Three years after the tsunami, widower learns to dive so he can look for his missing wife
Almost three years after an earthquake and tsunami struck the northern Pacific coast of Japan, a widower is learning to dive so he can look for his missing wife.
Temperatures fell just below five degrees on Sunday morning as 57-year old Yasuo Takamatsu donned an orange and black wetsuit, adjusted his mask and braved the cold winter water.
He received his diving license in December, but is still struggling to keep his balance underwater.
On Sunday, dive instructor Masayoshi Takahashi focused on teaching Takamatsu how to position and stabilize his movements.
The two dived to a depth of nearly seven metres, spending a little more than one hour underwater over the course of two dives.
It'll take many more dives before Takamatsu will be experienced enough to take part in underwater searches, but Takamatsu said at it was a start.
More than 2,600 people are still missing from the tsunami and earthquake of March 2011 that killed more than 15,880 people.
His wife, Yuko, was at her office at a local bank when the earthquake struck at 14:46 local time.
At 15:21 she sent an email to Takamatsu reading: Are you ok? I want to go home.
That was the last email he received from her.
Of the 13 people who managed to escape onto the roof of the two-storey bank building that day, only one survived.
Of the remaining 12, four bodies have been found, while eight are still missing.
During the days following the earthquake, Takamatsu looked for Yuko at evacuation centres, hoping she'd still be alive.
He then searched the coastline for clues, but it wasn't until two months after the quake that he visited the mortuaries.
Though prefectural police and the coast guard continue regular searches for the missing, finding them remains a daunting task given the vast coastline.
Takamatsu asked the coast guard to search for his wife last autumn, but three searches have yielded no clues to her whereabouts.
Dive instructor Takahashi, along with a group of volunteer divers, have been searching underwater at least twice a month, looking for remains and personal belongings.
He said the group still finds belongings, and sometimes bones, during dives.
I think there's still a chance we could find something more, said Takahashi.
Takamatsu just wants to find something of his wife to bring him some peace.
Of course, I hope her body would show up� I suppose it would be her remains by now. I hope I could find something, even a small piece, he said.
