Within a few kilometres of Oldtown cottage there are numerous secluded beaches, rocky inlets and coves - ideal paygrounds for children of all ages. And just 1 km from the holiday home is the fabulous Ballyhiernan Strand. Ballyhiernan Strand is home to the Adventure One Surfing School. Adventure One is the leading ISA (Irish Surfing Association) approved school on the north coast of Donegal and operates right throughout the holiday season. Ballyhiernan beach is also ideal for swimming, walking windsurfing and kite flying.

The first of many paragliders, Fanad is a beautiful spot to go, whether you are paragiliding, surfing, kayaking, trekking the hills or just walking the beaches.

Radharc na Locha is a beautifully restored 2 storey Irish farmhouse with an idyllic setting overlooking Shannagh Lake near the Atlantic shoreline of the Fanad Peninsula in North Donegal. The holiday home lies along the route of Irelands Wild Atlantic Way and is just 5km from one of its 'Signature Points' - Fanad Head Lighthouse.

The holiday home has 3 spacious first floor bedrooms to sleep 5 very comfortably. The bright master bedroom has a stylish ensuite facility. The double bedroom to the back of the house has views of Shannagh Lake and the Atlantic Ocean. There is also a tastefully decorated bathroom on the first floor.

On the ground floor there is large modern kitchen with the kitchen sink window enjoying lovely lake views There is a small dining table in the kitchen and a more traditional dining room opening out from the kitchen. The living room enjoys lake views and is furnished and decorated in an Irish farmhouse style. There is a lawn to one side of the house with paving to the front back and other side. The paved area to the back is the perfect spot to sit back and enjoy the lake views.

Visitors to the holiday home have rights to fish on Shannagh Lake which has both natural and stocked brown trout. Fishing is from the shore only - no boats are allowed on the lake. Other fishing lakes nearby include Kinny Lake and Kindrum Lake. Sea fishing is also popular along the northern coastline of the Fanad Peninsula.

Although situated in a peaceful rural location, the holiday home is within easy driving distance of some major tourist amenities. The ISA Approved Adventure One Surf School is based at the fabulous Ballyhiernan Strand which is just 3km away. A pitch and putt course is just across the road from the beach. The top class links golf course and blue flag beach at Portsalon are just over 7km away. The Harry Blaney Bridge over Mulroy Bay means the two holiday resorts of Carrigart and Downings are a 20 minute drive . Near Downings is the fabulous Rosapenna Golf Resort.

And despite its rural location the holiday home has a post office and a shop right on its doorstep - and not just any shop. McAteers of Shannagh is a real throw back in time. It is a shop where literally anything from a needle to an anchor can be bought.

August bank holiday weekend at TurfnSurf

The swell was back in Bundoran for the August bank holiday weekend. Even if the weather was not that good on the Saturday, condtions were glassy and really enjoyable in Rossnowlagh on the Saturday and Tullan on the sunday.

Annemarie Ward - 2010 World Open Water Swimming Woman of the Year
The North (Irish) Channel is renowned for being the toughest channel swim in the world - cold, rough, filled with jellyfish and fraught with unpredictable weather. But it was site to the tenacious efforts of one Irish women who never quit until she reached the other side.

Annemarie Ward, an unlikely endurance heroine, joined one of the most elite and exclusive marathon clubs in the world - the 11 members of the North (Irish) Channel club. Her never-say-never 18 hour 59 minute effort - on her fourth attempt - courageously ended in darkness at 3:35 am.

With both the English Channel and North Channel under her belt, Annemarie completely reversed her previously unhealthful lifestyle - an inspirational story in itself - and is now one of the world's most accomplished cold-water channel swimmers. Starting humbly and simply with a 2-mile charity swim, Annemarie is now deservedly recognized by her peers and honored for reaching the pinnacle of her sport.

Kieran Fitzgerald recalls, What a lot of people don't know about is about her first attempt in August where she swam for four hours in darkness in horrendous jellyfish conditions. She was swung with over two hundred stings and had to be hospitalized.

To jump back into the sea with that experience in mind takes a tremendously focused and dedicated athlete.

For her amazing swim between Ireland and Scotland (see map of channel above), her admirable lifestyle turnaround and dedication to charity swims, Annemarie was selected as the 2010 World Open Water Swimming Woman of the Year.

Among the millions of female open water swimmers around the world, the 12 nominees clearly stood out - their exploits, histories and lifestyles are all incredibly inspirational for they overcame failures, obstacles and disappointments at some point in their swimming careers. But they forged on, positively and courageously. As the award is meant to symbolize, the nominees (1) embodied the spirit of open water swimming, (2) possess the sense of adventure, tenacity and perseverance that open water swimmers are known for, and (3) most positively influenced the world of open water swimming in 2010.

The final results of the 2010 vote were as follows:
