Guardians of Pashmina - Changpas | Changthang Photography Tour with Adventure Sindbad | Ladakh
Pashmina or as the west knows it – Cashmere is the finest wool from the land of Changthang and it literally means ‘soft gold’ in Kashmiri. This fine thinner-than-hair wool is hand-woven into shawls by the Kashmiri artisans and sold world over. But lesser known are the goat herders, the nomadic tribe endemic to the vast windswept high-altitude (4500m) cold desert plateau – Changthang. It is located at the South-Eastern corner of Ladakh extending 1600kms eastward into Tibet and into modern day China. With expansive highlands and giant sapphire lakes, it is home to the Changpas, the wandering nomads of this land.
For generations, they have roamed its huge swathes of nutritious pastures with their flocks weathering severe temperatures, high winds, and inhospitable terrain. It is warm in the summers and severely cold in the winters, dropping to -35 to – 40-degree Celsius. It is only in these extreme weather condition does the pashmina goats thrive to yield the best pashmina wool. Throughout the year the nomads keep moving with their huge flocks of goats & sheep along with yaks, horses and ferocious Tibetan Mastiffs which guard the flocks against predators – mainly wolves. Their tents are made of black yak wool to protect them from the harsh winds as they move from one encampment to the other. This yak-wool tent earns them the name ‘Rebo’ – called so by the local Ladakhis. The Rebo cover vast stretches of land over a year’s journey and some stunning locations, still hidden and unknown to most of us non-nomads.The Changpas have and are still living this hard way of life following customs and keeping the tradition of their tribe alive even today, untethered to the modern society.
Another aspect that helps is the protection of the Indian side of Changthang, as ‘Changthang Cold Desert Wildlife Sanctuary’ which consists of two large, world famous lakes Pangong Tso and Tsomoriri and much smaller, yet amazing ones across the region which totals to about 11 lakes and 10 marshes. It is only in recent times has this region along the Tibetan border been thrown open to tourism although with a permit issued from Leh. Changthang is also home to many rare species of migratory birds and other fauna including the black-necked crane, Tibetan wild ass(Kiang) and the Argali.
Our trip is designed to give explorers and photography enthusiasts a peek into the life and culture of these rugged dwellers and exotic landscapes that is their home! We start off with a 3-day acclimatization and mini photography sessions in and around Leh town where we cover stunning monasteries, ancient palaces, and little unknown nooks that will delight you. On Day 3, after we are better acclimatized we move to the heartland of the Rebo, in the backyard of the breathtaking Tsomoriri Lake. After a couple of nights, we move higher to a sprawling Valley surrounded by mountains all around and camp close to a lake.
The trip promises to be a feast for the eyes, with unimaginable visual imagery of India’s frontiers documenting the lesser known and changing lives of the Rebos of Changthang. This trip is ideal for photographers, people seeking quiet time and explorers in quest of unknown spectacular locations.
Who is this for?
This photography tour is for anyone interested in learning about the Changpa’s way of life. You need not be a professional to join the tour. We’ve crafted it keeping in mind the needs of beginners as well as more serious photographers.
What will you learn?
The tour is crafted to help participants document the way of life of the Changpa nomads right from portraits, the landscape they live in, to the little details of their everyday life. Beside this, we will also learn how to shoot the night sky as well one of those surreal looking time-lapse videos of the mountains.

Deo Tibba Family Trek with Adventure Sindbad | May 2018 | Himachal
The JCI Jaipur Oasis chapter's members showed keen interest to bring their families with little kids for a camping and trekking trip to the Himalaya. Adventure Sindbad customized a trip that would be within the comfort levels of all included. Deo Tibba Valley with its sprawling meadows and ample ease of reach from Manali was best suited for an adventure of this style. There were 7 families with 10 little kids between ages 2-12 and 5 of them were under the age of 5. They were kept busy with camping, day hikes, zip lining, horse riding and camp games. The Evenings were spent leisurely relishing some delicious food and dancing with friends around bonfires. We would like to thank JCI Jaipur Oasis for giving us an opportunity to show them that adventure camping in the mountains is for everyone in the family.

