SHOPPING in AFGHANISTAN - The Afghan Market on the Pamir Highway
During our recent NOMADasaurus Pamir Highway Tour we spent the morning at the famous Afghan Bazaar in the town of Khorog, right on the border of Afghanistan and Tajikistan.
Every Saturday of the year the Afghan people travel from across the country to a number of small cross-border markets to sell their local products to people and traders from Central Asia. This isn't a tourist market, there are no tacky souvenirs or people trying to make a quick buck off of foreigners. It's an honest, legitimate bazaar for the local people.
The Afghanistan market on the Pamir Highway is one place that foreigners can safely visit and interact with real Afghanis, and it's an incredible experience. The people are very friendly and welcoming, and love having their photo taken as well. Our group managed to get some real amazing portrait pictures from here.
If you're looking for a very authentic experience when travelling the Pamir Highway, come down to the Afghan market in Khorog, Tajikistan.

Afghanistan and Tajikistan Cross Border trade project
VSO Tajikistan is implementing a project for the UK government conflict pool. With funding from DFID, FCO and MOD the conflict pool focuses on initiatives which aim to achieve enhanced peace and security within and between states and their populations in Central Asia. In line with the strategy of VSO Tajikistan this project focuses on improving cross-border trade and investment in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast of Tajikistan alongside the border with Afghanistan. The project partners are Free Economic Zone (FEZ) Ishkoshim and Milal-Inter. The project will work with FEZ Ishkoshim to attract international investment to the region and with Milal-Inter to improve the trading opportunities at cross-border markets in Khorog and Ishkoshim.

Khorog Bazaar and Kivekas Hotel - Tajikistan 4K Travel Channel
On entering Khorog, a series of buildings that communicate a sense of official character line the road. They are banks, schools, and administration buildings, partly from the government. We stay in the Kivekas Hotel which is in middle of the town, directly at the Gunt River, a tributary of the Panj river. A pedestrian bridge next to the hotel leads across the river. After 2 days mainly in the car, we enjoy an almost car-free day.
Today, a visit to the Khorog Bazaar is on our agenda. It's all pretty lively, as the bazaar offers all the items and food necessary for daily life. We especially like the colorful oriental fabrics and carpets. But also the variety of fruits, household goods, and jewelry make the visit interesting. People are friendly and you easily get into a conversation with them. Yet, mastering the Russian language would be very helpful.
Through the well-kept central park, we go to the Restaurant Chorbogh, which also lies at the riverbank. On the spacious terrace you can eat well and watch life on the river. Some daredevils climb into the water and drift downstream. This does not look harmless at all.
We meet a group of sports enthusiasts in the restaurant. The men in the green T-shirts are from South Tyrol. They are from Bike Lenin. They cycle 1000 km in 4 weeks and in addition, they climb a 7000 m high mountain, the Mount Lenin.
The other two with the gray T-shirts started in Berlin and cycled here together. One of them leaves for Kazakhstan in 5 months, the other in 6 months for China.
All these athletes have our deep respect for the performance they achieve.
During another small walk through the town, we arrive at a place which is full of busts of Tajik national heroes. On the opposite side is the State University, where our guide had studied.
After dark, Eithne, our Irish fellow traveler from Dubai, draws our attention to a poster that she discovered in the afternoon. It shows the model of an opera that is emerging here. Well, we're a bit surprised, because we would not have expected an opera here.

Although it was a very interesting experience, it all seems such a shame that stupid politics gets in the way of common sense. Especially as the Tajiks and Afghans share so much culturally. Taken on Saturday 20/August/2016.

STORYLINE:
Some eight thousand Russian soldiers guard the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan.
At the post near Kupletin, the soldiers have a bird's eye view of fighting between Taliban soldiers and those from the opposition Northern Alliance and often report on their activities.
The post is on the River Pyandz which forms a natural border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan.
The border troops say they've seen an increase in the fighting between the Taliban and the Northern Alliance troops in the past few days, since U-S airstrikes began on Afghanistan.
On Thursday they reported to a Russian news agency that they had seen tanks from the Northern Alliance shell Taliban positions near the village of Zardkamar.

????????Inside Tajikistan: The front line of the war on drugs | Al Jazeera English
Drug smuggling accounts for almost a third of Tajikistan’s economy, some international reports estimate.
The Central Asian country has been in the front line in the global war on illegal drugs as tonnes of heroin, opium and cannabis are smuggled from neighbouring Afghanistan every year.
Though Tajikistan claims to be in control of the situation, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), as well as the United States and European governments, accuse it of not doing enough.
Al Jazeera's Charles Stratford reports from the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border.

Badakhshan TV: UCA Students Host Model UN Conference in Khorog
UCA’s Model United Nations (MUN) conference brought together 120 participants from four regions of Tajikistan, as well as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Organised by UCA students at the Khorog campus from October 21-23, it aimed at educating young people in the arts of debate, negotiation, and public speaking by providing a forum in which they can hone their skills. Participants discussed the fascinating realities and complexities of international relations through a series of simulations of international organisations. The first MUN conference was held in 2018 at the Naryn campus.
The conference featured two guest lectures by Alif Khalfan, Vice President of Product Strategy at Disney on cybersecurity, and Fatima Kassam, Leaders International Forum Global Coordinator for Poverty Alleviation, who shared her previous experiences working with the UN’s World Food Programme in African countries.
“We organised this conference to start conversations about current issues facing our society and the world,” said Saif Ur Rahman, UCA student, and conference organiser. “Six committees covered a variety of economic social and cultural issues, and collectively, the conference participants came up with a set of possible solutions to problems that exist in our daily life,” continued Parvina Sultonmamadova, UCA student and organiser.

Getting close to Afghans at a Afghan/Tajik cross-border market
Some of the Afghans had drunk too much vodka. I don't know if that would give them a problem upon returning to Afghanistan. It's fair to say that their alcohol tolerance level is probably very low, simply because they're just not used to drinking it. Taken on Saturday 20/August/2016.
