The Closes Of The Royal Mile, Edinburgh, Scotland
Taking a look here at many of the 'closes' that run off to the north and south of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh old town. A close is the local term for an alleyway and while a close tends to be narrow, a wynd was designed to be wide enough for a horse and cart to pass through. The closes of the old town are a remnant from medieval times in Edinburgh and certainly worth exploring. In total, there are roughly 80 closes that run off the Royal Mile.
The honeycomb of historic closes and wynds also play host to some of Edinburgh old towns best stories, mysteries and secrets. Many of the city's most influential characters also once called these closes home. If you believe the superstitions and ghost stories, some are even believed to still lurk in those closes and wynds to this day.
The closes of the Royal MIle in Edinburgh have been witness to many famous and infamous events over the centuries. Many closes have a plaque near the entrance that explains some if its history to visitors.

The Real Mary Kings Close Private Tour 2013
Mary King's Close is an old Edinburgh close under buildings in the Old Town area of Edinburgh, Scotland. It took its name from one Mary King, daughter of advocate Alexander King, who in the 17th century had owned several properties within the close.The close was partially demolished and buried under the Royal Exchange, and later being closed to the public for many years, the complex became shrouded in myths and urban legends; tales of ghosts and murders, and myths of plague victims being walled up and left to die abounded
However, new research and archaeological evidence has revealed that the close actually consists of a number of closes which were originally narrow streets with tenement houses on either side, stretching up to seven stories high. Mary King's Close is now a commercial tourist attraction

The Main Sheriff Court In Edinburgh Scotland
Tour Scotland video of the main Sheriff Court on doors open day In Edinburgh. The office of sheriff dates from the early days of the Scottish monarchy. In days gone by one of the more powerful local lords in each county was appointed and the office became hereditary in his family. The legal cases which are heard within the Courts are dealt with by a Sheriff. A Sheriff is a Judge who is usually assigned to work in a specific Court, although some work as floating Sheriffs, who may work anywhere in Scotland. There are about a hundred and forty full-time Sheriffs in the various Courts and a number of part time Sheriffs. They are appointed on the recommendation of the Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland. The Courts are staffed by civil servants who are employed by the Scottish Court Service which is a public body, independent of the Scottish Government.

They are free to act in support of people's views, and do not have any other role besides helping you in your life choices.

One day it was pissing it down in Edinburgh. I was at the Advocate on Hunter's Square (my then watering hole of about 3 years!) when Emma decided to go and dance outside. I filmed it. The clips are short and rather crap but I like them because they are a snippet of a reminder of how things were. Things are very different now.

On appeal from the High Court of Justiciary
The issue in this case is whether the High Court erred in holding that the provisions of the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2009, which prevent the appellant, from relying on the reasonable belief defence are compatible with arts.6, 8 and 14 ECHR. As a 14 year old, the appellant was charged by the police with showing pornography, and indecently exposing himself, to some other children. He was not prosecuted. When aged 19 he was charged with engaging in sexual intercourse with a girl aged under 16, contrary to ss.28 and 30 of the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2009. He awaits trial on these charges. He is prevented from relying on the defence that he reasonably believed that the girl in question was 16 by s.39(2)(a)(i) of the 2009 Act, which provides that the defence is not available to a person who has previously been charged with a relevant sexual offence. The appellant challenged that provision as being incompatible with Convention rights under the ECHR, and therefore outside the powers of the Scottish Parliament. He relied on art.6, either on its own (in particular, the presumption of innocence) or together with art.14 (non-discrimination), and also on art.8 (private life). The High Court of Justiciary concluded that the provision was compatible with art.8, and that art.6 was not engaged, either on its own or in conjunction with art.14.
The Supreme Court unanimously allows AB’s appeal in relation to Article 8 and remits the proceedings to the High Court of Justiciary.
Old Photographs Colinton Edinburgh Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Colinton, Scottish Gaelic: Baile Cholgain, a suburb of Edinburgh. Colinton house was owned by Sir William Forbes, 6th Baronet of Monymusk and Pitsligo, born 5 April 1739, died 12 November 1806, who was a Scottish banker. He was known also as an improving landlord, philanthropist and writer. He was born in Edinburgh. His father Willam Forbes, heir to a Nova Scotia baronetcy, was an advocate. A friend of the family, Sir Francis Farquharson of Haughton, arranged with Messrs. Coutts, a prominent firm of bankers in Edinburgh, to admit Forbes as an apprentice, and he entered their service in 1754. It was run by the sons of John Coutts. The apprenticeship lasted four years, and then he was clerk in the counting house for two years more, at the end of which he was given a small share in the business as a partner. Forbes had become an authority on finance, and in 1783 he took part in preparing the revised Bankruptcy Act. William Pitt used to consult him, and adopted in 1790 some of his suggestions on the stamps on bills of exchange. In 1799 Pitt offered him an Irish peerage, which he declined. The 15th century Colinton Castle, in the grounds of what is now Merchiston Castle School, was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell during his invasion of Scotland. Following repair, the castle was subsequently partially demolished by the artist Alexander Nasmyth in order to create a picturesque ruin. Spylaw Park in Colinton was bought by the City of Edinburgh Council in 1911. Robert Louis Stevenson spent the summers of his childhood at the manse in Colinton when his grandfather was the village's Parish Minister; the philanthropist James Gillespie; and architects Sir Robert Rowand Anderson and John James Burnet, all lived in the village.
