Antelope Slot Canyon: A Visual Adventure
Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon in the American Southwest. It is located on Navajo land east of Page, Arizona. Antelope Canyon was formed by erosion of Navajo Sandstone, primarily due to flash flooding and secondarily due to other sub-aerial processes. Rainwater, especially during monsoon season, runs into the extensive basin above the slot canyon sections, picking up speed and sand as it rushes into the narrow passageways. Over time the passageways eroded away, making the corridors deeper and smoothing hard edges in such a way as to form characteristic 'flowing' shapes in the rock.[3]
Flooding in the canyon still occurs. A flood occurred on October 30, 2006, that lasted 36 hours, and caused the Tribal Park Authorities to close Lower Antelope Canyon for five months.

Antelope Canyon includes two separate, photogenic slot canyon sections, referred to individually as Upper Antelope Canyon or The Crack; and Lower Antelope Canyon or The Corkscrew.
The Navajo name for Upper Antelope Canyon is Tsé bighánílíní, which means the place where water runs through rocks. Lower Antelope Canyon is Hazdistazí (advertised as Hasdestwazi by the Navajo Parks and Recreation Department), or spiral rock arches. Both are located within the LeChee Chapter of the Navajo Nation.

MOST INSTAGRAMABLE AREA OF AMERICA? Monument Valley, Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon | USA Roadtrip
On our American RV roadtrip, we thought one of the most Instagrammable areas of America was Northern Arizona! Places like Monument Valley, Horseshoe Bend, and Antelope Canyon are some of the most beautiful places in the United States. We also realized that pictures can't capture the full experience of what it's like being in a place, for better or for worse. :)

Walking Tour Through Upper Antelope Canyon | Travel Arizona

Antelope Canyon include two separate slot canyon sections - the Upper and the Lower. Within this video you will see us walk through the Upper Canyon, which is on Navajo land east of Page, Arizona.
The Navajo name for Upper Antelope Canyon is Tsé bighánílíní, which means 'the place where water runs through rocks', and the canyon is only accessible by guided tour. It cost us $40 per person to go on the tour and it was roughly about an hour in total - to us, it was well worth it!
Here is just one of the many tour guides you can find:
This video was filmed August 2016, the weather was great, not too and it was pretty breezy. We went during the afternoon, around 1/2PM.
You are split into small groups which are each led by their own tour guide. You must hop on a 4x4 truck with bench seats in the back and haul ass through this desert. (Make sure to bring a bandana to wear on your face as it can get dusty out there). As you'll see on the video, there are multiple cars driving to the Canyons at the same time, it feels like you're in Mad Max - WITNESS ME!!.
Yes, what everyone says is true - these tours can be crowded but we made the best of it and it wasn't suffocating! Please keep in mind that as you are going in, there will be other tours coming out, so just be courteous and step aside to let them through.
Our guide was phenomenal. He told us which settings we should use on our phones and cameras to take better pictures and videos. The sights are just as amazing as you would imagine and I cannot wait to go back and do the lower canyon one day in the future.

