Africa Silks Craft Studio Graskop South Africa - Africa Travel Channel
Visit Africa Silks for a great shopping experience. At Africa Silks you will be amazed to see how the silkworm cocoons are processed into the most beautiful threads. These are then hand-woven to produce a variety of products for clothing and interior decorating. The silk farm near Bushbuckridge used to be part of our concern, but after the floods in 2000, the farm was sold. A new farm was then established between Graskop and Hazyview, and in November 2003 it was in production and ready to open it's doors for visitors and tours.

Africa Silks Weavery & Showroom

Silk is also found in World Acclaimed Hotel accommodation Venues all over the world. Made by the silk worm on the silk farm, situated between Graskop and Hoedspruit, woven by woman (and men) and sold to the public...
It is not only beautiful but the most remarkable fabric as well. Due to it being a protein product, it works with human body heat. Keeping it cool in Summer and hot in Winter. It is non-allergic, helps overcome tiredness, speeds up the metabolism of cells which reduces ageing of the skin!! And to top it all off... it has a lifetime guarantee!! SOUTH AFRICA: SILKWORM DEATHS RIDDLE SOLVED
Eng/Nat
Two young sleuths have solved a riddle of mysterious silkworm deaths in eastern South Africa.
Their investigation has prompted a major pharmaceutical company to withdraw a new pesticide from the market.
The two schoolchildren have now been invited by the company to participate in additional research into the product.
Timothy Fannin and Paula Young, both 13, are keen amateur naturalists.
They became concerned when they discovered that the silkworms they and their friends kept as pets were dying for no apparent reason.
The pair approached a local wildlife club for help and within weeks word of the problem had spread.
Timothy and Paul got a telephone call from a university expert who said the silkworms were probably being affected by a new pesticide, AWARE, manufactured by the Swiss company Ciba-Geigy.
SOUNDBITE:
We were sitting at a meeting of the wildlife club one day and then someone mentioned their worms were dying and then we realised a couple of other people in the wildlife club...so we started asking around the school and most of the people who had worms, their worms were also dying.
SUPER CAPTION: Timothy Fannin.
Told of the suspected problem, Ciba-Geigy sent scientists to investigate areas where its pesticide was used.
Last week, Ciba-Geigy representative Max Frischknecht flew from Zurich to meet Paula and Timothy.
He told them AWARE would be withdrawn until further tests were conducted.
SOUNDBITE:
We were very surprised. We didn't think that they would send someone all the way from Switzerland just to, on the matter of silkworms. But after a while we realised it was quite a big thing we had started.
SUPER CAPTION: Paula Young
Frischknecht defended the company's product which he said was a new kind of pesticide which did minimal damage to the environment.
But he said the young naturalists had alerted the company to a hazard which it had been overlooked.
SOUNDBITE:
The kids obviously, they did a terrific job. They followed up what happened very precisely. They made good precise observations.
SUPER CAPTION: Max Frischknecht - Ciba-Geigy
SOUNDBITE:
We were very glad that Ciba-Geigy went along with us. They were not, they told us what they thought of it and we are very happy that they helped us through this. They've taken their product off the market for a year to research it properly and our club is going to be involved in the researching.
SUPER CAPTION: Paula Young
Both of the teenagers are animal crazy and want to be game rangers when they are older.
But they also share many of the normal interests of kids of their age.
Their environmental investigations have not ended with silkworms - they are currently testing chemical levels in river water.
