VLOG 4 // CRAZY COLOMBIA - The Salt Cathedral and that mental restaurant
Is life a circus? YES... if you visit the restaurant that can host 2000 people and that people fly into Colombia to visit... Bogota has 9 million people - but only 1 restaurant that's on everyone's lips... Andres Carne de Res!
And what's up with the underground Salt Cathedral and their 'saying' that if you get up tired - you're a sinner. Look we both had jet-lag, so we were sinners, even before going down in the underground cathedral...
Definitely go check out The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá followed by crazy dinner in Chia...

Megan McCormick takes an epic trip throughColombia and Panama: 2 countries that remain refreshingly untouched by mass tourism. Panama, in Central America is a country world famous for its canal, with mesmerising landscapes andvibrant cultural life. She then travels down to South America and Colombia where – despite its recent troubles – she discovers an amazingly beautiful country steeped in fascinating history.
Megan’s first stop is Panama’s lively capital –Panama City – where she hits the sights and heads for the main square in the old town, to thePlaza de la Independencia. Here she visits the site where Panama twice declared its independence – first from the Spanish and then from Greater Colombia in 1903. She stops off to sample some roasted plantain from a street vendor before indulging in a little retail therapy: shopping for the perfect Panama Hat.
During The Gold Rush of the 1850s, the U.S. built the railroad which now spans Panama from the Caribbean across to the Pacific Coast. Travelling vendors from Ecuador sold these hatsIan Wright commutes hometo the U.S. railroad workers toiling under the hot Caribbean sun. The hats were much admired when the workers returned home and – despite the fact they were really from Ecuador – they soon became known as “Panama Hats”, and so the name stuck.
Next Megan takes a trip to the famous Panama Canalwhich links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and is crucial for the Panamanian economy, generating approximately US$1 billion per annum. Next stop in her itinerary is the“Comarca” of Kuna Yala in the San Blas archipelago, a region belonging to one of Panama’s main indigenous groups, the Kuna. Here Gilberto Alemancia, a Kuna himself, invites Megan to his house for a traditional Kuna lunch before showing her the island. Our traveller is also lucky enough to be present the day the island celebrates the anniversary of the Kuna uprising against the Panamanian government which gave them semi-autonomous.
The next day it’s time for Megan to leave Panama behind and off to Colombia. Upon arrival inBogotá she checks into the Platypus, a hostel that has became quite an institution and is perfectly located right in the middle of the old town. Megan explores the city and then – feeling a bit peckish – decides to try out a very popular local snack: fried ants.
Ian Wright commutes homeAlthough Colombia’s troubles with rebel groups,drug-trafficking, and kidnaps have quietened down in recent years, Colombia is not the safest place in the world. You need protection! Fashionista Miguel Caballero – known as the “Armani of bullet proof clothes” – has the answer. Megan goes to check out his collection and ends up as a witness to a point blank shooting! Shaken but undeterred, she pops into the local Police Museum where you can see a creepy exhibition about famous drug dealer, Pablo Escobar.
Next stop in her quest is a trip to a small coca plantation a few hours outside Bogotá with freelance journalist Alejandro Nieto, where shelearns all about coca “paste” production.
Back in Bogotá, our traveller boards a flight to Colombia’s Caribbean coast and the beautiful historic city of Cartagena where she learns all about the city’s Spanish colonial past and chillsIan Wright commutes homeout to the sultry sounds to one of Colombia’s most popular musical rhythms: Vallenato.
The last stretch of Megan’s journey is long and arduous. She travels up the Caribbean coast to the town of Santa Marta where she treks into the jungle with archaeologist, Santiago Giraldo in search of the Lost City of The Tayrona. Perched high on the mountainous slopes of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the Lost City stands 1,300m above sea level. It was originally built by an ancient tribe – theTayrona Indians – and remains one of jewels of South America’s ancient cultural heritage.
America Latina | Colombia | Bogota
After the weekend spent outside of Bogota for the wedding, back to the city and its traffic and polluted air!
We signed up for a free guided tour of the city and we highly recommend (Strawberry Tours: Perfect way to know where to look at (instead of wandering aimlessly around the city), learn about history and check out the good spots.
