Sir Adrian Boult conducts Sir Edward Elgar's ‘The Dream of Gerontius’ (1968)
Excerpts from Sir Adrian Boult conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra – with Rodney Friend as leader – and the London Philharmonic Choir, recorded in Canterbury Cathedral on the 27th and 28th March 1968 by the BBC.
One of the first classical music performances to be filmed in colour, it will be screened ahead of the last ever concert in the Adrian Boult Hall, Birmingham Conservatoire on Sunday 26 June.
Birmingham Conservatoire, part of Birmingham City University, is now preparing to move to its new £56 million home in the Eastside region of the City, currently under construction and due to open in 2017.
The full 1968 recording of ‘The Dream of Gerontius’ will receive a long-awaited double-DVD release in October this year by ICA Classics who are currently cleaning, restoring and digitally remastering the original recording, shown here.

'With This String...' Concert 2014
The Adrian Boult Hall hosted another enjoyable and entertaining afternoon concert by The Heart of England Suzuki Group musicians led by Tim Beilby and teachers.
The children put on a wonderful 'wedding' themed show laced with the usual imaginative surprises many based on the animated film 'Up'. Fuoco Strings and the soloists also delighted the audience with their contributions.

“Don't be fooled, music holds no facts; it's just an act; it's just an act” (Lisa, 2015).

A Walk on the Wild Side is an indoor 'no-headphones' Soundwalk/Son Et Lumiere commissioned by Frontiers Festival 2015. The walk contained characters from Nelson Algren's 1956 book A Walk on the Wild Side, from Lou Reed's famous 1972 song of the same name (from the album Transformer), Female characters were appropriated from Hasbro Toys and Michael Bay's Transformers franchise, including a shrine to Nightbird, the first ever female character in the franchise.

• Crotch (As in the British quarter-noot, a “crotchet”, or the groin area of the human body)
• A Walk on the Wild Side: General Ambience
Props, costumes, lighting and sound were all created specifically to create an immersive, and disorientating environment for the audience. The performance was a brief study of the notion of gender in music and in musical notation, the idea of sex and sexuality as a form of music.
What actually happens
1. Sex not Text // Don't be fooled music holds no facts; it's just an act, it's just an act.
Piano-playing sperms play fast music as they race towards a giant singing egg-cell. On the balcony above, Birmingham pop-idol Lisa rants about musical facade to a wobbly dub-step tempo. The title refers to my struggle to “show not tell” concepts in music – to try and make the meaning clear without using words.

2. A Minor Vagina
The audience exit the “sperm hall” and enter the tunnel. Inside, there is a new lounge track “Venus” playing, created by Vo-coding the piece through the moment in Holst's Venus. UV light picks out a very camp record cover of Holst's The Planets, conducted by Adrian Boult (the Honorary conductor of Birmingham Conservatoire) and several pages of the score to “Venus: Bringer of Love” on the wall. Further pages of the score lie on the table and UV marker pens encourage the audience to graffiti the notation with sexual imagery.
Keen eyed audience members will notice that the scores on the wall are gradually zooming in on the same area, in A minor:
Text on the wall reads: “THE PROBLEM
1. Adrian Boult and Gustav Holst. An incident where two notes were found to be having sex in public and “even worse: on paper” (2015)
2. The incident received media attention, and it was deemed inappropriate that notes should have sex on stage. Speculation suggested that notes had been “getting away with this for a long time”.
3. An underground club called The Pig was founded, where notes could practise freely without fear of retribution or even potential libal.
4. Eventually a study was done on the process, which was so similar to the term “harmony” that a new term was deemed unnecessary.
5. Due to copyright legislation, it was deemed that some notes could not appear alongside others without a lengthy permissions procedure; this made it increasingly difficult for notes to meet in public spaces.
6. During this time, some human beings even dared to claim that the notes were their personal property, and in order to mask this modern enslavement they labelled the property “intellectual” and “mechanical”. Individuals who practised this form of self-proclaimed 'ideation' became involved in complex and ultimately nullified court cases.”
On the wall are some headphone with the particular moment in the score (pictured above) slowed down increasingly to hear the details inside.
3. Shocked Fox

4. Crotch
Popular music artist Robin Thicke dances his crotch all over a giant crotchet whilst listening to/singing his controversial hit song “Blurred Lines”. Around them both are crotchet rests in light, which are broken by the man's shadow as he dances.
5. Shrine to Nightbird
Shrine dedicated to Nightbird, the first female character to appear in the Transformers franchise in the very first series “G1”. Not yet officially acknowledged as a transformer in her own right, Nightbird was described on the Transformers wikia as “a giant female ninja robot built to “benefit mankind”” (tfwikia.net).


6. Diagram Video
The voice of the singer from the sperm room is captured by this visual patch and the audio signal moves like sperm through intercourse.
7. ACHILLES THE BIRMINGHAM STRONG BOY
With his shoes tied around his neck, we are left with a loosely appropriated character from Nelson Algren's novel “Achilles – The Birmingham Strong Boy”, depicted here as a drummer with digital snare drum and text explaining the installation.

'The Lion String' Concert 2015
Parents, families and friends witnessed in wonder the annual offering from The Heart of England Suzuki Group. This year's theme was based on Disney's highly popular 'The Lion King'.
Once again, a throughly appreciated concert given by the enthusiastic young performers filled The Adrian Boult Hall with music from the film and classical composers. King lion Tim Beilby was ably assisted by the teachers.
Dressed in all manner of animal costumes coupled with the usual on stage antics all under the watchful eye of the Ringmaster Vik. The Fuoco Strings and soloists were complimented by a surprise duet performance by Sue & Tim Beilby.

'The String and I' Concert 2013
A sunny Sunday afternoon and a delighted audience when the Heart of England Suzuki Group and Mr Beilby's pupils performed their annual concert.
Entitled 'The String and I', we heard music from the Rodgers and Hammerstein hit musical 'The King and I' and other classical music pieces. Held at The Adrian Boult Hall, Birmingham Conservatoire, one hundred and seventeen young musicians entertained parents and guests, and also enchanted everyone and with their wonderful costumes.
