Traveller Tips

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit the Agasthya Koodam in Trivandrum, Kerala, is from December to March every year as it is the time when the Forest Department allows a trek in that zone.
How to Reach
The Agasthyakoodam Biosphere Reserve is located at a distance of 35.5 km from Trivandrum. This forest reserve has to be reached by boarding a bus or by hiring a cab to the village of Bonacaud. From there, a 15-minute walk down the rugged road will take you to the Forest Office which is the entrance point to the Agasthyakoodam Biosphere Reserve.

This is the second highest peak in Kerala.
This is a proposed World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.
This biosphere reserve houses more than 2000 medicinal plant species.
The breathtaking Bona Falls is situated in this region.
The forest is named after Sage Agasthya, the famous mythological character, who had meditated in this forest region itself.
Only 100 people having full physical fitness are permitted to enter the forest daily after thorough verification. Women and children are not permitted to enter the forest and take part in trekking.

Agasthyarkoodam is a pilgrimage centre for devotees of the Hindu sage Agastya, who is considered to be one of the seven rishis (Saptarishi) of Hindu Puranas. In Tamil traditions, Agastya is considered as the father of the Tamil language and the compiler of the first Tamil grammar called Agattiyam or Akattiyam and also the Malayalam language is considered to be born from Agasthya. There is a full-sized statue of Agathiyar at the top of the peak and the devotees can offer pujas themselves. Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve is among 20 new sites added by UNESCO to its World Network of Biosphere Reserves in March 2016. The International Co-coordinating Council added the new sites during a two-day meeting on March 19, 2016 in Lima, bringing the total number of biosphere reserves to 669 sites in 120 countries, including 16 trans-boundary sites.

Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve trekking is one of the challenging trekking place in south India.
Agasthyakoodam (also known as Agasthyarkoodam) is a 1868m tall mountain within the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala. It lies on the border between Kerala and Tamilnadu. It is also known as Agasthyamala in Malayalam (അഗസ്ത്യമല) and Pothigai Malai in Tamil. This mountain belongs to the Ashambu Hills, the southern end of Western Ghats. There are over 25 peaks in Ashambu Hills and Agasthyakoodam peak is the tallest one among them.
Biosphere reserves are sites established by various countries under the UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) operated program called Man and the Biosphere (MAB). This program aims to create biosphere reserves to protect biological and cultural diversity of a region while promoting sustainable economic development. Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve (ABR) was established in 2001 under the UNESCO MAB program. This is a large site covering about 3500 square kilometres and spans across the forests of southern Kerala and Tamilnadu.
Agasthyakoodam Trekking
Agasthyakoodam peak and surrounding areas are protected reserved forest under the control of Kerala Forest Department and entry is restricted. Forest department allows a controlled trekking during January to March of every year. This trekking starts on the day of the Makaravilakku festival in Sabarimala temple and ends on the Sivarathri day. Usually this means that the trek will be available for about 60 days. Only 100 entry passes are issued each day of the trek and the entry passes are given on first come first serve basis.
