Hiroshima
The American School in Japan bridges many cultures, with over 1,700 students from more than 50 countries. But by name and location, we connect two countries and two cultures, specifically—nations that waged war against each other in the 20th century. A war that ended when the United States and its allies detonated two nuclear bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Times have changed since that first and only use of nuclear weapons, yet the monuments of war and peace and legacies of that era endure. Visit Hiroshima today, as our seventh graders do, and there is a unanimous focus on peace.
The events of World War II are a core element of humanities curriculum worldwide, but seventh-graders at ASIJ can take advantage of opportunities to approach the subject in a more nuanced and tangible way. Exposing our students to the history of the war, first-hand stories of hibakusha—victims of the atomic bombings—and the message of peace has played an essential role in our seventh-grade curriculum during the lead-up to a three-day excursion to Hiroshima for over two decades now. Carole Nickle, the Middle School Associate Principal and several-time trip chaperone, expresses her thoughts on the excursion, “I am drawn to the Hiroshima trip because it offers the seventh-grade students so many unique and meaningful learning opportunities. While all of the middle school campus trips are special in their own way, Hiroshima is one of my favorites to join because the impact on students is immediate.”

Hiroshima Peace Park, and the Atomic Dome.
I like history. Seeing the Atomic Dome was something else, though. It's hard to imagine the chaos, death and destruction that occurred on August 6, 1945. It was emotional, dark, and very heavy. I couldn't even provide commentary for the film.

Then I decided to get back on the super Express and take it to Hiroshima to go to the Peace Memorial Park. I love how easy it is to travel from city to city in Japan.

Like all good things, my Japan trip has come to an end. Here are my last two days featuring THE GHIBLI MUSEUM, Tokyo Station, Golden Gai, Robot Restaurant, Ippudo and more!
Here's what went down:
Day 9: We took a look around Kappabashi a.k.a Kitchen Town. To our surprise, everything was literally kitchen utensils and tools! We kept exploring the area and noticed the Tokyo Sky Tree from afar and somehow ended up at Orange Street, which is really close to Sensoji Temple! After lunch at Ippudo, we went back to Akihabara (I know, I know) again so he could go on a shopping spree one last time. Time flew by and soon the sun was setting. We jumped on the train and headed to Tokyo Station. The station was HUGE and we got lost in there so many times. We went to first avenue inside the station and saw a lot of food shops, souvenir shops and a bunch of ramen restaurants. The restaurants there were pretty pricey though. We also got to explore Character Street where there was a Donguri store selling all things Ghibli! Starving, we decided it was time to leave so we quickly went across the street to Kitte Mall. The mall was gorgeous and quite fancy inside. We headed to the rooftop and got to take in the night view of the whole Tokyo station before heading back to Shinjuku for dinner.
Day 10: On our last day, we left the best for last: The Ghibli Museum! We got the tickets in advance because they sell out faster than hot cakes. We went there thinking that we wouldn't be able to get any footage or pictures of our magical experience since pictures are not allowed inside but there were plenty of interesting stuff to look at from the outside too! I loved how there were minute details on the walls, bricks, bathrooms, and even plants. Once we got inside, we traded our paper tickets for a film strip ticket. Later on, we were able to insert the film strips into a machine to project the image larger. First, we watched a short film in a very cozy and cute auditorium room. Then, we explored the other sections. I loved the room with all of the draft drawings of the Ghibli characters because I was really able to see how the process came about. But my ultimate favorite was definitely the huge cat bus. When I sat down, I literally sunk in it like in the movie! It was soo furry and soft. In a way I'm glad that pictures were not allowed inside because everybody would be hogging up the bus trying to take pictures! And I really appreciated just enjoying the experience and not worrying about capturing it all. They had a souvenir shop and a rooftop where the Robot from Castle in the Sky stood. It was SO TALL. After an amazing morning at the museum, we explored Isetan in Shinjuku. They have an amazing food court so we bought some delicacies from there for lunch. Then we decided to just linger around Shinjuku since we had to head back earlier to pack. We didn't expect Golden Gai to be so long but people weren't kidding when they said the restaurants are super small. Most places only fit five people and 10 maximum. During my time in Japan, I saw a lot of crepes with a slice of cheesecake inside but I never actually tried them so since it was my last chance to, I did! I was expecting it to be 10x better than a regular crepe but it was pretty average. At night, we passed by Shin Okubo and the fried chicken garlic was really tempting so we opted for Korean food instead of Japanese cuisine. I know, pretty dumb of us! But we got to eat one last Japanese meal at the airport the next day!
Thanks for tuning in and please subscribe for more delicious food videos and adventures!