Stok Kangri - A Visual Climb | Part 1 - Acclimatization Walk | Adventure Sindbad | Ladakh
Stok Kangri at 6153m is a superb introduction to high altitude mountaineering in the Himalayas. It is considered a trekking peak that can be attempted without being bogged down by the technicalities and skill of mountaineering. On the other hand, Stok Kangri can prove to be a serious challenge depending on the snow and weather conditions on summit night.
In recent times this mountain has garnered so much popularity among amateurs and novice climbers, that it could easily be considered as the “common man’s Everest”! The most important aspect to consider while attempting Stok Kangri would be the acclimatization to high altitude. At 6153m, the peak is very high while the Base Camp itself is at a height of 4900m, as high as some passes one would encounter on a trekking trail in Ladakh, earning itself the name “The land of High Passes”. Hence, it is paramount to be completely acclimatized before the summit night increasing the chances for a successful attempt. For aiding acclimatization, Adventure Sindbad guides you through the sun scorched slopes of Matho La and through the arid vast lands Gangpoche, before reaching the base camp on Day 6 of the trip.
The trek up Stok Kangri is scenic to say the least. The vivid colours and hues of the Stok range changes as the curves that adorn the mountains. These steep slopes are home to some unique buckthorn shrubbery and other patched vegetation. The 'Bharaal' is a sight to behold in the mountains of the Stok Range. Also, the trek is layered with a stint of local essence, the shepherds living in the Doksas give a new perception to a 'hard life and a happy life', one gets to imbibe a little through their stories and generous offering of the local dairy products.
It isn’t everyone’s cup of tea to climb Stok Kangri, as there are no high camps allowed above Stok Base Camp, this stretches the summit night and increases exhaustion levels by the time we complete the attempt. The view of jagged mountain ranges, snow-clad peaks from the summit of Stok Kangri gratifies the journey through the night. As the trekkers’ descent, the panorama is much more enjoyed and absorbed with the jubilation of summiting Stok Kangri. The climb is definitely a test of endurance and promises to push your limits in a controlled setting. After high altitude trekking, this mountain would be first step in your path towards serious mountaineering and reaching higher summits in the Himalayan range.
Just the trek minus the climb, is in itself an extremely rewarding experience!
Acclimatization Walk is the first part of the 6 video series capturing the entire climb.
Migration of 100,000 Pashmina Goats & Sheep | Living with the Changpas of Ladakh - #5
The semi-nomadic lifestyle of the Changpas keeps them constantly on the move in search of pastures for their animals. Each tribe has their own set of grazing areas for different times of the year. They migrate between these places every few weeks, taking all their animals, their families and most of their belongings with them. The migration of the Changpas is quite the spectacle and I was fortunate enough to witness the most amazing spectacle of them all. A winter migration of the Changpas.

At an altitude of 14,000 to 17,000 feet in the western parts of Ladakh lives a community of semi-nomadic herders who have lived a self-sustained life for millenniums. Despite the new found connectivity with the modern world they have continued their wandering lifestyle that is essential for keeping their livestock well fed.
Every year, we conduct a photography tour to spend a week with this nomadic community. We spend time living in their settlements, understanding their lifestyle and photographing their everyday activities. Stok Kangri trek 2017 | Leh Ladakh | khardungla pass
Stok, one of the highest trekkable summit at 6125 mts is situated in Ladakh region on Jammu and Kashmir, India. Though one do not need to have a technical knowledge of mountaineering to climb this peak, this trek is not for newbies. With an experience of 5 Himalayan treks, I had enough courage to start the trek. But luck was missing and had to turn back on the deciding night at just 400 metres short of summit. I was broke physically and psychologically but kept myself together and enjoyed my rest of the time by riding to the Khardungla Pass, claimed as the highest motorable road in the world.
Here is my journey to some of the attractions in Ladakh and to an expedition which I'll not forget anytime soon.
Club Fred on the Stok Kangri / Ladakh with mountaneering guide Santosh Karki
Club Fred´s climb on Stok Kangri - It was not a piece of cake!
