Interview with Lionel Smit for Manipulated Image solo exhibition at Everard Read Johannesburg
Lionel Smit
‘MANIPULATED IMAGE’
at Everard Read Johannesburg
14 November - 14 December 2019
Everard Read is delighted to announce the fourth solo exhibition of Lionel Smit in Johannesburg. Smit, leading painter and sculptor of iconic Cape Malay women, will present a series of new works, inspired by the digital age and manipulation of the image. Celebrated for his skilfully oil-painted and sculpted portraits of female subjects, his work took on a new direction when he moved to the Cape in 2009. This exhibition marks ten years of Smit starting a whole new iconography while exploring abstract qualities in painting and sculpting applications. Using meticulous techniques Smit has created a unique series of multimedia paintings that, on first glance, look like painterly works of art, but on close inspection, are a combination of silkscreen and layering of different or repeated imagery. The result is a series of works that signifies a dramatic new departure for the artist.
The whole idea behind Manipulated Image is how the digital age and technology has influenced artists and their processes. Experimentation forms a big part of the imagery where Smit uses silkscreening as part of his painting process, creating a cross over between the two mediums.
Recent solo exhibitions include Destructure with Everard Read, London; Divide, with ARTLIFE, Los Angeles and Obscura with the Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami. Smit’s sculpture Morphous has been publicly installed in Union Square, New York and is currently on display at the Grounds for Sculpture in New Jersey, USA.
Lionel Smit was born in Pretoria in 1982. As the son of a South African sculptor, Anton Smit, he was never formally trained, besides attending the Pro Arte High School. Smit rose to prominence for his iconic portrayals of the Cape Malay women after moving to Cape Town in 2009 and arranging his first solo exhibition based around this theme titled Residue at Grande Provence, Franschhoek. One of his monumental portrait’s was exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in London in 2013 receiving the Visitor’s Choice Award. His work is in several collections including that of Delaire Graff Estate, as well as the private collections of the Didrichsen Art Museum, Ellerman House, Laurence Graff and Louis Norval.

Rupert Museum - Interview Mr Deon Herselman
An interview with Deon Herselman about the Huberte Rupert, who build the museum and its collection of South African- (Irma Stern, Pierneef, etc) and European Art (Auguste Rodin, Kathe Köllwitz, Lurçat etc.)
World Art Foundations (WAF TV) would like to introduce you to Mr Deon Herselman, Director of the Rupert Museum (which forms part of the Rupert Foundation), who talks about the late Mrs Huberte Rupert’s initiative to build the museum.
Read more :
The building was opened 10 years ago and houses an extensive collection of classical South African artists, such as Irma Stern and Jacob Pierneef, as well as contemporary artists like William Kentridge.
This interview coincides with the museum’s current exhibition of the European sculptors, Antoine Bourdelle and Käthe Kollwitz, whose work was acquired by Anton and Huberte Rupert during their many trips to Europe and forms part of their extensive collection.
Dr Anton Rupert was an internationally respected industrialist who established a global business empire, continued by their son Johann. Developing a high sensitivity of quality they created Richemont, which has become a giant in the world of luxury goods.
Also wine was in his wide field of interest leading Dr. Anton Rupert to buy the wine estate La Motte in Franschhoek now in the hands by their daughter Hanneli Rupert-Koegelenberg, one of South Africa’s leading mezzo-sopranos.
La Motte hosts a permanent exhibition of the work of Jacob Pierneef from the Rupert Foundation collection, further emphasising the importance of culture for this family.

Things To Do In Cape Town | Stellenbosch | South Africa
#SouthAfrica #CapeTownRestuarant #TravelVlog
Stellenbosch is a university town in South Africa's Western Cape province.
It's surrounded by the vineyards of the Cape Winelands and the mountainous nature reserves of Jonkershoek and Simonsberg.
The town's oak-shaded streets are lined with cafes, boutiques and art galleries.
Cape Dutch architecture gives a sense of South Africa's Dutch colonial history, as do the Village Museum's period houses and gardens.
Not to mention the great atmosphere and friendly people who are always smiling skating and traveling around this beautiful town with bicycles

Franschhoek in the Cape Winelands
The Huguenot monument in Franschhoek - in honour of the French immigrants, who founded the village in 1688. In France persecuted for their protestant-calvinistic belief, they found a new home here at the Cape - and excelled particularly in wine-making. In the Huguenot Memorial Museum next to the monument the history of the Huguenots at the Cape is documented.
The pretty town of Franschhoek is very conscious of its French roots. French names everywhere. Particularly popular is the Main Road with many boutiques, art galleries, fine Restaurants with French cuisine and Cafés. A town in the Winelands not to be missed.
