Cerro Catedral to Chapelco- Worth the Drive? Argentina Ski/Snowboard VLOG
We ended our Argentina ski and snowboard trip by driving from Bariloche to San Martin de los Andes so that we could hit the slopes at Cerro Chapelco for two days. The drive is normally three hours, but it took us over four due to road closures. If you prefer, you can fly to the area from Buenos Aires, as there is an airport in the area.
Cerro Chapelco is a modern resort. It is much smaller than Cerro Catedral, but worth the trip if you visit Patagonia for a week or more. Lift lines tended to get a bit long, however. Unfortunately, we did not experience the entire mountain because it was cloudy both days, so the summit had poor visibility. In any event, the skiing was great and we are glad we went.
We preferred San Martin de los Andes to Bariloche. It is smaller and more quaint. There are hotels in the main town but we stayed at a hostel on the top of a nearby mountain. There is also a winery on the approximately 20 minute drive to Cerro Chapelco, as well as an interesting historical park down by the lake.

EMPANADA RANKINGS:
Best Overall: Punta Princesa, on the mountain at Cerro Catedral. These were chicken empanadas.
Beef Empanada Rankings:
1) Minga - Palermo, Buenos Aires. Perfect, in our view. Well-seasoned, and juicy. We had multiple orders even though we were not that hungry.
2) Nonino Empanadas - San Martin de los Andes. This sit-down restaurant had the best variety of empanadas that we saw, though we did not like chicken empanada at all.
3) Don Julio - Palermo, Buenos Aires. These empanadas were delicious and contained sauce, which we did not see among the other empanadas that we tried.
4) Galeria Del Sol (ground floor) - Bariloche. Unfortunately, we do not remember the name of the vendor in the food court, but the empanadas were fresh and very tasty. The best we found in the town of Bariloche.
5) Las 10 Empanadas - Bariloche. These seemed promising, as they only make empanadas, but the empanadas did not have as much flavor as we would have liked. They were also a but dry.
6) El Filo Cafe-Bar - Cerro Cetedral, base of the mountain food court/shopping mall. These empanadas tasted like plain ground beef in a bread blanket. Looked like it too.
OUR ADVENTURE IN PATAGONIA CONTINUES! Long Overnight Bus Ride From Trelew to Esquel, Argentina
Come join us as our adventure in Patagonia continues crossing from east to west as take a long overnight bus from Trelew to Esquel, Chubut, Argentina. Because our overnight bus didn't leave until the evening we arranged to keep our bags in Trelew while we headed over to Gaiman on a day-trip.
Before leaving Trelew we give you a full tour of our spacious apartment which we really enjoyed aside from the slow internet. After grabbing our bags we head to a cafe for a small snack before boarding the overnight bus.
The journey itself was quite bumpy for certain stretches and we arrived in Esquel feeling really groggy. After some coffee and breakfast we jumped in a cab and headed to our apartment in Esquel.
With a quick grocery tour and a friendly cat, which was comfortable enough to come inside, we say goodbye with more episodes from Esquel coming out soon.

OUR ADVENTURE IN PATAGONIA CONTINUES! Long Overnight Bus Ride From Trelew to Esquel, Argentina:
Hey guys! We are Samuel and Audrey, a travel vlogging couple from Canada. In this travel channel we share our travel and food vlogs while touring the world.
We had the privilege of traveling around Argentina for nearly 3 months from January- April 2019 on a trip covering a large section of the country.
We kicked things off with several days in Buenos Aires where we were joined by Audrey's parents eating and sightseeing around some of our favourite neighbourhoods in the city. We then flew from Buenos Aires to Cordoba where we spent a couple of weeks in the Sierras of Cordoba visiting both La Cumbrecita and Villa General Belgrano with highlights including hiking and delicious German and Swiss cuisine.
From Cordoba, we then travelled a considerable distance on an overnight bus to Mar Del Plata just in time for a special food festival called Feria Masticar featuring the best of Argentine food and wine. We spent several days enjoying beaches and seafood before heading south to Patagonia to visit the province of Chubut.
While on the Atlantic side of Chubut we visited Puerto Madryn, Peninsula Valdes, Trelew, Gaiman and Dolavon. To summarize our time in this area, we had incredibly close encounters with wildlife including penguins, sea lions and guanacos while also experiencing Welsh culture in Argentina.
Our time in Patagonia continued as we headed from east to west trading more barren landscapes for thick forests, impressive mountains and magnificent lakes. We spent significant time in both Esquel and El Bolson with day trips to visit Trevelin, Parque Nacional Los Alerces, Cholila and Lago Puelo. Highlights included sailing, hiking, riding vintage trains and partaking in the national asado festival.
We finished visiting Patagonia with time spent in Villa La Angostura, San Martin De Los Andes and Bariloche where we enjoyed more stunning scenery and hiking. On our way back to Buenos Aires, we took the Tren Patagonia to Las Grutas before meeting up with Audrey's dad again.
To finish off our trip in Argentina, we spent more time in the capital and later Mendoza where we got to experience wine tourism to its fullest extent. Overall, we had an amazing time travelling around Argentina having only scratched the surface of this vast and diverse country.
Overall our Argentina travel series explores cities, small towns that are off-the-beaten-path, and scenic attractions with a strong emphasis on Argentina cuisine and local culture.

