Iceland Auroras and Adventures

Ellen and I went to Iceland from March 17-23, 2013. We timed our trip to occur in the spring so that there were 12 hours of daylight for us to explore the Icelandic countryside while there were still 12 hours of nighttime where we might be fortunate enough to see the Northern Lights. Be some phenomenal stroke of luck, there was a large Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) from the Sun on March 15 (the day before we left for Iceland) and that CME hit Earth's magnetosphere on St Patrick's day kicking off an epic display of auroras over Reykjavik. The St Patrick's day solar storm was widely reported on spaceweather.com, cnn.com, and other news outlets and we were fortunate enough to witness it first hand on a clear night from the public parking lot near the Grótta light house (64° 09′ 54″ N 22° 01′ 21″ W). The photos were taken from a compact fixed tripod (sitting on top of our rental car) with my Canon T2i DSLR. Most of the photos were 18mm, f3.6, ISO 1600, and 4-6 second exposures, with the focus fixed at infinity. I used a wired remote to force the camera to take an unlimited burst of images at the lowest built-in resolution (2592x1728) with as little delay between images as possible.
The last 4 clips of Auroras over the snow, iceberg, and glacier landscape were taken from the parking lot overlooking the Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon (64° 4′ 13″ N, 16° 12′ 42″ W) on the east side of the bridge. The Jökulsárlón clips were recorded on March 20, 2013 (a few days after the St Patrick's Day solar storm). Note that in many of the clips from both nights of aurora viewing it is possible to see Comet PANSTARRS low in the western sky near the last hints of twilight.

The video ends with some of the best video clips of activities that did not include Aurora viewing. First, an eruption of the Strokkur geyser, then a scenic overlook of the Skaftafellsjökull Glacier in Skaftafells National Park, then several clips of our afternoon snowmobiling tour (arcanum.is/) on the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap on top of the Katla volcano. There are also some additional video clips of icebergs at the beach and inside the lagoon at Jökulsárlón.

At 44 seconds into the video you can see me and the top of Ellen's head briefly step in front of the camera. This was the last photo of us taken together before I proposed to her and we became engaged.

British tourists killed after Land Cruiser plunges off Núpsvötn bridge in Iceland | ITV News

Three British tourists, including a child, have died when a 4x4 plunged into a riverside while crossing a bridge in Iceland.

Police confirmed four other Britons, including two children aged seven and nine, were among the injured in the crash after the Land Cruiser crashed through a railing on the one-lane crossing.

Four survivors were flown in a helicopter to a hospital in Iceland's capital Reykjavik.