Antelope Canyon, Page, Arizona, United States, North America
Antelope Canyon is the most-visited and most-photographed slot canyon in the American Southwest. It is located on Navajo land near Page, Arizona. Lower Antelope Canyon is Hazdistazí or spiral rock arches. Both are located within the LeChee Chapter of the Navajo Nation. Over time the passageways are eroded away, making the corridors deeper and smoothing hard edges in such a way as to form characteristic 'flowing' shapes in the rock. Flooding in the canyon still occurs. A flood occurred on October 30, 2006 that lasted 36 hours, and caused the Tribal Park Authorities to close Lower Antelope Canyon for five months. Antelope Canyon is a popular location for photographers and sightseers, and a source of tourism business for the Navajo Nation. It has been accessible by permit only since 1997, when the Navajo Tribe made it a Navajo Tribal Park. Photography within the canyons is difficult due to the wide exposure range (often 10 EV or more) made by light reflecting off the canyon walls. Upper Antelope Canyon is called Tsé bighánílíní, the place where water runs through rocks by the Navajo. It is the most frequently visited by tourists, due to two considerations. First, its entrance and entire length are at ground level, requiring no climbing. Second, beams (shafts of direct sunlight radiating down from openings in the top of the canyon) are much more common in Upper than in Lower. Beams occur most often in the summer months, as they require the sun to be high in the sky. Winter colors are a little more muted like the photo displayed here. Summer months provide two types of lighting. Light beams start to peek into the canyon March 15 and disappear October 7 each year. Lower Antelope Canyon, called Hazdistazí, or spiral rock arches by the Navajo, is located a few kilometers away. Prior to the installation of metal stairways, visiting the canyon required climbing along pre-installed ladders in certain areas. Even following the installation of stairways, it is a more difficult hike than Upper Antelope it is longer, narrower in spots, and even footing is not available in all areas. At the end, the climb out requires several flights of stairs. Despite these limitations, Lower Antelope Canyon draws a considerable number of photographers, though casual sightseers are much less common there than in Upper. The lower canyon is in the shape of a V and shallower than the Upper Antelope. Lighting is better in the early hours and late afternoon. Antelope Canyon is visited exclusively through guided tours, in part because rains during monsoon season can quickly flood the canyon. Rain does not have to fall on or near the Antelope Canyon slots for flash floods to whip through, as rain falling dozens of miles away 'upstream' of the canyons can funnel into them with little prior notice. On August 12, 1997, eleven tourists, including seven from France, one from the United Kingdom, one from Sweden and two from the United States, were killed in Lower Antelope Canyon by a flash flood. Very little rain fell at the site that day, but an earlier thunderstorm had dumped a large amount of water into the canyon basin, seven miles upstream. The lone survivor of the flood was tour guide Francisco Poncho Quintana, who had prior swift-water training. At the time, the ladder system consisted of amateur-built wood ladders that were swept away by the flash flood. Today, ladder systems have been bolted in place, and deployable cargo nets are installed at the top of the canyon. At the fee booth, a NOAA Weather Radio from the National Weather Service and an alarm horn are stationed. The road to Antelope Canyon is gated by the Navajo Nation and entry is restricted to guided tours led by authorized tour guides. Tours can be purchased in nearby Page, and range from $30 to $80 per person, depending on the time of the day and length of the tour.

How To Visit Horseshoe Bend and Lower Antelope Canyon in Page, Arizona
We explored Horseshoe Bend and Lower Antelope Canyon of Page, Arizona in early September during Labor Day weekend. We started the day waking up early at 5:30 AM to see the sunrise at Horseshoe Bend and it was already packed! Waking up early will be worth it because the views are absolutely gorgeous! Even though it's a short walk to Horseshoe Bend, make sure to take water with you. The Arizona heat is brutal.
Next, we did our Lower Antelope Canyon tour. You can only see these slot canyons by going on a tour. We booked a tour with Dixie Ellis' Lower Antelope Canyon Tours weeks in advance and thoroughly enjoyed our tour. Our tour guide was extremely nice and even gave us tips on how to take the best photos. The slot canyons are incredible to say the least and we're so glad we made this trip to see this beautiful area.
We stayed at Hampton Inn & Suites, which was a perfect location in between Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon. Their prices are reasonable and we got a very spacious room:

Peekaboo Slot Canyon Tour- Kanab, Utah-Dreamland Safari Tours-Better than Antelope Canyon
Our Peekaboo Slot Canyon Tour visits a neat little slot just north of Kanab Utah which requires serious 4 wheeling to access. This is not the Peekaboo near Escalante. The beautiful orange bouncing light is fantastic for photography in the morning and afternoon. A great alternative to Antelope Canyon, but without the crowds.

Antelope Canyon, Page Arizona USA
We discovered another natural wonder.
When we arrived in Page Arizona we did not know what we would find here. The only activity we heard of was to visit Antelope Canyon. We did and were very glad we did. There is an upper canyon tour and a lower. Both are magnificent. I recommend that you take the 11:30 AM upper canyon photographer's tour since that is the best time, and the only way to get enough time and space to really enjoy it. You will have to make a reservation as they are booked out two months. The lower tour is best at 10:30 AM, is in small groups and leisurely. A must see.

ABOUT US
Welcome to Grand Adventure, a YouTube channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, nearly always filmed in stunning 4K.
We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and our dogs Zoe and Maggie are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds.
