Bariloche in Argentina is located at the northern end of the region Patagonia and serves as the perfect gateway to start our adventure. Surrounded by lakes and situated close to the Andes you can go for big variety of activities. While it is one of the largest ski ressorts in South America in winter it turns into a hikers paradise in summer.
Rather than hanging out in the city itself we used it as a base to drive around the 7 lakes, hike & camp to the Tronador and climbed our way up to Frey, Cerro Campanario and Catedral. With this we can give you a bigger picture of the area and you can easily use this video as a Bariloche Guide for your own trip!
This part of the trip was executed within 1,5 weeks by using the local buses and a well planned itinerary after we flew in from Buenos Aries - following I list all the places we visited & Things to do in Bariloche:
- Chocolateria Rapa Nui
- Cerro Campanario
- San Martin de los Andes
- Circuito de los 7 Lagos
- Villa La Angostura
- Center of Bariloche
- Villa Catedral
- Cerro Catedral
- Refugio Frey
- Refugio Otto Meiling
- Cerro Tronador
- Pampa Linda
- Glaciar Castaño Overo
I'm excited to share all our experiences in Patagonia over the course of the next 8 weeks with you. In the next episodes we will Hitchhike the Carretera Austral, trek through the most impressive mountain ranges, ice hike over the glaciers of the southern Patagonian Icefield and meet impressive characters along the way.
The Patagonian Expedition is a 95% self funded video documentary project following my trip in 2012/2013. Our aim is to show you the beauty of the rather unknown parts in Patagonia alongside with the famous spots.
Beside beautiful landscape you can expect loads of information and our personal experiences and struggles along the way.

Bariloche Circuido Chico with stop in Patagonia Cerveceria
t is almost compulsory that the first excursion done in Bariloche be the famous Circuito Chico, not only because it shows the most representative places in the mountain range scenery, but also because visitors may see and fall in love with this city in just half a day.
8 kilometers ahead, opposite Huemul Island, lies a beach called Bonita. Farther ahead, Serena Bay is reached, a small bathing resort with a boat ramp.
At the 17th kilometer marker, stands the base of Mount Campanario, which reaches 1,050 meters of height and whose summit may be accessed through a chairlift.
Passing by the San Pedro Peninsula, the itinerary continues towards the Llao Llao Peninsula. At the 24th kilometer marker, the San Eduardo Chapel, Puerto Pañuelo and the Llao Llao Hotel may be spotted. Totally refurbished and with all its facilities open, the classical hotel is one of the best known postcards in Bariloche, with panoramic sights of the national park and Lakes Perito Moreno and Nahuel Huapi.
The Llao Llao Municipal Park protects forests of coihues and cañas colihues, as well as creepers, bushes and other trees, which may be seen when hiking along its trails.
After passing by Villa Tacul and Lake Escondido, the joint between Lakes Nahuel Huapi and Perito Moreno is reached. This is crossed by Bridge Angostura, over the river bearing the same name. This is the ideal spot to have a break and go down to the rocky beaches of both lakes, lying 150 meters from one another.
The circuit also shows the mountaineer’s cemetery, the Swiss hamlet and, finally, the panoramic or vantage point over Lake Moreno, at the 40th kilometer marker.
The way back begins at El Trébol Lagoon and continues to the joint with Bustillo Avenue, which leads back to the city center.
Thus, traveling along just 60 kilometers, visitors may admire lakes, mountains and native forests of singular beauty.

The best things to do in Bariloche, Argentina go beyond skiing. The city has a wealth of activities for you to enjoy during summer and winter. It is also worth nothing that Bariloche attractions are an eyeful. Set in the Nahuel Huapi National Park on the foothills of Andes Mountains near the Nahuel Huapi Lake, you couldn't help but fall in love with the stunning scenery surrounding San Carlos de Bariloche.
Bariloche is one of the most popular Argentina attractions. It earned its reputation as a premier skiing destination. During your trip there, you can still take part in other adventures in Bariloche.
Best Things To Do In Bariloche During Summer
Going hiking is one of the most commonly enjoyed summertime activities and adventures in Bariloche. You can take a professional tour guide with you as you go hiking in Bariloche, or you can go alone or with your friends.
Bariloche guided hiking tours are offered at the Nahuel Huapi National Park. Guided bilingual hikes of Maxi Schoffel, a mountain within the park, is also offered to guests. Other Bariloche hiking trails are in Cerro Catedral, Cerro Campanario, Cerro Frey, Cerro López, Cerro Otto, Cerro Tronador, and Circuito Chico. Each of these trails has a different degree of difficulty and a unique view.
Cerro Catedral is where you'll find the largest ski center in South America. The mountain also has a hiking trail leading to Frey refugio. Cerro Campanario has great views of lakes and mountains that surround it. Cerro Frey is one of the most popular and beautiful hiking destinations in Bariloche. It takes a day or two to complete the trek. Cerro López is open for hiking in the late spring, early autumn, and the whole of summer. The hike to the mountain shelter in Cerro López is admittedly tiring but will reward you with impressive views. Hiking Cerro Tronador is even more rewarding as you get to see many of natural attractions in Bariloche. This includes the black glacier and Saltillo de las Nalcas, a waterfall that pours over an overhanging cliff. And finally, there is the 60-km Circuito Chico.
One of the top things to do in Bariloche during summer is biking. It is a popular activity enjoyed by biking enthusiasts and professionals alike. You can take a mountain bike to some of the Bariloche's hiking trails such as Cerro Otto and Circuito Chico.
The Alpine slide in this video is typically undermined and yet it is one of the most fun things to do in Bariloche. It is also called a Toboggan. The Toboggan slide involves riding a plastic sled (with breaks) down a winding cement track. The Toboggan ride starts at the peak of Cerro Viejo and runs all the way down to the bottom of the hill. For other Bariloche summer adventures besides the Alpine slide, biking, and hiking, check out the list below.
1. Boat excursions to Bosque Arrayanes and Puerto Blest
2. Cruising in Lake Nahuel Huapi
3. Rafting in Rio Limay or Rio Manso
4. Kayaking in Gutierrez Lake
5. Paragliding in Cerro Otto or Cerro Catedral
6. Horseriding at the Nahuel Huapi National Park
7. Historic steam train ride at the 1912 railway
8. Climbing the granite agujas in Cerro Frey
Best Things To Do In Bariloche During Winter
The most popular Bariloche adventure fit for winter is skiing. You can go skiing in Cerro Catedral during winter. But you can do other things and take advantage of alternative winter activities in Bariloche. For example, when the lake in Cerro Frey freezes during winter, you can skate on top of it. During winter, snowboarding is also one of the top things to do in Bariloche. Cerro Catedral is a great venue for snowboarding.