We strolled around the historical center, walking through the narrow cobbled streets of La Candelaria, admired the graffitis and murals, and ended our tour Plaza de Bolivar.
We had lunch at La Puerta Falsa, a must-visit restaurant. They only have a few traditional dishes listed on the menu, including the delicious Tamal, but everything is delicious.
We then headed to the Mount Monserrate, the mountain that dominates Bogota. To go up, you can either 1) catch the teleférico, 2) walk up the stairs, 3) if you are very committed, you can go up the stairs on your knees. Obviously, we went for the 3rd option...
Altitude at the top of the Mount Monserrate = 3,152m. This altitude does affect people not used to it - people like us for instance. Which explains why we went into such a state of absolute delirium.

A Walk Through The Underground Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá in 4K

What is the Salt Cathedral?
We take you for a walk through the underground Salt Cathedral in Zipaquirá. This area of the country is rich in salt mines active since the 5th century B.C., and Colombia at the time was one of the most sought-after countries for the valuable natural resource of salt. This video is our first time shooting video in 4K, and it was a spectacular place to shoot.
The cathedral is pretty darn impressive. There are only two cathedrals of its kind in the world (the other is in Poland), and it's built 200m underground. Not only is it considered one of Colombia's paramount artistic and architectural accomplishments, but it was also honoured with the number 1 of the seven wonders of Colombia.
Essentially, it's an underground church built in a tunnel of a salt mine in the Halite Mountains. Originally constructed in 1954, significant structural problems lead to its closure and then it reopened after Bogotán architect Roswell Garavito Pearl and Bogotan engineer Jorge Enrique Castelblanco Reyes were awarded the job, and it reopened in 1995.
The walk down the tunnel is a series of interlinked rooms and chambers including 14 small chapels, and three large shrines and the impressive large cathedral that can hold up to 8400 people. Throughout the tunnel rests beautiful salt and marble sculptures all marvellously lit with blue and purple lighting.
What You Need to Know about the Salt Cathedral Tour:
A tour here lasts about an hour; it is a little cool down there, so bring sleeves and comfortable shoes. Normally, I am a little claustrophobic, yet I had no concern wandering through the surprisingly large tunnel, especially the impressively large cathedral at the end.
How to get to the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá:
Zipaquirá (the town where the cathedral resides) is approximately an hour outside of Bogotá (50kms), and you can easily get there by bus, private car or steam train tour. Tour operators like Destino Bogotá offer guided trips to Zipaquirá by steam train or private car from your hotel in Bogotá.
How to make your trip more meaningful
Spend some time in Zipaquirá, it's a charming colonial town, and to get more of the local flavour avoid the large western style restaurants that reside along the highway entering the town, and explore the town streets for restaurants and shops.
It is open Sunday-to-Sunday 9am-6pm. It is quite crowded on Sundays where locals and Bogotán's come to worship (although an interesting time to see the cathedral in all its glory), or you can wander through it a little more on another day by avoiding the large crowds.

The city of Cartagena (/ˌkɑːrtəˈdʒiːnə/ KAR-tə-JEE-nə, also US: /-ˈheɪnə/ -HAY-nə), known in the colonial era as Cartagena de Indias (Spanish: [kaɾtaˈxena ðe ˈindjas] (About this soundlisten)), is a major port founded in 1533, located on the northern coast of Colombia in the Caribbean Coast Region. It was strategically located between the Magdalena and Sinú rivers and became the main port for trade between Spain and its overseas empire, establishing its importance by the early 1540s. During the colonial era it was a key port for the export of Peruvian silver to Spain and for the import of enslaved Africans under the asiento system. It was defensible against pirate attacks in the Caribbean.[3] It is the capital of the Bolívar Department, and had a population 971,592 as of 2016.[1] It is the fifth-largest city in Colombia and the second largest in the region, after Barranquilla. The urban area of Cartagena is also the fifth-largest urban area in the country. Economic activities include the maritime and petrochemicals industries, as well as tourism.
