath temple is towards the north of the largest Jain temple, the Parshvanatha temple. It is a small temple; its 'shikhar' is simple with a graceful and elegant auspicious pitcher on the top of it. The temple's sanctum is simple as well and it seems that the altar had been built at some time later than the construction of the temple. The roof is constructed beautifully with lotus like stone, which adds to the beauty of the sanctum sanctorum.
Jain Group of Temples...Khajuraho Series (1)
Khajuraho has been recognized by UNESCO as a place of world heritage on account of its magnificent temples. The temples of Khajuraho are generally divided into three groups: Western, Eastern and Southern. The Eastern group mainly consisting of Jain temples. There are total 34 Jain Temples. But from architectural point of view the Parshwanath, the Adinath and the Shantinath temples are relatively more important and noteworthy. Shri 1008 Lord Shantinath temple is the main temple with 14 ft. high colossus in the standing posture, the highest idol of all idols (deity images) of Khajuraho. According to an inscription on it, it is installed in Vikrama-Samvat 1085 (1028 AD). This temple is an assemblage of the fragmnets, pillars and images from older temples and is built around a courtyard. This temple also contains a picture-gallery, which exhibits photos of prominent Jain monuments of India. The Parshwanath temple is famous in the world as it contains some of the most excellent sculptures of Khajuraho e.g. figures of Lakshmi-Narain, Balram-Reoti, eight Dikpalas (i.e. Indra, Agni, Yama, Nirriti, Varuna, Vayu, Kuber and Isan), Ambika, Kamdev Rati, Ram-Sita along with Hanuman. This temple is also privileged to possess the best art pieces of Sura- Sundaris (Divine Nymphs) in various attractive postures. The temple is rectangular in shape with few star - like projections that add so much variety to the other temples of this period. The Parshwanath Temple has a porch on the east side that leads into the mandap and sanctum. There is also a projection on the west side, apparently added later, containing a small shrine. Third is the Adinath temple located on the right of the Parshwanath, is a beautiful - though small shrine. It is noted for its simple but well- ornamented 'Shikhar' (spire) and the three bands of sculptures on its semi-circular outer wall containing figures of Gandharvas and Kinnars and Vidyadharas, various Yakshas and Apsaras. The figures of Govadan (Gomukh) - the attendant Yaksha of Lord Risabhadev have been conspicuously carved-out. This temple has got the rare sculptures of sixteen Digambar Jain Vidyadevis with their 'Vahanas' (vehicles) and 'Ayudhas' (weapons) and the necessary 'Parikar' (background).
The Parshvanatha jain temple (Khajuraho - India)
08/08/2018
Parshvanatha temple (IAST: Pārśvanātha Mandir) is a 10th-century Jain temple at Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh, India. It is now dedicated to Parshvanatha, although it was probably built as an Adinatha shrine during the Chandela period. Despite the temple's Jain affiliation, its exterior walls feature Vaishnavaite themes. The entrance has an inscription with a most-perfect magic square. It is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with other temples in the Khajuraho Group of Monuments.

Adinath Temple Khajuraho (Part 2)
Adinath Temple is a temple of great reverence dedicated to Adinath, the first Jain Tirthankar. This temple is situated towards the north of the Parshvanatha Temple, which is the largest Jain Temple in Khajuraho. The Adinath temple is the last Jains shrine, which was built in the devotion of Lord Adinath. The temple is excellently built and decorated with numerous sculptures including the figures of yakshis.
The temple has been repaired and restored over the years. Though a Jain Temple, it looks very similar to the various Hindu temples in Khajuraho. The sanctum sanctorum houses a black image of the deity and this clearly indicates it being a Jain temple. It is actually a small temple but displays brilliant architecture. There are many fine carvings on the three bands of sculptures in it.
The temple's shikar is quite simple and plain to look at. On the top of it there is an elegant pitcher. The roof built in lotus like stone makes the sanctum look lovelier. Also, it seems as it the altar has been built later. On the walls of the temple there are figures of the court musicians that have been carved beautifully.

Khajuraho, India: The Eastern Group of Jain Temples
Once again, I apologize for consistently mispronouncing Khajuraho - kept putting a Khoo in it. What can I say...duh.
The Eastern Temple group is small and only two Jain Temples make it worth visiting. Parshvanatha Temple, built between 950-970 AD with beautiful sculptures on its exterior and Adinatha Temple, names for the first Jain Tirthankara,Adinatha. Some of the other temples are active while still more are in deplorable shape. It won't take you long to visit this area and from here, it was on to Orchha, the once capital of the Bundela Kings, One of the most powerful kingdoms in Central India.

A Visit to India - Part 19: Khajuraho - The Jain Temples
Saturday 3rd August
We got up early and walked to the Eastern Jain temples. It was so peaceful at about 7 am, before the touts got started. Lots of monkeys, cows, dogs and horses around and people pumping water from the wells. We saw a couple of small working temples along the way. Most people just wished us Namaste and didn't bother us. The Jain temples were worth a look. They were more Hindu than Jain and similar to the ones we saw the day before, but some of the carvings were better preserved.

Khajuraho, India: The Western Group of Temples
It is definitely possible to get templed out at Khajuraho which is why guides take visitors to the best temples; Lakshman, Mahadeva, and Varaha, all completely different. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is considered one of the seven wonders of India, second only to the Taj Mahal and is primarily known for its erotic sculptures.
There are several theories why there are erotic sculptures. Briefly, Tantric sexual influence; Workmen who lived in an isolated atmosphere and carved their sexual urges; and to test the purity of worshippers as they walked around the temples.
Whatever, better writers than I have described them in detail. Go, gawk and wonder, How many people are in that position?

7 Wonders of India: Khajuraho
Khajuraho is a village in Madhya Pradesh, located in Chhatarpur District, about 620 kilometers southeast of Delhi. The Khajuraho temples adhere to a northern Indian shikhara temple style and often to a Panchayatana plan or layout. Kandariya Mahadeva comprises eighty-four shikharas, the main being 116 feet from the ground level. The Khajuraho temples were built over a span of a hundred years, from 950 A.D. to 1050 A.D. They were rediscovered during the late 19th century. Khajuraho has the largest group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples, famous for their everyday life sculpture.
Jain Temples Khajuraho - Devotee's Delight
Situated in the heart of the country's central region Madhya Pradesh, is the fascinating town of Khajuraho. The tranquil town has a rich cultural heritage reflected through the numerous temples and an 'olde worlde' rural atmosphere. The Jain temples in Khajuraho have great religious significance attracting devotes from all over the world. Khajuraho in India is one of the top tourist destinations, with the Jain temples contributing their fair share.
Khajuraho is located in the Bundelkhand district of Madhya Pradesh. Many years back, during the Chandella rule, many places in Bundelkhand including Khajuraho home to some of the very large and greatly flourishing communities of Jains. In Khajuraho, Jains people mostly inhabited the eastern parts of the town. They built a number of Jains temples there some of which are still present.
Though there are nearly 31 Jains Temples in Khajuraho, some of the chief ones are the Adinath Temple, the Parshvantaha Temple and the Shantinath Temple. Almost all the Jains Temples are presently encloses within a large compound wall which was constructed in the early twentieth century. Ghantai Temple is an exception.
