The Aduana or Intendencia Near the Philippine Immigration Office - Intamuros
The Aduana or Intendencia Near the Philippine Immigration Office is an old historic building in the area of Intramuros. The building you see on the left with with a turquoise roof is the Philippine Bureau of Immigration. It is located is directly across the street from Plaza Espana.
This old building, destroyed by fire in 1976 has along history. It has served a customs building, central administration, and as the old Philippine Central Bank. It also housed the commission on Elections and the National Treasury.
It was build as a customs house ( intendencia ) in 1796 within the fortified city of Manila so to attract the merchant to the inside of the city rather than out side of it. The customs house prior to it's construction was located on the north side of the Pasig River.
Intamuros means 'city in walls' in Latin. Old Manila was a city within walls. Intramuros is the oldest and the historic center of Manila. The walls still remain and will be shown in detail in my next few videos.
I am following this short video with videos taken of the wall inside outside and from above.
I moved to The Philippines Sept 6, 2012. with a backpack, my computer, and drawing/art material to write, play and make videos. This Vlog of life here is for my memories and show my friends and family what it is like living in the Philippines. To date, I have made almost 300 videos.

Hispanic Intramuros Manila
Intramuros (Latin: within the walls) is the historic centre and oldest district of Manila, the capital city of the Philippines.
Also known as the Ciudad Murada (Walled City) because of its most famous feature: a nearly three-mile-long circuit of massive
stone walls and fortifications that almost completely surrounds the entire district.
From the city's foundation in 1571 to the end of Spanish rule in 1898, Intramuros was Manila.
The Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi laid the foundations of the new capital on the former site of Maynilad, a palisaded riverside settlement ruled by a native chieftain. To protect the inhabitants from attack, in the late 1500s construction began on a series of stone walls and fortifications that would eventually enclose a pentagonal area approximately 0.67 sq km in size, within which lay a tight grid-like system of streets and a main square surrounded by government structures. The defensive curtain was more or less completed by the 1700s, although improvements and other construction work continued well into the next century.

Within the protective walls rose a city of stone palaces, churches, monasteries, convents, schools, and fine courtyard houses. In the centuries that followed, Manila (meaning Intramuros) served as the capital of the Spanish East Indies - the centre of commerce, education, government, and religion in Spain's most distant imperial possession.
Except for a brief period under British rule (1762-1764), Intramuros remained a Spanish city until 1898, when the U.S. took control of the Philippines at the end of the Spanish-American War.
In 1945, during the fierce Battle of Manila between American, Filipino and Japanese forces, Intramuros was almost completely destroyed. Instead of rebuilding on the same site, many of the religious orders and educational institutions that once resided in the walled district packed up and moved elsewhere. Although steps were taken to protect the city's historic character, vague laws and poor enforcement led to many unsightly modern buildings being built upon the ruins of the old. In 1979, the Intramuros Administration was established and stronger measures introduced in order to preserve what was left.
Many of the city's ancient gates and most of the walls have since been restored. On the other hand, there has been almost no progress in the reconstruction of key landmarks (such as major churches and old government buildings), due in part to a serious lack of funds and the existence of new structures.
Get in
By taxi
For visitors who don't mind shelling out a little extra - and putting up with rush-hour traffic jams - Manila's relatively inexpensive taxis are probably the easiest and most direct way of reaching Intramuros from elsewhere in the city. The current flagdown rate is ₱40, and the fare goes up in increments of ₱3.50 every 300 metres.
By train
The nearest railway station is Central Terminal (LRT-1 / Yellow Line) [33]. Though within sight of the eastern walls, the station is a pretty long walk from the western part of Intramuros (where many of the major sights are located), so tourists headed in that direction might consider covering the rest of the journey by taxi.
By water bus
The Pasig River Ferry used to stop at Plaza México station, not far from the ruins of the Intendencia (Aduana) building, but according to reports the service has been suspended for an indefinite period. If operations resume in the future, the ferry will likely use this same stopping point.