The present city—named after Cartagena, Spain—was founded on June 1, 1533; but settlement by various indigenous people in the region around Cartagena Bay dates from 4000 BC. During the Spanish colonial period Cartagena served a key role in administration and expansion of the Spanish empire. It was a center of political braless lifestyle, ecclesiastical, and economic activity In 1984, Cartagena's colonial walled city and fortress were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Ride Day 41: Pasto, Colombia to Quito, Ecuador
Full Post & Border Crossing Information: One night in Pasto got me ready for my border crossing heading to Quito, Ecuador. I left for Quito before first light, and I would reach the border crossing by around 8 am, for hopefully a fast border crossing.
I only had 216 miles(348 kilometres) to travel, as I always do shorter trips for border crossing days, so I thought I would arrive in Quito by just after midday.
The trip started beautifully, minimal traffic, beautiful mountains, and valleys and I were making a good time on my bike getting to the border. I stopped off a few times for a little break to admire some views.
Colombia was always going to be sad for me, after spending over a month here, the people, beautiful, the food, especially the soups, amazing and the riding, spectacular.
However, it was not to be, leaving Colombia took only 10 minutes, but entering Ecuador was over 3 hours. This was a mix of it being around Christmas and the fact they had only two people manning the booths and over 500 people in line. I expected it to be busier, but I arrived at 9 am and the ass on the front door, nearly ended my trip.
Leaving Colombia
As you approach the border follow the signs and you will see two buildings on the left. Park between them (one is Aduana and one immigration)
First go to the bigger one, around the front and through a gate, a military official will check your passport before you enter up the stairs.
Next, go to immigration building (the first one where you parked your bike) it is a little door on the right and hand in your import paper, I took a copy (that wasn't needed).
Total Time was 10 minutes and $0
Entering Ecuador
As you approach there will be a small military checkpoint.Show passport. Continue on.
Then there will be one big building. Immigration is main part with a large entrance way. When I arrived there was a line of around 500 people, unbelievable, but as it was getting close to Christmas, bad timing, even though it was very early!
It took me two and a half hours to get to the front door of immigration building, waiting in line.
The guy manning the front door was checking passports and controlling the line. He was an arsehole, taking bribes and shaking hands with helpers with obvious money changing hands.
He then stopped me and told me because of my small tear in the passport which was done by a border official in El Salvador, my passport was invalid. I told him I have been waiting 2 hours and would take my chances and just walked passed him into the building.
Then I waited another 30 minutes, Noticing only two booths being manned. The lady who stamped me in did not even comment on my passport. I walked passed front door again, and accidently bumped into the man at door. Big smile and a sorry :)
Next, I went around to the front right side of the building (facing Ecuador) and got my import permit.
Now to get to Quito, Mexico!
Total Time was 3 Hours and $0
Quito, Ecuador
Quito, Ecuador's capital, sits high in the Andean foothills at an altitude of 2,850m. Constructed on the foundations of an ancient Incan city, it’s known for its well-preserved colonial centre, rich with 16th- and 17th-century churches and other structures blending European, Moorish and indigenous styles. These include the cathedral, in the Plaza Grande square, and ultra-ornate Compañia de Jesús Jesuit church. From Wikipedia
JW Marriott Hotel Quito, Ecuador
Top notch hotel, just a little far away from city center, Wi-Fi is quite slow for a place of this quality and be careful as they are one of the few remaining hotels that still want to charge extra (which I wasn't) for what they call enhanced hi- speed internet (which is still too slow at 10mps). Room (Junior Suite with Balcony) was great and roomy and great views
My Room (Junior Suite with Balcony) was great and roomy and great views, comfortable bedding and great service.
The manager was fantastic and continually tried to help my stay better.
Facilities are top notch but they Wi-Fi and location (considering how hard it is to get to historical places because of traffic) take the stars away.
Freedom Bike Rentals and Tours, Quito Ecuador
Freedom Bike Rental and Tours in Quito, Ecuador was a place a previous rider told me about. These guys had my bike for 2 days and fixed the leak in my front tire by sealing it correctly.
The guys at Ecuador Freedom Tours are fantastic and really know their stuff, everything you could want from a multi-day tour on really great bikes is there for you at very reasonable prices. They are only too happy to help out a fellow Adventure seeker.
