Sandboarding in Huacachina and Dune Buggy Ride
Having arrived in Lima on a Monday, our first weekend in Peru was spent escaping the city limits in search of adrenaline inspired adventures in Huacachina in the form of sandboarding and dune buggy riding. Having experienced this desert based activity five years ago I knew exactly what we were getting ourselves into; however, I downplayed the situation slightly to Audrey ;) What exactly is it like to be riding dune buggies in the desert? It's like a rollercoaster in the sand. Even the most seasoned extreme adventure sports lovers scream and nervously laugh like hyenas racing down dunes like it is nobody's business. It's a healthy dose of excitement with more than just a pinch of craziness. Sandboarding, on the other hand, doesn't exactly present an opportunity for your adrenaline levels to calm down.

Equally as stimulating to the nervous system, you race down sand dunes head first experiencing a steep incline. You're racing down the dunes at such high velocity, It's only mere seconds before you go from the top of the dune to the bottom. Although these activities in Huacachina (just outside of Ica) may induce a few grey hairs we wholeheartedly recommend it. After all, if you're not doing something that scares you every once in a while you aren't truly living!
PS. To rent a private dune buggy with a guide and access to three dunes for sand boarding it costs roughly 50 Soles per person based on a three person tour. This is roughly $50 in total.
Huacachina: Sandboarding and Dune Buggy in the Desert Travel Video Transcript:
Welcome to Huacachina. Today we're going to be having some fun in the desert and first up we're riding dune buggies.
Woo!
Woah! Screaming!
Enough of an adrenaline rush so far? Oh my goodness. We've only been doing this for a few minutes and I'm already feeling wobbly and shakey. I've just been screaming the whole time. You know what, I did this five years ago and we haven't even done the scariest stuff yet. So how do you feel about that? Nervous.
Si. Es Pacito.
Screaming. Hahaha.
Hahaha.
Screaming.
So this is challenge number two. Sandboarding. Are you up for it? I thought the first dune was pretty scary. This is even steeper.
How was it? Woo!
Woo Hoo!
Hahaha. Laughing and screaming.
I'm going. Oh, my gosh. Oh my gosh. Screaming.
How was it? I broke my shoe in the process.
Hahaha.
We suffered one casualty today. My shoe didn't make the third run.
Well they say, if you don't do something scary every day you're not really living. So, I think this qualifies. It was so much fun but completely terrifying at the same time. I think I screamed the whole way. Just me screaming. That is the soundtrack to this. What was more terrifying - the dune buggy or going down head first on the sandboard. Both. Both are equally terrifying. Like you have no control over either of them. But highly recommended if you come to Peru. Do it.
So for the three of us to do a private tour it was 50 Soles per person which works out to roughly $50 total.
And we've got an awesome driver. If they want to go with you how can they find you? Speaking in Spanish.
This is part of our Travel in Peru series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Peruvian culture, Peruvian arts, Peruvian foods, Peruvian religion, Peruvian cuisine and Peruvian people.

An Oasis in Peru? | Into the Desert, Ica and Huacachina
Who knew Peru had a desert? Even more so that its so close to Lima. Ica is one the main towns here and in this video we stay in our favourite hostel of the trip and venture into the desrt oasis town of Huacachina.
These places are small and great to to visit for a few days, or base yourself in Ica to explore further into the desert as its more than just the oasis.
Despite its small size, in Huacachina you can take part in some pretty extreme sports. We took a ride across sandunes in a buggy, tearing up the sand and wind blowing in our faces.
Adam also headed head first down a dune on a bodyboard, and we watched the sunset.
We are so new to vlog travel, having just provided highlights set to music before (see the SE Asia series). SO this adventure is filmed and edited on the road, in hostels, on the ground with THE most slow WIFI. Having to travel and edit is going to be challenging. We would love for you to follow us in the journey and hope the videos provide good information if you are planning to travel to the area or just interested. If it helps just one of you, then thats amazing!
Join as we learn how to navigate this continent and this world, with a backpack on and camera set to record. Our day to day experiences, the highs and the low. REAL backpacking, hostels, transport.

Ica #PERU is incredible !!
My belief is that we were put into this world of wonders and beauty with a special ability to appreciate them, in some cases to have the fun of taking a hand in developing them, and also in being able to help other people instead of overreaching them and, through it all, to enjoy life - that is, to be happy.

Sand boarding in Ica, Peru - Huacachina - Pisco
I found some old videos in a cheap camera.
The videos were a part of my first Peruvian adventure. These were my last few hours in Peru and I'm glad I went out with a sandy bang. Still had sand in my shoes when I got to Miami.
I Loved Perú. I'm going back.

But this is sand not snow....
Sandboarding in the Peruvian desert is just one of the extreme sports available to tourists seeking adventure.
Here in the Ica desert, the sky is blue and endless rows of pale, sandy mountains are waiting to be surfed.
Local sand boarding enthusiasts like Martin Guerra are happy to tutor those new to the sport.
I'm using candle-wax on the board's base that is made out of formica. This is a snow-board that has been altered so it can slide on the sand. he explains.
It's not as easy as it looks and part of the fun is shaking the sand out of your trousers.
Hidden within a valley of dunes, an oasis awaits in the small town of Huacachina.
A haven for sand-boarding tours, Huacachina offers a variety of backpacker hostels and traditional hotels that can accommodate any budget.

Awesome Dune Buggy Adventure! Lost in the Desert - Huacachina, Peru ????????
Explore the vast, untouched Pacific coast of Peru, where desert meets ocean. We get into tight squeezes, almost take a few tumbles and our dune buggy driver walks away in the desert after getting soaked by the raging ocean waves.

4:02 - Our driver gets soaked and silently walks off into the desert beyond eyesight
Episode 22
Adventuring up the Pacific Coastline, we stopped at an interesting location to climb on the rocks. Robbie even climbed under the rocks while Fil and the others took the other way around.
We are just having fun exploring whatever areas we can and cannot get to. While doing so Robbie didn’t see a wave a got his sandy shoe completely soaked.
The Pacific Ocean was crashing into the rocky shores that we were scaling and we had to be careful at times. At other times there were spots where the water was calmer and we found something alive besides us in this empty desert.
The adventuring nature took Fil to the edge of a crumbling drop off where he was forced to jump and have Robbie catch his arm and pull him to a safer location.
The ocean struck again when it soaked one side of our dune buggy drive who didn’t say anything to us ( he barely spoke English anyway ) and decided to take a long walk straight into the desert until he was so small to our eyes we could not see him. We started to look at ourselves and the buggy wondering if we were going to have to drive this thing or is our driver coming back?
Huacachina is backpacker’s paradise in the southwestern desert of Peru. This small mystical village in the Ica province is a natural oasis and is featured on the 50 sole (Peru’s official currency). With enormous sand dunes on all sides, it’s a wonder the town isn’t covered by the barren desert that surrounds it. Dune Buggies and Sandboards are the way of life around here, just don’t forget to bring the water or you may be seeing a mirage.
