South Africa 2015: Adventures With Elephants
About 60km out of Bela Bela on the Thabazimbi Road is Adventures with Elephants Centre. This conservation and education centre is managed by Zimbabwean, Sean Hensman (conservationist extraordinaire) whose family has lived and worked with the African elephant since 1988. The hands-on interactions with these magnificent pachyderms is truly wonderful and the whole experience is an invitation into the elephant’s world where you can learn more about elephant in a unique manner whilst witnessing the elephant’s intelligence, compassionate nature and sheer delight in interacting with their human companions.
The experienced and qualified elephant handlers readily share their in-depth knowledge and passion for their charges with humour at the forefront! The elephant’s memory is truly extraordinary. Just given a ‘treat’ and hearing their names spoken just twice, an elephant can easily select a person by name to give an item to even when turned around and the three humans are ‘shuffled’. It is believed that the elephant will recall the name up to a year hence. In addition to the elephant antics, the centre had a lone Meerkat called ‘Trouble’ who happily ‘chirped his way round everyone’s feet and grovelled in the dust for insects and tit bits. Apparently his buddy died last year – could this one have been called ‘Strife’? Also roaming freely were three rather large female ostriches. I quickly named them the ‘Three Witches’ and if you have ever had the privilege to watch ostriches nosing around inquisitively, you’ll know what I mean!
This was a wonderful experience and we all learnt so much more about pachyderm’s anatomy, intelligence, training, as well as being allowed to explore the elephant from trunk tip to tail tip and everything in between!

Adventures with Elephants
Interacting with elephants at Bela Bela's Adventures with elephants tours. An absolutely incredible experience and a chance to get hands on with these incredible animals.
Adventures with Elephants
There are so many bad reports about the growing use of elephants as public exhibits, the brutal training methods and the babies taken away from their families for the elephant-back riding industry. and this made me reluctant to visit “Adventures with Elephants” in Bela-Bela, South Africa. After reading some amazing reviews, I decided to go and take a careful look for myself. I was on the lookout for any signs of elephant discomfort or anxiety, and signs of irritation or bullying from the handlers.
Adventures with Elephants
Adventures with Elephants is situated in Bela Bela, South Africa and is a unique elephant interaction programme, here are some of my images from my experience, check out my website for more of my photography. Further check out for more information on Adventures with Elephants.

Gorah Elephant Camp South Africa - Africa Travel Channel
The Gorah Elephant Camp is not just another bush camp, this is a place which sings the African spirit, the dream of romance, love, memory, secrets, of the stories of lives well-lived on African soil. This is a place where guests have felt that there is no time; that they have seen the Africa of their dreams; that they have felt an infinite touching of the divine spirit of nature with the essence of man. Summoning you closer to the secrets of untamed Africa, calling you into the heart of Africa, is the legendary old Gorah farmhouse, built in the early 1800s, charming and magical in its colonial splendour. The five star Relais and Châteaux property, which boasts an exquisite dining experience, is both stylish and comfortable, with Victorian furnishings and African touches, uniquely linking the human spirit to the spirit of the wild.
Simba and Bella: Together at last
After being relocated from Belgium to Africa, Simba is introduced to resident rescued lioness, Bella. Can the two of them provide each other with companionship that they deserve?
*UPDATE* Simba and Bella were eventually introduced to each other in June 2015 and now these two once-lonely lions have each other for company. Simba has had a vasectomy and Bella has a contraceptive implant (as we do not want another generation of lions born into captivity). We also need to keep space in our precious sanctuary so that more big cats are able to be rescued.

Amazing: Watch an Elephant Sniff for Bombs | National Geographic
At the Adventures with Elephants ranch in Bela Bela, South Africa, the U.S. Army is training captive elephants to sniff out traces of TNT. In one exercise, an elephant is rewarded after correctly identifying which of seven buckets contains a small amount of TNT. The Army is researching elephant sniffing ability with an ultimate goal of creating an artificial detector that can identify explosives from afar.

AN AFRICAN elephant detects dangerous TNT using its extraordinary sense of smell. Shot in November, this fascinating footage shows Chishuru, a 17-year-old male bull, carefully checking a row of white plastic buckets – one of which contains the explosive material. The huge animal raises its right leg to signal that he has found the tiny amount of TNT which is placed on a piece of filter paper. This amazing research is being carried out in Bela Bela in the Limpopo Province of South Africa by wildlife organisation Adventures with Elephants.
