Кандагар/Kandahar
So melts the sky with the earth, and the lead-riddled snowstorm howls.
It is a ferocious February. The seventh day. In Kandahar.
In the defense intelligence regiment, there are just seventy-eight guys,
For them the order is to hold this airport!
Lt. Izvekob's purpose in life is to baptize Shuravi by fire,
Trust him, depend on him God.
He can swear obscenities in your face, and accept the costs of lead,
And in their orders they condemned him: Kandahar!
Intelligence has a special diction, that Allah is not akbar after all,
Therefore Kandahar will not pardon them.
Already a couple of wild attacks died down to a dull roar,
But in the rear, the aircraft take off.
Holding down the fort are ragtag commandos against several thousand guns,
And it's not necessary for orders to pen another word.
So the commander is pleased and proud that so far there is not a single loss,
That means Lioshka properly baptized the boys.
Maybe that’s commander’s reputation, the unofficial meaning of an officer's bravado,
So that striped-blue shirts should be only blue*
That he might shield the soldier's from the half open door to paradise
And to bring the detachment back to the base without losses.
Maybe it’s an officer’s privilege, to carry the weight of war on his shoulders,
Not to whine, and not be a hero, and keep your mouth shut,
About how the troops were given the command, “withdrawl” and you covered their departure,
And you were were the last to leave from there that February.
And then there will be a march to the Soviet Union, Khreshchatyk Street, and old Podol,
Where a father's home for a recon scout is both a liability and an asset.
And then with service credentials and orders, and a cruel mental breakdown,
Where hope will leave like a wife, but then that all will be later.
But for now just dig into concrete, and fill the bags full with sand.
What is reconnaisance in defense? Cannon fodder.
And so again, the observation post lets you know of the approach of the enemy,
And all but a week before the withdrawal of troops... Kandahar
Ukrainians commemorate compatriots killed in Soviet-Afghan war
It's been 28 years since the Soviet Army officially withdrew its troops from Afghanistan. Today President Petro Poroshenko was the first official to lay flowers to the Memorial of the warriors killed in the bloody Soviet-Afghan war.
Veterans of the conflict also joined the solemn ceremony in Kyiv.
The war lasted over nine years (since late 1979 till early 1989) and claimed lives of dozens of thousands of servicemen from the both sides. However civilians took much more serious casualties over the period - about 2 million of them perished.
Over 3000 Ukrainians were killed in action during the conflict. 72 warriors were awarded with the title of hero of the Soviet Union during the war, 11 of them are Ukrainian nationals.

OSCE on situation; Poroshenko; locals on ceasefire
Ukrainian officials attended a commemoration ceremony in Kiev on Sunday honouring soldiers killed during the Soviet war in Afghanistan.
The 1979-1989 war was part of the Cold War and was fought between Soviet-led Afghan forces and Islamic insurgent groups mostly supported by Pakistan and Iran.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, together with Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Kiev mayor Vitali Klitschko, all laid flowers by a monument to the soldiers who lost their lives during the war.
The head of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (SMM), Ertugrul Apakan, was also at the ceremony.
He later told reporters that the OSCE monitors were refused access to the eastern Ukrainian town of Debaltseve, where Ukrainian forces have for weeks been fending off severe onslaughts from pro-Russian rebels.
The denial of entry to the town, Apakan said, violated the ceasefire agreement signed by the warring side, which guaranteed the OSCE access to all territories in eastern Ukraine, where fighting took place.
Residents of Horlivka, the city in the eastern Ukraine that, in the last months, came under constant fire, welcomed the ceasefire.
People there could be seen mending broken windows and walking around chatting with neighbours.