Even almost every travel agent in Ladakh is announcing the Stok Kangri ascent as an everybody can do trekking experience, the reality shows it is a an high alpin challenge. The hike from Stok-Palace to the basecamp at 4900m is a leisurely hike along a river playing down it's waters between steep and dusty, brown and sparsely green covered hillsides near the 1.camp Manikarma with grotesque towering walls and rock pinnacles. Having started from Leh everybody is high altitude adapted somehow, but nobody still can have has the slightest idea about the challenge ahead for everything is easy going. We have seen a lot of to be mounteers learning about handling the rope, using iceax and walking with crampons the frist time in their life outside the basecamp.
The climb starts usually at midnight, when you lucky as us under deep dark clear skies with glittering stars, the companions you have while you are troddling behind your headlight and guide in a omanipatmehum trance. First steep up a moraine on a sandy sliding path than steady gaining height ahead with little ups and downs till you reach the glacier basin. The length of this trail you will realize only when you come back and are longing for your basecamp. The glacier, type of 'Büßereis ' is brisk frozen mixed with rock and stones, little lagunas with an ice shell on top and flowing water underneath. Take care not break through to have dry shoes for the rest of the climb. It is getting steadily steeper and at one point you decide it is safer to put on crampons and take the ice ax for your safety. The morning glow is shedding light over the scenario and you find yourself in a 35-50 degree glacier slope. This 'Autobahn' can take you for a ride if you are not cautiously managing your crampons. There is no stopping for the next 500m downhill where you may slow down your ride in the shallower glacier if not you have tested on of the interspersed rock stops. Soon you become confident - the shoulder is in sight. A short recovery stop. Drink and grab some calories. Get the harnish ready, the guide has unrolled the rope. In the morning light the scenery enfolds the great alpin scenery you have come for to experience. Glaciers and mountain ranges around. You feel the thin air already but your spirits are high an the -don't say no, go, go, go- keeps you moving. You squeeze around a few rock corners, look down the jawing depths on both sides of trail or let pass the fitter climbers, who are already descending from the top and enlighten your spirits with 50m-more-meters or no more than 10min to climb. It's 7.30U! Now you are there, exhausted but lucky. A wide band of prayer flags plays the winds. You fall in the arms of your companion - we really made it and are lucky to sit on the top without unpacking our heavy duty anoraks. It is above 0 degree with only slight wind, so were carrying our dawn anoraks in vain. I look around and really, there is no mountain in your vicinity that is higher. Beyond the KardungLa glows the Saser Kangri, a 7600er from the Karakorum-Range, but here on the Stok-Range - we are the Top! You can almost locate the Hotel in Leh in the morning sun, where we are sitting on the terrace admiring the top we stand on now. ....
The summit moments are short and we get onto the rope for the descent. Now we are the ones, that encourage the ascenders while we are moving down. The descent is not much faster than the ascent, because of the rocky-icy terrain, but breathing gets easier every 15 min. 300m below the summit I suddenly have the urge to vormite. Is it exhaustion? Is it altitude sickness? Pain in the stomach will be my companion till I reach the basecamp. We are moving down steadily, while our guide has a permanent hand on the tight rope till the steep slope levels out. Down on the basin we Zick-zack over the icey islands of melting glacier. The sunlight has become strong and the glacier seems to swim away. My stomach still revolts but more hampering is my left leg, which demands frequent recovery stop. Now we realize what we have done the whole night troddling behind our headlamps: it's gonna be a long way home!
Me arriving at our tent with the delay of the handicap I crawl into my sleeping bag and as Franzi recorded fell into a 16h sleep,
Next morning is the washup-day. Of the around 100 climbers , who started at midnight, only one third made it to top. We proudly can say we were among them! Special thanks go to our youngster mountaineering Guide Santosh and Günther Härter from TopMountainTours.de to organize this expedition !
Changthang | Ladakh Cold Desert
The role of species in a cold desert such as Ladakh's Changthang is unique. In fact life here depends on the intricate chain that links rare species together providing ecosystem services that have not been hitherto computed.
In an area of strife and struggle, loss of an endemic species will manifest in a rupture of the web of life.

Summer Life in Changthang, Ladakh | Living with the Changpas | Episode #6
Summer is the time of plenty in Changthang. The grass is abundant, thanks to last years snowfall. The animals are plump and healthy having gorged themselves on this plentiful grass. The Changpas, as usual, keep themselves busy by tending to their animals.
Life is not as hard as during the winter months, but there is still a lot to do during the summer and autumn months in Changthang.
