We also discussed the humanitarian situation in the region and in that regard the president confirmed that the Freedom Bridge (also known as Friendship Bridge) would open tomorrow (9 December) after a last technical check on the part of his staff and this will ease the flow of humanitarian aid into Afghanistan and I thank the president for this decision and this announcement.

5. SOUNDBITE (Uzbek) Islam Karimov, Uzbek President
It is true that tomorrow, an Uzbek government commission will meet to decide the issue of opening the bridge. They will have to deal with issues of returning the bridge back to usage, setting up customs offices and creating the necessary infrastructure around the bridge. All this is necessary for reopening the bridge. I am of the same opinion as Secretary of State Powell that the reopening of the bridge is important, not only at an economical and humanitarian level, but first of all it carries an important political message.

STORYLINE
A bridge on the border between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan will reopen on Sunday, clearing the way for the distribution of humanitarian aid along that route.
The announcement was made by US Secretary of State Colin Powell and Uzbek President Islam Karimov in Tashkent on Saturday.
The Friendship Bridge (also known as Freedom Bridge) has been closed since 1996.
US officials have long awaited its reopening to speed up the delivery of food and medical supplies into northern Afghanistan, but until Saturday the opening had been delayed.
Powell said the opening would ease the flow of humanitarian aid, while his host said it would be very important from a political, economic and humanitarian standpoint.
After reaching an agreement on the Friendship Bridge in Uzbekistan the Secretary of State flew into Kazakhstan for a two-day official visit.
In the capital Astana, Powell will meet Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev and Foreign Minister Yerlan Idrisov.
Talks between the leaders will address issues of regional security, international terrorism and humanitarian aid for Afghanistan.

Almaty Kazakhstan. The Great Patriotic War Memorial
119. The monument to the Kazakhstan Soldiers
Many Kazakh men died in battles for the peaceful future of the country.
Their deeds will stay forever in the poems and songs. The monument is erected in honor of the Kazakhstan soldiers who died in Afghanistan and in other battle fields in the 28 Panfilov Guardians Park.
The natural relief of the park is used for this composition. There are two staircases from the two sides of the monument.
There are three soldiers with strict facial expression. They represent the image of strong fighters.
Their hard eyes, prominent cheekbones, compressed lips and clenched fists say about their firm characters.
The sculptor K.Satybaldin and architect V.Sidorov expresses in those sculptures the heroism, martial virtue and deep sorrow of the warriors.
The monument was installed in 2003 for the 14th anniversary of withdrawal of Soviet troops from the territory of Afghanistan.
There are names and surnames of 69 Almaty citizens who died in this war written on the monument. More than 22 thousand Kazakhstan men took part in the war at the territory of that country.

Bishkek-Kyrgyzstan
Bishkek is the capital of Kyrgyzstan, and has a population of about one million people. Bishkek is located in the Chuy Valley, at the northern edge of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too Range, at about 800 m (2,625 feet) above sea level.
The first mention of Bishkek was the fortress of Pishpek, constructed in 1825 by the Khanate of Kokand. Pishpek was built to protect caravan routes carrying goods between Tashkent and Lake Issyk-Kul, across the Chuy Valley. After a battle between Russian imperial troops and the Khanate of Kokand in 1860, the fort was destroyed and the area became the edge of the Russian Empire. In 1897, the population of Pishpek was a total of 6,600 people, and rather than being a city, was more like a dusty village of mud houses.
Under Soviet rule, the city developed rapidly. In 1925, Pishpek became the capital of the Kara-Kirghiz Autonomous Oblast, the precursor of today’s Kyrgyzstan. In 1926, Pishpek became Frunze, named after the revolutionary and military leader Mikhail Frunze, who was born there. Frunze can still be seen in the city’s airport code - FRU. In 1991, the city was renamed once again, to Bishkek. According to experts, “bishkek” is the stick used for churning mare’s milk for the traditional fermented drink, kumis.
Today, Bishkek is one of the major cities of Central Asia, and is the largest city in Kyrgyzstan. The population numbers over one million, with over 80 nationalities represented. The main language of international communication is Russian, but Kyrgyz and English are very widespread.
Sights Overview
There are several major museums in Bishkek, the most interesting of which are the Historical Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Frunze House Museum. Check out performances by the Opera and Ballet Theater, the Russian and Kyrgyz Drama Theaters, the Bishkek City Drama Theater, and the State Philharmonic. There are also a number of venues where pop musicians play, as well as art exhibitions, music festivals, and plenty of interesting events.
There are plenty of places that showcase Bishkek’s unique history. There are several monuments to Soviet architecture in the city center, including Ala-Too Square, the Historical Museum, Philharmonia, and several monuments, such as a Monument to the Red Guards and a Monument to the Martyrs of the Revolution. Check out other newer monuments to Manas, manaschy (those who recite the Epic of Manas), and to those killed by government violence in 2002 and 2010. Bishkek is also famous for being one of the greenest cities in Central Asia, with Oak Park, Erkindik Boulevard, and Panfilov Park being popular destinations in the summer.

