South America & Antarctica Explorer Port Stanley, Falkland Islands 2 15 2017
A visit to Port Stanley, Falkland Islands as one of many stops while on a South American cruise. We toured the greater area of Stanley by bus, then walked the main streets of the port city, visited the local museum and had lunch at Bitter Sweet where we enjoyed some fish & chips and a local beer.

South Georgia and the Falklands - Destination Highlights. Antarctica expedition cruising
The mysterious far-away Antarctica is closer than you think! Poseidon Expeditions takes you right where the action is, with expedition cruises to the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. Each destination is a highlight in itself, showcasing some of the most vibrant wildlife, overwhelming scenery and impressive exploration history.
Bird and marine wildlife lovers will cherish the days spent on the Falkland Islands as the species that live here outnumber us greatly. Guided by sea, ice and weather conditions, the expedition encounters penguins and seabirds, playful fur and elephant seals, and colonies of prions, petrels and terns hovering above the islands.
South Georgia captures the essence of Arctic wildlife, bursting at the seams with fauna. When nature is involved, not everything may go according to plan, but our expert navigation team will make the most of the conditions presented to us. Being off-script boosts the adventure spirit!
The islands are said to host upwards of 100 million seabirds, including numerous species of albatross, prions, petrels, and terns. The numbers are astounding: over 100,000 elephant seals and three million fur seals, and enough penguins to fill every cabin on our cruise ship. Unfortunately, they won’t be coming home with us, but some memorable interactions are in store. Antarctica’s visitor regulations require that you remain at least five meters away from the penguins in order to not disturb them, but these curious little guys frequently make the first move, allowing you to observe them up-close.
South Georgia and the Falklands are a great choice for your your next adventure:

Best Places to Visit in Falkland Islands
Best Places to Visit in Falkland Islands
Covering an area of around 7,500 square kilometers in the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean, the Falkland Islands - Islas Malvinas to the Argentinians - encompass some 778 islands. Despite the fact they're only 483 kilometers off the coast of Argentina and 12,000 kilometers from England, the islands are a British Overseas Territory. The two largest islands in the archipelago, West Falkland and East Falkland, are where you'll find the majority of this tiny country's 3,000 or so residents (most of them of British descent).
Despite its remote location - or perhaps because of it - these cold, hilly islands attract a surprising number of tourists. Served by direct flights from the UK and South America, as well as visited by many cruise ships, the Falklands are perfectly situated to tap into the growing demand for tourists visiting the Antarctic. The Falklands' main attraction is undoubtedly its wildlife; it boasts numerous species of birds and marine mammals, along with a number of great tour options that will get you up close to them. Other popular Falkland Island activities include fishing, trekking, hiking, climbing, kayaking, and mountain biking. Falkland Islands & Bluff Cove 26 Feb 2019
Come see what it is like to visit the remote but fascinating Falkland Islands via cruise ship. See footage of Gentoo and King Penguin behavior. We tendered into Stanley and it was like we were in a small town in rural England. We took a three hour excursion to Bluff Cove, a sheep and cattle farm with a beach that hosts Gentoos and Kings. Enjoy!
One of our guides gave an Impromptu talk about the 1982 war between the UK and Argentina as we drove past places where battles took place. Here is a link to a well done documentary on the war-

Falkland Islands
On the Falkland Islands the main attraction is it's wildlife, particularily the curious Gentoo penguin that frolic offshore at Bluff Cove Lagoon. Along the way to the Lagoon you see nothing but pristine farmland, rolling hills and streams. At a visit to a nearby sheep farm I watched a shearing demonstration.

Winter in the Falklands and not the best time of year to view the Islands' wildlife.
But if you're as determined as the MPA Conservation Group, and don't mind a 'white knuckle ride' to get there - there is still a chance to glimpse wildlife in its natural habitat.

South Georgia & Falklands Expedition Adventure Cruise | ExpeditionTrips
You are invited to join ExpeditionTrips' founder and President, Ashton Palmer, on a special voyage to South Georgia and the Falkland Islands!
Peter Hillary and Jamling Tenzing Norgay (sons of the first men to summit Mt. Everest), mountaineering legends Guy Cotter and Tommy Heinrich, and Jeremy Lindblad will recreate Sir Ernest Shackleton's historic crossing of South Georgia from King Haakon Bay in the south to Stromness Bay – 30 miles across mountains and glaciers.
There is space for a few experienced climbers to join the entire crossing, and—in addition to discovering vast king penguin colonies, witnessing elephant seal antics, and gaining deep insight into a place steeped in history—all guests are invited to participate in the final segment of Shackleton's historic traverse from Fortuna Bay to Stromness.
Trekking on the Falkland Islands
The Falkland Islands must surely be considered amongst the best places in the world in which to walk. With such a sparse human population it is rare to meet anyone else outside Stanley. This is the essence of the walking experience, choose your own company then enjoy a very personal relationship with just the wilderness and wildlife.
