In South Africa, one of the major cities, Durban, houses an art gallery that promotes and sells original works of arts, sculpture, beadwork, tapestries and carving strictly from the local culture and the continent. The African Art Centre is a non-profit development project that aims to promote the traditional artistic heritage of African people. CCTV's Yolisa Njamela visited the centre and brings us this story.

UKZN Centre for Creative Arts to host 2018 Poetry Africa Festival
The popular annual Poetry Africa Festival hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Centre for Creative Arts will once again take place in Durban from 15 to 20 October. The festival features a host of local and international poets showcases their spoken word. Twenty one poets will be taking part in this edition with praise poetry being the main focus and will include seminars, workshops, competitions ,open mic and more. Throughout the event will also pay special attention gender-based abuse and violence.

City of Durban fosters young artistic talent

On the Niger River, in Mali's capital Bamako, lies an important centre of hair art. In 1960 Bamako had 100,000 inhabitants. Today it has about two million. Among them are many women who have a new hairstyle put on their heads every two to four weeks. The fleeting masterpieces carry such fantastic names as Bogotiginou or Dembaku, are called I pass, snake or mango blossom. So it's hardly surprising that men get carried away with compliments like Your beautiful hairstyle makes me blind to your mistakes. Even pop stars and other heroes are quoted. So there is Shakira or Mandela. Also, the humour does not come too briefly if for instance hair creations are called crooked or Congo rat. And like everywhere else in the world, youth breaks with traditions. Western ideals are often imitated. Smooth, long artificial hair is en vogue. At every corner and end of Bamako, hand-painted signs are eye-catching and advertise a variety of hairstyles. Even advertising posters hang in trees on the roadsides of residential quarters. Below them are Tresseuses, as hair weavers in the former French colonies of Africa are known. Street tresseuses offer the cheapest deals. At the upper end, hip hair artists stand in exquisite salons with prices of up to 150 euros.

The Golden Mile The Golden Mile, the nickname for the beaches near downtown that stretch along the Indian Ocean, is well known for it's excellent surfing, occasional shark attack and wide sandy beaches. Visiting around the Christmas holidays ensures a crowded experience, complete with stations for missing children, but visit at the off season and you'll practically have the place to yourself, save the serious surfers. There are also play pools and playgrounds for children along the waterfront, as well as hotel, bars and restaurants.
Crocodile Creek. In the ‘sugar town’ of Tongaat (just a few miles past Umhlanga) you will find Crocodile Creek, on the Tongaat river in sub-tropical bush. This creek is home to over 7000 Nile Crocodiles, Alligators, Caiman, snakes and other reptiles. The farm includes bush and hill trails, a waterfall, river plains and thatched buildings with tree top walkways. S.Africa's Durban turns its back on 'crime and grime'
Durban's beaches attract many tourists but its city centre has long been neglected -- with abandoned buildings taken over by gangs. The municipality has embarked on a journey to turn its back on crime and grime and 'islands' dedicated to arts and business are emerging. But critics say it will take years to join these areas into a vibrant, safe city centre.
BEYOND BINARIES EXHIBITION
Beyond Binaries is a curated exhibition featuring work by 26 artists. The exhibition aims to open up discussion on the current climate of polarization and intolerance, and the increasing trend towards fixed, essentialised identities.
Beyond Binaries features works with video, photography, paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, wire and mixed media works on show. South African born artists are complemented by their peers born in African countries as well as artists born in India, China and Germany. The exhibition has been curated by Qala!, a fledgling curatorial collective comprising Mario Pissarra, Robin Moodley and Russel Hlongwane, three Durban-born cultural workers.
Several exhibits address critical questions concerning race, gender, national identity and heritage. The relationship of people to the natural environment provides another sub-theme that is prominently featured. Several exhibits bring binaries into vivid focus, whilst others attempt to transcend these to create or suggest hybrid, fluid or emerging notions of identity.
KwaZulu-Natal province is well represented by a healthy mix of acclaimed and emerging talents: Cedric Nunn (photography), Sfiso ka Mkame, Mthobisi Maphumulo, Mhlonishwa Chiliza, Eugene Hlophe (drawings), Paul Sibisi and Nicole Pletts (paintings), Thembi Nala and Sbonelo Tau Luthuli (pottery), Hlengiwe Dube (wirework), and Kristin NG-Yang (photography and mixed media).
Bulawayo and Libreville, sister cities to Durban, are represented by Nonhlanhla Mathe (painting) and Nathalie Anguezomo Mba Bikoro (video). The exhibition also features Namibian photographer Julia Hango as well as work by African nationals living in South Africa, namely Lizette Chirrime (Mozambique), Robert Machiri (Zimbabwe), and Zemba Luzamba (DRC).
Also exhibiting are Ayesha Price, Donovan Ward, Garth Erasmus, Jeannette Unite, Jill Joubert, Manfred Zylla, Meghna Singh, Nomusa Makhubu and Thania Petersen.
The artists were selected following a process where 54 artists identified by a curatorial panel were invited to propose works on the theme of the exhibition.
Beyond Binaries was originally commissioned by the City of eThekwini for the recent Essence Festival Durban, where it was exhibited at the International Convention Centre under the banner of ARTiculate Africa.