“A number of business people that we’ve approach also said there’s a significant movement yung mga goods nila nakukuha din nila,” saad ni Lacierda.
sinabi ni presidential spokesperson, sa ngayon inaasahan nila ang pagdating pa ng mga kargamento ngayong holiday season kayat tinatayang sa susunod pang taon maayos ang problema sa port congestion.
“Yes we expect a lot of more imports coming in and that’s why the work of the ports, the efforts to improve the port congestion will still continue,” pahayag ni Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda.
“But hopefully after the Christmas season after everything quiets down we’ll be able to relieve, remove all these congestion on the port,” dagdag pa nito. (Nel Maribojoc / Ruth Navales, UNTV News)
Iconic Historical Walled City of Intramuros Manila Philippines | VLOG 22
The walled city of Intramuros is one of the most iconic historical place in the Philippines. Built in the late 16th century by the Spanish Empire to protect the city from foreign invaders. At the end of Spanish–American War, Spain renounced the Philippines and several other territories to the United States as part of the Treat of Paris terms for 20 million dollars. In 1941 during the World War II, the Imperial Japanese Army invaded the Philippines and the walls of Intramuros was occuppied by the invaders. And in 1945, the liberation of Manila began. Led by U.S. General Douglas MacArthur, the United States Army, Philippine Commonwealth Army and Guerrillas joined forces to defeat the 30,000 Japanese defenders. The main defense of the Japanese army was the walled city of Intramuros but with the military technologies of the American Army, the walled city of Intramuros was obliterated by bombs leaving only 5% of the structures which include the San Agustin Church and 60% of the defense walls.
I barely scratched the vast intricate details of Intramuros in my video so I invite you, come visit the Philippines, come visit the great historical place Intramuros!

People inside the Intramuros are friendly, hospitable and knowledgeable about the histories.
I can say that it is safe inside this tourist destination, there are guards at the gates and also there are other guards roaming around.
The Garden Master inside the San Diego Gardens is very knowledgeable about the stories behind Intramuros and I would like to give credits to him of some of the information I've mentioned about. He is the grandson of a cook that served the U.S. Army inside the walls and the Bonsai in the video is his creation.

The 500-Piso Commemorative Non-Circulation Legal Tender Silver Coin. 70th Anniversary of Central Banking in the Philippines.
Just like the iconic Philippine eagle atop its perch, the Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) stands guard over the Philippine economic landscape from its equally iconic head office in Roxas Boulevard, Manila. Both icons are prominently featured in the obverse of the specially minted 500-Piso commemorative coin in celebration of the 70th anniversary of central banking in the Philippines.
The 70-years history of the country's central monetary authority is a narrative of its continuous transformation, in keeping with the changing economic needs of the country and its people. This reflected in the seals that have symbolized the institution over the years which are engraved on the reverse of the coin. Also featured is the facade of the Aduana Building in Intramuros, Manila, the structure that housed the central bank in its early years.

Heritage buildings surround the old city of Manila along
Intramuros, Port Area, Lawton, Binondo, Escolta. Some ruined landmarks built around late 1800s to early 1900s were destroyed during the war and were left abandoned. These structures desperately need rigorous restoration: El Hogar (1914), Aduana or Customs House (1923), Singer and Heacock buildings (Port Area).

Intendencia in Intramuros: Relic of the Philippines' Colonial Past
An empty shell of the Intendencia building still stands in Intramuros despite ravages of time. It had been the Aduana or Customs House during the Spanish period. After the Second World War, it housed the Mint and the Central Bank of the Philippines. In 1979, it was gutted by fire. There are plans to restore the building and convert it into National Archives.

A Grand But Costly Restoration
A historic building in Intramuros, the former walled city of Manila, has gotten a new look. Fiona Nicolas takes a walk through the historic Ayuntamiento building and digs deeper into what appears to be a very costly restoration.
