Week 2 – Cabo San Lucas & Todos Santos
Cabo – Day 1-6
Arriving in Cabo was pretty awesome as it was the official start of our World Tour! From the moment we touched down, we couldn't contain our excitement and there were smiles all round. Even as we walked out of the airport there were bars either side, blaring the tunes and people were having shots to get into the party mood. I guess thats what Cabo is known for, Spring Break travellers and partying! We had arrived just after Spring break therefore we were hoping for a more quiet time!
We had already arranged car hire from Mex Rent a Car as we knew that we wanted to explore the Baja and having a car would give us that flexibility. It total cost for 10 days in a medium automatic car was £145.
There are quite a few location options, but the most common and nearest to the airport are San Jose or Cabo San Lucas. We opted for Cabo San Lucas and stayed at Hotel Mar De Cortez, about 10min walk from the Marina.
The Hotel was modest but clean, it had a pool, terrace and a restaurant so kids were happy! We spent our time in Cabo, relaxing and exploring.
The Marina
Is a great place and very central, there are lots of different sized boats with restaurants all around the square. There are many shacks offering various excursions and vendors offering to take you to the famous 'Archo' for $10 (£7.20). It is touristy so you will pay more for meals compared to the street restaurants. It is lovely though, especially as you keep walking towards Medano Beach.
Medano Beach
This is the main beach in Cabo. There is the super busy part by the Mango Deck and then the a more quiet end which is easy to access from the bottom of the Marina. We preferred relaxing at that end.
The Cabo Legend
We did an excursion with the Cabo Legends Pirate Ship for a bit of entertainment for the kids, to see the Arco and to do a spot of snorkelling! It was an amazing day out. It cost $45 (£32.50) per adult and included drinks and food (alcoholic and non), our kids aged 2 and 5 were free. We got close to the Arch and the Captain gave us some information along the way, there was a DJ spinning tunes the whole way and all the staff were very friendly and helpful. The snorkelling wasn't great as the water was a little rough and visibility was poor but we would still recommend this excursion as it was super fun.
Cabo Restaurant Recommendations
Tacos Guss – cheap hole in the wall spot where you can get all the Mexican favourites for very low prices 25pesos (£1) for a taco.
La Casitas - A more polished restaurant off the beaten track that serves amazing sushi, wood fired pizzas and other items too. We can also vouch for the salads which were fresh and lovely.
Todos Santos – Day 6-7
We planned in a stop to the small arty town of Todos Santos as it was bang in the middle of our route from Cabo to La Paz and thought it would be a good rest stop. Only 1 hour from Cabo, the drive was easy on highway Mexico 19 And very scenic.
We arrived in Todos Santos on a Sunday and as its pretty religious, the town was very quiet and it seemed that everyone was in the Missiones, praying. The town has a lot of art and cute painted pottery on the streets. It has a Hotel named Hotel California and although some people think there is some connection to the Eagles song, I don't believe there is. There are also some nice beaches about 20min drive from Todos Santos named Playa Cerritos and Playa Pescadero, particularly good if you are a surfer.

If you want a hearty breakfast, we recommend heading to Cafe Lix who serve a variety of egg breakfasts, bagels and waffles plus you can actually get a good English Breakfast brew!

Ep#19: searching for whales in Baja - vanlife family in Mexico
French/Czech minimalist family of 4 traveling for one year from Canada to Panama in a VW California van.
IN THIS EPISODE: We headed to Pto Adolfo Lopez Mateos (4/5h drive north of Todos Santos) on January 3rd hoping to spot grey whales and we got really close to dozens of curious dolphins. We then headed back to Todos Santos where we chartered a boat from local fishermen to see humpback whales from really close. Baja is one of the best places where to see whales but the season starts in February however we had booked the ferry to mainland Mexico for January 6th and really hoped to cross off this item from our bucket list before leaving Baja.
Our story: We had a good life in Europe but were missing some adventure so we left everything and shipped our van to Canada to live for one year in 8m2 with our boys (2& 4years old) and discover the Americas with them.
Our route: Canada, USA, Mexico (Baja & Mainland), Belize, Guatemala, Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.

MEXICO VACATION VLOG 2019 | ADVENTURES IN CANCUN!
Hello lovelies! I can't believe it took me this long to edit and upload my Mexico vlog! This is a trip that I took with Anita back in July! We traveled to Cancun, not only to get some vacation time in, but also to attend a good friend's wedding. The whole trip was just wonderful, except for the fact that I lost my sunglasses in the ocean and got burned by a cigarette (I wasn't smoking). All in all, it was a great time and I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I do!

Driving in Baja is no joke. There are many a driver that come down to enjoy their vacation and have terrible accidents instead. We are aware of that. We don't enjoy taking chances but there are some things that are worth the risk. Not much, but yes, there are some things.
At the end of our long drive we were invited in to Restaurant Ojo de Liebre as welcomed guests. The lovely family that runs the restaurant was very accommodating and stayed open so we could have dinner. They have a bathroom and shower in the back of the restaurant and they also have wifi but they claim that it is a little slow. The bathroom worked well but we didn't use the shower. There is cell reception from their location just outside of Guerrero Negro and the wifi was sufficient to check emails and other social media. The food was warm, tasty and very much appreciated. They have a very large lot that can easily fit 5-7 rigs. We were three truck and trailers and they still had lots of space to spare.
They provide free RV parking with a meal. That is a great exchange in my opinion and we felt safer parking on someone's property than we if owe had just parked on the side of the road. This option also helps to support the local economy.
We would definitely stay here again.

Malarrimo RV Park
We stayed at Malarrimo RV Park for four nights and we enjoyed our stay. It's a secure park with full hook-ups, clean working bathrooms, and showers with decent pressure. Some days we showered with lukewarm water. We also had wifi but it was pretty slow. Only sufficient for checking emails and social media. These would be our two suggestions for improvement: a larger hot water tank for the showers and better internet connectivity. We also did notice the sewer smell when there were lots of people camped. They get a lot of organized Caravans with big rigs.
Otherwise, we enjoyed the nice Gazebo, the great prices, and the location close to everything in town. They also organize whale tours with bilingual guides.

Esta hermosa bahía obtuvo su nombre original (Ensenada de los Muertos) debido a que en el siglo XIX se le negó desembarcar a un buque con pasajeros a la Bahía de La Paz, pues sus ocupantes habían sido afectados por una epidemia de alguna enfermedad de la época. Decidieron entonces, abandonar en esas playas a los enfermos más graves, a los moribundos y a los ya muertos.
Esta hermosa playa se llena de campistas en Semana Santa y durante todo el año acuden muchas personas aficionadas a la pesca.
Es un lugar con mucha tradición y que había permanecido inalterada hasta hace no mucho, ahora ostenta un nuevo nombre cambiado por los desarrolladores inmobiliarios a los que no les gustó así como estaba y ahora la llaman “Bay of Dreams”. Éste desarrollo cuenta con restaurante, proyectos de campo de golf y casas de lujo.
ENGLISH:
This beautiful bay got its original name Ensenada de los Muertos (Cove of the Dead) in the 19th Century when a passenger ship was denied anchorage at the Bay of La Paz, because it's occupants had been affected by an epidemic of an illness from that time. They then decided to abandon the most ill, dying or already dead on that beach.
This beautiful beach gets filled with campers on the week of Semana Santa (Easter week) and is visited all year long by fishing enthusiasts.
It is a place of much traditions and had remained unaltered until recently. It now boasts a new name changed by the real estate developers who did not like the original one and who now call it Bay of Dreams. This development has a restaurant and projects such as golf courses and luxury homes.
