Designed by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, founder of the Isha Foundation, the structure was built by the foundation and weighs around 500 tonnes (490 long tons; 550 short tons).Sadhguru said that the statue is for inspiring and promoting yoga, and is named Adiyogi, which means the first yogi, because Shiva is known as the originator of yoga.

Adiyogi was inaugurated on 24 February 2017 by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri – a Hindu festival celebrated annually as marriage of Lord Shiva with Maa Parvati. The Indian Ministry of Tourism has included the statue as a consecration destination in its official Incredible India campaign. The Adiyogi Statue has been recognized as the Largest Bust Sculpture by Guinness World Records.
Controversy includes
Various environmental activists and groups protested the inauguration claiming that the statue was built in the catchment area of the Noyyal River, thus affecting biodiversity and violating building bylaws. A Public Interest Litigation was also filed by Vellingiri Hill Tribal Protection Society in the Madras High Court challenging the construction of the statue.

In Yoga, Lord Shiva is considered the #AdiYogi & the #AdiGuru. He is the foremost among the yogis and the first teacher of the science of #Yoga. He is an ideal renuncient & an ideal householder, all in one. No one knows his origin. He is depicted as sitting in lotus pose on #MountKailash in deep #Samadhi, unmoved by the events of the universe.
His body is smeared with sacred ash. In his hair is the crescent moon symbolizing mystical vision & knowledge. The serpent coiled around his neck symbolizes the mysterious #kundalini energy present in all of us. The river #Ganga cascades from the crown of his head symbolizing perpetual purification, which he bestows upon his devotees. He is the 3-eyed one or Trilochana as he has the #thirdeye or the eye of wisdom in the centre of the forehead.
He is described as the “blue-throated” or Neelakanta. He is said to have drank the poison that emerged during the churning of the ocean by the gods & the Asuras, thereby protecting the world from its harmful effects. His #Trishul represents the 3 gunas or qualities of Nature, namely tamas, rajas & sattva. He is Yogeshwara, the lord of Yoga; Maheshwara, the Great God & Bhuteshwara, the lord of the 5 elements from which the universe is created.
It is said that Shiva first imparted his knowledge to #Parvati/#Shakti. Also, for the good of mankind, he taught the science of Yoga to the ancient rishis who passed on this knowledge to the rest of humanity. All #yogic & tantric systems consider him as the 1st Guru. These teachings have come down to us in the form of Agama Sastras. From these teachings, came various traditions which still exist. One of them is the #NavNath Traditionfounded by Matsyendranath, Gorakshnath & the 7 other Gurus of the Nath Tradition, which is still prevalent mostly in North India. Some consider Gorakshnath as an incarnation of #LordShiva. In the South, it was the Agastya Muni, who disseminated this knowledge & created a lineage of Siddhas who specialized in Yoga, Tantra, Medicine, Astrology & other sciences.

ஈஷா யோகா மையம், தென்னிந்தியாவில் கோயம்புத்தூர் நகரிலிருந்து 40 கி.மீ. தொலைவில் உள்ள வெல்லங்கிரி மலைகளின் கைக்குழியில் உள்ளது. இந்த மையம் உள்மாற்றத்தை வளர்ப்பதற்கு அர்ப்பணித்து, தனிநபர்களிடையே நன்னெறி அமைப்பை உருவாக்கும்.

The Adiyogi Shiva Statue is 45 mts tall and 8 mts wide, being recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records as the ‘largest bust sculpture’ in the world. The entire statue is surrounded by distance hill ranges, well spread green trees, open meadows and an ashram for devotees. The serenity and beauty of that face is simply breath-taking and takes you to a different level of elevation.
