Al Muizz Street and Khan Al Khalili, Cairo, Egypt - Walking down the streets of old Cairo, you will come across different names which for the local people are considered famous and well known and every single one of them will be famously known for selling a specific product, such as Al Muizz street.
Old Cairo for the tourists is mainly about Al Muizz street and Khan Al Khalili ( the places where there are different landmarks as well as where they would be able to bring souvenirs along to their friends and for themselves as well.
Starting with the first touristic attraction, it is important to mention Al Muizz street in old Cairo ( El Moez street was named after Al Mu'izz li-Din Allah, who was the fourth caliph for the Fatimid dynasty. This street is one of the oldest to be found in Cairo, it is about one kilometer long, and it is where some museums and mosques are located.
Al Muizz street is a pedestrian only zone starting from 8 in the morning until 11 at night, giving people the chance to enjoy this open air museum without taking care of the vehicles moving around. There are lots of mosques found in El Muizz street area and this is mainly because of the Islamic era it dates back to.
From the attractions found in El Moez street and which are the ones to visit first before thinking about getting deeper into this area, there is Sabil-Khuttab of Katkhuda which is the treasure of Ottoman architecture as some people refer to it since it carries a public fountain or sabil as known in the Arabic language, an elementary Quran school or Khuttab, also in the Arabic language, as well as an adjacent residential wing; this Sabil-Khuttab was built by the pioneer Egyptian architect, Abd al-Rahman Katkhuda.
After passing by this Sabil in El Moez street, we reached the second famous landmark found in this area and which is one of those to be mentioned in the list of mosques found in this street ( it is Al Aqmar mosque. Al Aqmar mosque dates back to the Fatimid era and it is considered the first in Cairo to be decorated with inscriptions and geometric craving and also the first to have a facade which follows the line of the street. This mosque is also known as the grey mosque due to the colors of its walls.
There are different mosques that one could come across in Al Muizz street, Cairo, Egypt, such as Al Hakim bi Amr Allah and which is considered the most famous in this area in addition to Sayyidna Al-Hussein, and there is also Al Azhar mosque, Abu Bakr Muzhir mosque, Gamal ElDin Ustadar mosque, Taghri Bardi mosque, Mahmoud Moharram mosque, and others, just making this area one Islamic place to head to and get inspired with the buildings found there.
Getting done with mosque of Al Aqmar, you will need to walk the street until you reach Beat El Sehemy. Beit El Sehemy (house of El Sehemy) is an old Ottoman house museum found in El Muizz street area ( This house is built in Al-Darb Al-Asfar which was considered an expensive and prestigious part of Medieval Cairo. Beat El Seheimy was built by Wahab El Tablawy but was purchased by Sheikh As-Suhaymi who his family held it for several years and who extended it from its original form by incorporating neighboring houses to it.
After getting done with Al Muizz street, you will then move forward to reach Khan Al Khalili market which is famously known to sell antiques, souvenirs and is the place where gold and silver accessories are known to be found in wide varieties. Khan Al Khalili bazaar is also a small district where Egyptian style coffee shops are found and where people could enjoy drinking mint tea or getting a shisha in one of them; one of the oldest is called El-Fishawi.
Al Muizz street, Cairo, Egypt, extends from Bab Al-Futuh in the north to Bab Zuweila in the south, and through these two points, tourists will get introduced to different artists who either draw, do handmade antiques, or who might be involved with other handmade silver work, not just that, but tourists will pass by a lot of museums and buildings which they will get astonished by, some they will be allowed to enter and see from the inside while there are those which they will get inspired with from the outside only.
Al Muizz street and Khan Al Khalili in Cairo are part of old Cairo area in Egypt and thus they are considered too close to other historical landmarks and destinations which tourists might have on their plan, such as Salah Eldin citadel ( in which one will get the chance to see Muhammad Ali mosque ( or even visit the religious community which is also considered part of old Cairo (

Cairo parties as Egypt reaches World Cup after 27 years' wait
(8 Oct 2017) Egyptian football fans took to the streets of Cairo late on Sunday to celebrate the country's World Cup qualification after a 27-year absence.
Fans waved flags and lit flares and fireworks after Egypt sealed qualification with a win over Republic of Congo at home on Sunday.
Egypt finished top of Group E in African qualifying with a game to spare.
The country last qualified for the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