Climbing Volcán Lanín in Patagonia, Argentina, near San Martin de los Andes
Climbing Lanín Volcano (Volcán Lanín) in San Martin de los Andes, Argentina, was an epic 30th birthday gift for Alex!
In addition to the climb, I wanted to cover the legendary driving route, Road of the Seven Lakes (Ruta de los Siete Lagos). Beginning in Bariloche, we drove through Villa La Angostura to San Martin de los Andes.
From San Martin de los Andes, we linked up with our tour operator, Andestrack. We headed to the Lanín National Park (Parque Nacional Lanín) in Argentina for the two days, one night trek. Yes, in the middle of winter in July.
Getting There:
We grabbed a rental car (book in advance) in Bariloche and drove along Ruta 234 through Neuquén Province. The drive was incredibly beautiful. There are many lookout points along the journey with gorgeous vistas.
After arriving in Villa La Angostura, we did a 30-minute round-trip hike to a lookout point in Los Arrayanes National Park. From there, we could see the infamous Inalco House. This house is the alleged home of Hitler after WWII, according to conspiracy theories. We had a quick bite in the Café Antibes before driving on to San Martin de los Andes, our home base for hiking Lanín Volcano.
San Martin de los Andes:
It's a charming ski town near the base of Cerro Chapelco. We booked a quaint little Casita Del Lago from Airbnb, hosted by the sweet and English-speaking Maria. We stopped into Andestrack where the owner, Julian (also, English-speaking), helped gear us up for our expedition to Lanín Volcano.
Andestrack provided the crampons, avalanche gear, ice axe, helmets, headlamps, as well as all food. They helped us find winter boot rentals. All we brought were our 50 and 65-liter backpacks full of clothes, our sleeping bags, sleeping mats, and water. Typically, winter treks are not allowed, but it had been unseasonably warm and they made sure we were very fit. Our guide, Ricardo, gave us the green light.
Day 1:
We met Ricardo at 7:30 AM for the one hour drive to the ranger station at the base of Lanín National Park. After signing in and distributing the food and gear amongst our three packs, we hit the trails. We weaved along snowshoe trails in the forest until arriving at the base. It was cloudy so we couldn't see the summit. We then continued to trek upwards, avoiding fresh avalanche routes and switchbacking the steep, snowy slopes.
In 5 hours, we reached the halfway point and permanent refugio, our home for the night. The refugio is above the clouds and gave us stellar views of the surrounding mountains and volcanoes in both Chile and Argentina. Here, I surprised Alex with a big slice of birthday cake!
Day 2:
Ricardo, our guide, woke us up at 4:45 AM to have a small breakfast. We packed our backpacks, leaving most of our clothes in the refugio to retrieve later. We set out in the dark, led by our headlamps, and headed straight up.
Around 8:30 AM, the sun started peeking out for the most spectacular sunrise we had ever seen. The trail was steep and windy. It was hard work and cold. After a rough 7 hours of hiking, including stops to eat at Refugio Caja and breaks to catch our breath, we summited. The last two hours to the top were painfully challenging.
Our ascent up Lanín Volcano was steep, and the snow was unforgiving. We had our crampons on all day already, but now we tethered ourselves together with rope and harnesses. We saw winds of up to 80 km/hour and were getting tossed from side to side.
We reached the summit of Lanín Volcano around 2:00 PM. After a few photos on the very windy top, we began our descent down. After collecting our items at the refugio at the halfway point, we continued to the base. Ricardo made it fun by giving us some fabric to make a sled with! We slid down a large portion of the mountain on our butts. That was a fun surprise.
By the time we got to the car, the sun had set, and it had taken us nearly 13 hours. We were sore but happy and accomplished. It was a fantastic way to spend Alex's birthday!
To get the most out of this adventure, get your butt in shape. It will be much more fun. Use our free program, specifically for this climb:
Two more favorite adventures of ours in Bariloche were hiking from Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi to Refugio Frey (2-4 hours depending on conditions). And, backcountry skiing at Mallín Alto:

Bariloche in Argentina is located at the northern end of the region Patagonia and serves as the perfect gateway to start our adventure. Surrounded by lakes and situated close to the Andes you can go for big variety of activities. While it is one of the largest ski ressorts in South America in winter it turns into a hikers paradise in summer.
Rather than hanging out in the city itself we used it as a base to drive around the 7 lakes, hike & camp to the Tronador and climbed our way up to Frey, Cerro Campanario and Catedral. With this we can give you a bigger picture of the area and you can easily use this video as a Bariloche Guide for your own trip!
This part of the trip was executed within 1,5 weeks by using the local buses and a well planned itinerary after we flew in from Buenos Aries - following I list all the places we visited & Things to do in Bariloche:
- Chocolateria Rapa Nui
- Cerro Campanario
- San Martin de los Andes
- Circuito de los 7 Lagos
- Villa La Angostura
- Center of Bariloche
- Villa Catedral
- Cerro Catedral
- Refugio Frey
- Refugio Otto Meiling
- Cerro Tronador
- Pampa Linda
- Glaciar Castaño Overo
I'm excited to share all our experiences in Patagonia over the course of the next 8 weeks with you. In the next episodes we will Hitchhike the Carretera Austral, trek through the most impressive mountain ranges, ice hike over the glaciers of the southern Patagonian Icefield and meet impressive characters along the way.
The Patagonian Expedition is a 95% self funded video documentary project following my trip in 2012/2013. Our aim is to show you the beauty of the rather unknown parts in Patagonia alongside with the famous spots.
Beside beautiful landscape you can expect loads of information and our personal experiences and struggles along the way.