The mountains Tronador, Cerro Catedral and Cerro López are there for you to explore and enjoy. You can set out on various trekking circuits in Bariloche. The most popular ones are the Small Circuit, Puerto Blest, Puerto Pañuelo, Mount Tronador and Los Alerces Cascade. San Carlos de Bariloche is the spot for the adventurous traveler. With the majestic Andes in the background the city is a true haven to set out on rafting, hiking, mountain biking, horse-riding and fly fishing excursions. The season to be in Bariloche though is in winter when ski addicts flock to Cerro Catedral, one of the most important ski resorts in South America, to show off their ski and snowboard abilities. The first settlers in the area were Austrian and German immigrants in 1895 and on May 3, 1902, San Carlos de Bariloche was officially founded. The city has the look and feel of an alpine town.

Futaleufú River in Chile | 4K | Drone | Epic Landscape | Timelapse | Beautiful Lakes | Climbing
Futaleufú is a Chilean town and commune located in Northern Patagonia, specifically in Palena Province, Los Lagos Region. Futaleufu is a frontier town with a small but growing tourism industry based on adventure tourism—most specifically whitewater rafting—but also fishing, mountain biking, trekking, and canyoning. Located 7 miles from the Argentinian border, Futaleufu is most easily accessed from airports in Esquel and Bariloche, Argentina. The town is named after the crystal blue Futaleufú River, widely considered to be one of the best whitewater rafting rivers in the world. The name Futaleufu derives from a Mapudungun word meaning Big River.
The town has a population of about 2,000. The main income for the community is fly fishing and outdoor sports, particularly white water rafting, together with forestry and cattle farming. A gravel road links the town to Trevelin in Argentina and to the Carretera Austral. It is served by Futaleufú Airfield.
Following the eruption of Chaitén Volcano and the subsequent destruction of Chaitén, Futaleufú has been the administrative capital of Palena Province since March 2009.
The Futaleufú River is commonly rated by specialized media as one of the best rivers in the world for kayaking and rafting. The river flows in from Argentina, through the town, and empties into the fjord-shaped Yelcho Lake. Day trips and multi-day trips are available on the Futa while several of its tributaries, such as the Espolón River and the Azul (Blue) River, can be rafted, canoed, or navigated by boat.
Two lakes, Lake Lonconao and Lake Espolón, offer opportunities for paddling and fly fishing close to the town of Futaleufú. Fly fishing is also possible on the Futaleufú River, the Yelcho River (the largest river in the Futaleufú Valley) and Espolon River, which is the largest tributary of the Futaleufú and contains brown trout and rainbow trout, as well as salmon in April and May.
Other nearby attractions include the Futaleufú National Reserve, known for its population of Huemul (South Andean deer), and Pumalín Park, Chile's largest private nature reserve. Pumalín is a public-access park, with an extensive infrastructure of trails, campgrounds, and visitor centres.
Canyoning and rappelling is also possible in the Futaleufú valley, with its numerous ravines and waterfalls, as well as horse riding and mountain biking.
Cerro Catedral, Bariloche, Argentina
Cerro Catedral is a moutain range that shelters a ski station with same name, located on Nahuel Huapi National Park and distant only 12 miles from city center of San Carlos de Bariloche.
The name Catedral (cathedral in spanish) comes from sharpening rocky formations that populate the south part of the moutain, whose conic shapes remember cathedrals.
Cerro Catedral is the biggest south america ski station and one of the most antiques, whose construction was initiated in 1936. The winter station is internationally known by argentinians, chileans, brazilians, americans and europeans. Skiers and snowboarders from all around are attracted to Bariloche due to its fame.
The city is surrounded by the Andean mountains and washed by the lake Nahuel Huapi. It´s a pitoresque city, with many restaurants and good night life.
Line buses and other transport media leave the town to the ski station hourly. Thus, it´s easy to go to Cerro Catedral.
The snow is not always of the best quality given the proximity to the lake. Views from the highest mountains are terrific. Weather is unpredictable and mutant.
There are lots of pistes for all levels. The ski stations tends to be full of tourists, including those who doesn´t practice the winter sport.
To visit Cerro Catedral in low seasin is better than high ones, as queues to lifts are long.
Visiting Cerro Catedral in low season is better because queues to lifts are long in high seasons.
It´s good experience to be in Bariloche, specially if you are lucky to get a good season with good weather and good snow.
San Carlos de Bariloche belongs to Rio Negro State and is part of argentinian Patagonia.
