ATHENS ( GREECE ) | PLAKA in ATHENS | SHOPPING IN ATHENS | GREECE ADVENTURE | LOVING ATHENS
“In the shadow of the Acropolis and its ancient temples, hillside Plaka has a village feel, with narrow cobblestone streets lined with tiny shops selling jewelry, clothes and local ceramics. Sidewalk cafes and family-run tavernas stay open until late, and Cine Paris shows classic movies al fresco. Nearby, the whitewashed homes of the Anafiotika neighborhood give the small enclave a Greek-island vibe.

Adrianou street. At the begging you will see restaurants and cafeterias and later street vendors selling used goods. At the end of Adrianou street is the Thissio metro station. Video Actually it is no Metro station but an urban electric railway station. panorama Metro has two lines and it is created in 2000 before the olympic games. The Urban electric railway has a history of 150 years. . Nowadays it operates the same way like Metro. For legal reasons it is called differently. Before Olympic Games its appearance was renovated. A few years ago a new structural renovation made. Now it is a little faster and more comfortable. Because of the stations proximity faster speeds are impossible to be achieved. Turn left and walk at the big pedestrianized Agion Asomaton street.

This part of Adrianou street doesn't have shops selling merchandises. it is full of cafeterias and restaurants. Very lively place, especially during summer nights. At the right side is the wonderful view of Acropolis and the archeological area of Archea Agora. panorama Greece has a mild weather, even during winter. So Greeks love taking their coffee outside. Coffee shops are places to meet and speak. Greeks prefer them more than their homes for their meetings. In Greece the coffee culture is powerful since the Ottomans rule. Greeks spent hours in coffee shops daily with their mates chatting and watching others people pass in front of them. Perhaps this is the main reason a cup of coffee in Greece, costs more than in the rest of Europe.

It is located at the northern part of the Acropolis and, in fact, the Acropolis is officially part of the area.. The area is home to clothing boutiques, souvenir shops, and specialty stores, and is a major tourist attraction in Athens and Attica for bargain shopping. Back to Vironos. Turn right to Lisikratous street and after 15 meters at the beginning of Adrianou street. At the square of Agia Ekaterini church many taxis drivers park illegally during evening hours and wait their lovely tourist customers. Some of them exploit foreigners ignorance . So be careful. Only at the near Syntagma square Taxi drivers park legally under permanent police presence. Try the metro instead of taxis. It is clean, consistent , secure and much faster. Metro as a rule starts about 5:30 AM and closes after midnight. During Fridays and Saturdays nights its timetable extends at 2 AM for discouraging drunk drivers.
Adrianou street is the backbone of touristic Athens. No tall new buildings, no excessive use of cement. Buildings for various reasons are remained unchanged from the '60s uncontrolled reconstruction of Athens. Until 1970 Adrianou street was undervalued and a few people bothered to upgrade it. After 1980 with the strong intervention of culture minister and actress Melina Merkouri the street and the Area around it began to be developed. Old houses are prevented by law to be demolished or renovated without permission. Many tasteful new owners have spent fortunes to renovate some of them. Traces of the old decadence can still be found. Nowadays Adrianou is considered one of the most expensive streets to live. Prominent and healthy greeks have bought houses or apartments around Adrianou street. Those with a view to Acropolis are impossible to be bought without pulling strings. Browse at the touristic shops which serve every need a visitor have. Don't search for bargains here. You will be later disappointed. It's a safe street at all times. The shops in Adrianou, like in the whole area of my Athens Walk, have tourist operating hours. That means, especially during high season, that most of them are opened from 8 AM the morning to 3 AM the night. The presence of tourist and municipal police is constant. Many illegal street vendors sell every fake item you can imagine. They appear and disappear instantly. If you simple show no interest they won't be persistent.