Almaty-2 railway station:
Almaty-2 is one of the oldest train stations located in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The station serves around average attendance of about 5000 people. During the summer however, the capacity of people increases to 10,000. Located in the center of the city, it serves as the primary departure point for passengers in all directions, including internationally, which are mostly Russian cities such as Moscow, St. Petersburg and Ürümqi in China. Domestic destinations are Astana, Shymkent, Petropavlovsk, Atyrau, Zhezkazgan, Mangyshlak, and Uralsk.
During the first years of building the station, the construction site of the building was located on the Turksib Krasnogvardeysky tract in place of the furniture factory. After the suggestion of the engineer, Mukhamedzhan Tynyshpaev, the construction was moved to the street, Starokladbischenskuyu (now named Abylai Khan), where the old cemetery was located. The cemetery was removed and was replaced with a station square which in later years saw tram and trolleybus services. The area opened a new path for a new avenue of the capital of Kazakh SSR. Railway Station Square has its own little history. In 1954, the monument to Abay was installed to the square. Then in 1972, a monument to Kalinin was added; it was removed in 1992. Finally in 2000, a monument to Abylai Khan was installed that is still standing. Around the square, an area of residential and public buildings were built. Until 1941, the train station and station facilities were built to a standard project. During the beginning of World War II, the east side of the building was built. The sides of the buildings are semi-circular projection in the facade in terms of volumes with large window panes located in the entrance part of the building. The sculptural composition of male and female figures, symbolizing the success, industry, agriculture and the Soviet Union. Decorative objects were made by a Czech sculptor Bogomil Vahek exiled during Stalin years who lived in Almaty. All architects, engineers and designers of the station were eventually subsequently repressed and shot due to the effects of the Great Purge. In 1977, the building was reconstructed. With an addition construction of the west wing which included renovation of technology disorders, changing the interior and exterior of the building.
Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev and U.S. President Obama Discuss Current Nuclear State
Seoul, South Korea - March 26, 2012
Kazakhstan's President Nazarbayev and President Obama had a bilateral meeting to discuss the current nuclear state. Transcription below.
US President Obama: Well, it is wonderful to see, once again, President Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan, and I want to first of all congratulate him on his leadership for the issues that are going to be discussed over the next two days. Twenty years ago Kazahkshtan made a decision not to have nuclear weapons, and not only has that lead to growth and propertity in his own country, but he has been a model in efforts around the world to eliminate nuclear materials that could fall intwo the wrong hands, so I very much appreciate his leadership.
Translator: *translates US President Obama's words for Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev.
US President Obama: In fact, one of the major deliverables that will take place in this summer is a oustanding effort to deal with nuclear materials that were a carry over from the Soviet era, working with Russia, the United States, Kazakhstan has been able to secure those materials and that makes us all safer. I know that we'll have an opportunity during this bilaterial meeting, to also discuss some of the other efforts that Kazakhstan has made when it comes to highly enriched Uranium, Plutonium - their efforts at helping to develop an international fuel bank that can lessen the need for countries to pursue their own enrichment capabilities and so across the board, Kazakhstan has been a key leader on these issues and is appropriately going to be featured during the next two days of this nuclear security summit.
Translator: *translates US President Obama's words for Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev.
US President Obama: Of course, the relationship between our two countries extends beyond just the nuclear security issue, so this meeting will give us the opportunity to discuss the cooperation that we have built over the last several years with respect to Afghanistan and the help we've received in supplying our troops and helping to assist the Afghan government. We obviously have commercial ties as well, and we'll be discussiong how we can deepen those. I'll be interested in discussing with the President efforts to further expand democracy and human rights within Kazakhstan which will help to lead further growth and prosperity in the future. So - I very much appreciate his leadership, his efforts, and I look forward to continuing to strengthen the relationship between our two countries.
Translator: *translates US President Obama's words for Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev.
Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev: Well I'm very grateful for this opportunity to participate in this important summit. We are discussing a very crucial issue, nuclear security and I'm very grateful to you, Mister President for the invitation to participate in the Washington Summit, and now we are here to discuss a very important issue.
Translator: *translates Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev's words for US President Obama.
Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev: And Mister President, I support your call to all nations to struggle for a nuclear free world and we fully support the nuclear strategy of the United States and where you state that all the countries that support the non proliferation treaty will get the support of nuclear powers and will not be threatened by any nuclear state and I think that this is a very important goal for the future.
Translator: *translates Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev's words for US President Obama.
Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev: You discussed in the details that you report Kazakhstan 20 years ago was the first country to close its nuclear test site and we voluntarily renounced our nuclear arsenal. And you know very well that at that time, in the territory [unclear] bought 1,100 war heads where it were on the intercontinental [unclear].
Translator: *translates Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev's words for US President Obama.
Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev: And in the last years, we have worked closely - Russia, the United States, Kazakhstan - to demolish the infrastrucutre that was left over on the polygon and we did alot to reallocate [unclear] and the people of Kazakhstan who suffered a lot and who lost many a lives in that tragedy, they appreciate that effort very much.
Translator: *translates Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev's words for US President Obama.
Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev: And, we worked very closely with the United States and we have achieved a lot, worked jointly on many projects, about 20 billion US dollars have been invested into the Kazakhstan economy so far, and 80% of all foreign investments that were directed in Central Asia ended up in Kazakhstan, and I always show this collaboration as a very shining bright example of good collaboration...