Cairo Tower; It Overlooks the City of Cairo and the Nile
Cairo Tower, Cairo, Egypt - Even though it is not the longest tower in whole Africa, it is still considered the tallest in Egypt and North Africa for the past 50 years.
It might not be one of the historical suggestions we would give like the great pyramids of Giza ( or the citadel ( but it is definitely one of the most important and most famously known landmarks of Cairo that tourists should visit.
The whole point behind Cairo tower is to give the visitors the chance to overlook Cairo from 187 meters above. This tower, which was built by the famous Egyptian architect at that time, Naoum Shebib, was built in the time when the Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser was ruling the country.
Building Cairo tower took seven years, it started in 1954 and was finished by 1961. Those 90 floors related to this tower were built in an attempt to take the shape of the Pharanoic lotus plant which is an iconic symbol of ancient Egypt and the Pharaohs.
Cairo Tower is considered one of the famous modern monuments in Cairo and it has been considered the second most famous landmark in Egypt after the great pyramids of Giza ( making it a must visit for all the tourists who are planning to visit Egypt.
The location of Cairo tower is in El Gezira destrict on El Gezira island, but some people consider this part related to El Zamalek island in the Nile river, which is very close to the downtown area, just a couple of minutes drive away and some people could even walk to there. Cairo tower was considered the tallest for 50 years in Egypt and North Africa, and for 10 years in Africa as a whole until South Africa built its Hillbrow Tower.
Getting to see a view of the greater Cairo from the deck on the top of the tower is the most important thing for visiting this landmark, but in addition to that, Cairo tower is considered beneficial because it could also be the place for those searching for a different kind of restaurant since there is the rotating restaurant at the top just under the deck which gives people the chance to view the greater Cairo without having to move around and at the same time while enjoying their meal - this takes about 70 minutes for a full rotation.
The working hours of this tower start from 8 AM and ends at 1 AM in summer, while in winter it starts also at 8 AM but closes at 12 AM. The entrance fee for Egyptians is 25 Egyptian pounds and might now reach about 120 or 150 for foreigners. This might be considered expensive but it is still considered a huge difference between locals and foreigners.
The place should be on your list but there are a couple of things to keep in your mind. First of all, the perfect time for visiting this tower and being up there is sunset, but this attraction is not only visited by foreigners, there are actually a lot of locals there as well, so you will need to be there before sunset with a couple of hours to make sure that you will be up just on time due to the long queue which you will most probably stand in and attend.
In addition to the long queue and the amount of time you will spend waiting, you should know that the bar up there offers drinks and sandwiches and the rotating restaurant is the one to serve you meals; we of course recommend the rotating one but if you don't want to eat then the bar at the deck could be considered a good option.
Since you are going to be in El Zamalek area to visit Cairo tower - which is known by the locals as Nasser's Pineapple - here are some recommendations for places which you could pass by and spend some time in: you could previously book yourself a ticket in the Cairo Opera House to any of the shows being presented during the day (you could check that on their website), you could have a walk by the Nile in the greenery park, El Andalus ( you could have a walk around El Zamalek island and sit in any of the cafes or restaurants found there.
In addition to these different places found in the same area, you could also think about other plans if you want to see some historical things, like going to the downtown area which is minutes away and check the Egyptian Museum ( walk through the streets of this area ( or even go and visit the Islamic Art Museum (
Egypt is filled with historical places to visit to know more about its heritage but it also has those places which you could visit to enjoy nature, have a walk, or even get the chance to see the whole city from the top, just like the case with Cairo Tower.
Never miss a chance to visit Egypt, which is now even considered within your budget with good prices due to the economic problems it has been suffering from during the last year; so think about planning a trip to there.

Manila- Oman- Cairo flight
From Manila, we fly to Muscat Oman for our connecting flight to Cairo, Egypt. It was a long 8 hr flight. We arrived at NAIA Airport as early as 12 MN, Checked in at 4am and flown at 7am for 5 hrs going to Muscat and proceeded for our transfer and another 3 hours of flight to Cairo. Arriving at Cairo in the evening , There was a man who helped us and gave us our Visa and then passed through the Immigration and baggage after.We were welcomed with flowers and then hopped into the bus and moved to the Chinese Restaurant for the Dinner. After which, with all the jetlag and and fatigue, we reached our Hotel to rest and sleep. It was like a one day stay in the plane and a nice time to relax and prepare for the activities for tomorrow. Thanks for Oman Air for our partner aircraft, Scorpio travel and tours and to all the people who ushered and assited us. Cairo here we go.

Sadly, the whole place has been looted and it is largely neglected and abandoned, as you will see.
Coptic Cairo is a part of Old Cairo which encompasses the Babylon Fortress, the Coptic Museum, the Hanging Church, the Greek Church of St. George and many other Coptic churches and historical sites. It is believed in Christian tradition that the Holy Family visited this area and stayed at the site of Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church. Coptic Cairo was a stronghold for Christianity in Egypt until the Islamic era, though most of the current buildings of the churches in Coptic Cairo were built after the Muslim conquest of Egypt in the 7th century.
Cairo is the capital of Egypt. The city's metropolitan area is one of the largest in Africa, the largest in the Middle East and 15th-largest in the world, and is associated with ancient Egypt, as the famous Giza pyramid complex and the ancient city of Memphis are located in its geographical area. Located near the Nile Delta, modern Cairo was founded in 969 AD by the Fatimid dynasty, but the land composing the present-day city was the site of ancient national capitals whose remnants remain visible in parts of Old Cairo. Cairo has long been a centre of the region's political and cultural life, and is titled the city of a thousand minarets for its preponderance of Islamic architecture.

Pharaoh Ramses II statue unearthed in Cairo
Archaeologists in Cairo believe they have uncovered parts of a temple of Pharaoh Ramses II, including an eight-metre-high statue.
