Wanaka Helicopters - Wanaka to Mount Roy
Well, lots of 'firsts' here..my first time to fly an R44, first time to land on a mountain and the first time to fly a Heli 'in command' in over 5 years as well as the first time for me to fly in New Zealand. This is a quick edit of the footage filmed by the passenger using my Canon 60D. The video ends with us entering an Autorotation..stay tuned for the 'HelmetCAM' edit with the full Autorotation and more...thanks to Wanaka Helicopters and 鈴木 昭子 for filming the onboard footage. The snow capped mountain is Mount Aspiring.

They got epic hiking trails!
Lake Wanaka has many trails on surrounding mountains that you can hike to find stunning view of the lake. Be sure to head for Roy’s Peak as they’re also one of most photographed natural attraction.
I’d suggest you to take the Rocky Mountain Track as it’s only 20 minutes away from the town. It’s a 7-kilometer track that would take you to the Rocky Mountain Summit and back. The track is maintained by New Zealand’s Department of Conservation, and they estimate that the whole hike should take about three hours. Ironic that it’s listed as an easy hike, but it’s filled with climbing up a waterfall and leaping over a river full of sharks. I think it should be an intermediate hike. Nonetheless, it’s still an epic hike to do.
Roys Peak | Wanaka | New Zealand
Roys peak lies 1576m above the sea level and is 16km long. It will take total 6 hours via same track but it took us more than 8 hours.???? For some friends in our group, it was their first time doing a long hike. Despite it, they managed to reach the summit of Roys. It is 68km from Queenstown and 6km from wanaka. The view from above is spectacular. We experience shifting scenery from the parking space until we reach the summit. Not to mention the foot traffic was less too. Don't get discouraged of the zig-zag walkway, once you reach to the viewpoint or summit the landscape of wanaka won't disappoint you. It should definitely be on everyone's bucket list if travelling to Wanaka or Queenstown New Zealand.
Best time to do it:
If you are an early bird hike to see a sunrise.
Or reasonably around 7 am to escape the heat as there are no trees to provide shades.

First NZ hunting adventure
A few days in the New Zealand mountains learning to hunt with my Weatherby Vanguard - steep slopes, cozy huts and beautiful scenery. We spotted a chamois on the mountain side, but it was a little camera shy... Or more like I should have brought a camera with at least some zoom capability.
Bush fire wipes out Wanaka hill... View from - Mt Iron | Wanaka | NZ
Mt Iron offers stunning views over Wanaka town and Lake Wanaka, and is an easy 1 hour return walk. It's 5 mins drive from the centre of town, and has toilets and (limited) car parking at the bottom. On 3rd January 2018, a nearby hill area was scorched in a bush fire - here I 'report' on the occurrence (yesterday) for a bit of fun. In an update, the fire was contained after 40 firefighters and 8 helicopters worked on it for two days, and no-one was hurt.
