Beautifull gorge. 7 km long. About 3-4 hour walk. It takes another hour walk from the end of the gorge to the village of Sougia. Difficulty level: Medium.

Video recording from 19.06.2013. The gorge is also recommended for families with children (10 years). Between 2 - 3 1/2 hours is required for the hike. On the rest areas you can comfortably settle. The whole canyon is shaded if the hike is early in the morning.
Videoaufzeichnung vom 19.06.2013. Die Schlucht ist empfehlenswert auch für Familien mit Kinder (10 Jahre). Zwischen 2 - 3 1/2 Stunden benötigt man für die Wanderung. An den Rastplätzen kann man sich gemütlich nieder lassen. Bei morgendlicher Wanderung liegt die ganze Schlucht im Schatten.

The Agia Irini gorge has an easier start compared to the Samaria gorge, you actually cannot compare the two. We start at the top of the Agia Irini gorge and walk back to Sougia. The Agia Irini gorge has stunning views and is breathtakingly beautiful. Along the riverbed we walk back to Sougia. In Sougia you will have time in the afternoon to go for swimming and snorkelling! We eat dinner in the evening in Sougia.

Zamiast wracać z lotniska Chania w nasze wioskowe pielesze wyruszyliśmy do ukochanej Sougia.
Zamiast przemierzać wąwóz Samaria udaliśmy się na wędrówkę do wąwozu Agia Irini.
Na prawdę! Nie trzeba zaliczać Samarii. Są na Krecie inne wąwozy.

Instead of going back to our village from Chania airport we went to our lovely Sougia.
Instead of walking Samaria gorge we chose Agia Irini gorge.
Really! Not only Samaria! There are other gorges on Crete, beautiful, quiet and almost empty...

Μονή Αγίας Ειρήνης Κρουσσώνα/Agia irini Monastery, Crete in 4K
Η μονή Αγίας Ειρήνης βρίσκεται 25km νότια του Ηρακλείου και 3km δυτικά του Κρουσσώνα, στις πλαγιές του Ψηλορείτη και σε υψόμετρο 630m. Η μονή λειτουργεί ως γυναικείο μοναστήρι και είναι από τις παλαιότερες στην Κρήτη. Πιστεύεται ότι κτίστηκε κατά το τέλος της Ενετοκρατίας, αλλά καταστράφηκε από τους Τούρκους το 1822, για να ξανακτιστεί το 1944. Ο δίκλιτος ναός της μονής είναι αφιερωμένος στην Αγία Ειρήνη. Το μοναστήρι ανήκει στα ακμαία μοναστήρια της Κρήτης.

Φαράγγι Αγίας Ειρήνης/Agias Irini's Gorge, Crete in 4K
Το φαράγγι της Αγίας Ειρήνης βρίσκεται στη δυτική πλευρά των Λευκών Ορέων, στην επαρχία Σελίνου. Έχει πάρει το όνομα του από το χωριουδάκι που βρίσκεται κοντά στην είσοδο του, 46 χλμ. από τα Χανιά. Το μήκος του είναι 7.50 χλμ και η διάβαση του διαρκεί περίπου τρεις ώρες. Το ρέμα που διέρχεται από το φαράγγι καταλήγει στη θάλασσα, στο χωριό Σούγια με την όμορφη παραλία, όπου μπορείτε να απολαύσετε ένα αξέχαστο μπάνιο στα νερά του Νότιου Κρητικού Πελάγους.
Το φαράγγι αποτελεί τµήµα του Ευρωπαϊκού µονοπατιού Ε4. Η νότια είσοδος απέχει 5 χιλιόµετρα από τη Σούγια. Αποτελεί τµήµα της περιοχής NATURA 2000 και έχει χαρακτηριστεί ως Καταφύγιο Άγριας Ζωής από το Υπουργείο Γεωργίας. Το φαράγγι αποτελεί τµήµα του βιοτόπου του Κρητικού Αίγαγρου και χαρακτηρίζεται από ποικίλα µικροπεριβάλλοντα που αποτελούν καταφύγιο και ενδιαίτηµα για πολλά είδη πανίδας. Χαρακτηριστικός είναι και ο πλούτος της δασικής βλάστησης τόσο από άποψη δένδρων (κυπαρίσσι, τραχεία πεύκη, σφενδάµι , πλάτανος, πουρνάρι, αριά) αλλά και των θάµνων, φρυγάνων καθώς και των αρωµατικών φυτών µε κυριότερο το δίκταµο.
Το Αγιερηνιώτικο φαράγγι είναι το δεύτερο σε επισκεψιµότητα φαράγγι του Νοµού Χανίων µετά τη Σαμαριά, ενώ είναι επισκέψιµο για µεγαλύτερη χρονική περίοδο.
The gorge of Agia Irini is on the west side of the White Mountains, with many vertical passes. It gets its name from the homonym village located near the entrance, 46 km from Chania. Its length is 7.5 km and its crossing takes three hours. The gorge ends up in the seaside village of Sougia, where there is a clean and beautiful beach where you can enjoy a memorable swimming in the waters of the Libyan Sea. Once a day, the ferry runs from the port of Sougia, to connect the village with Chora Sfakion in the east and Paleochora in the west.
The gorge is part of the European path E4. It’s south entrance is located 5 kilometers north from Sougia. It is part of the NATURA 2000 program and has also been designated as a wildlife sanctuary by the Ministry of Agriculture. The gorge hosts the endangered Cretan wild goat, kri kri, and is characterized by a variety of microenvironments that habitat for many species of wildlife. The variety in flora is very important, from trees (cypress, pine, maple, plane, oak, holm oak) to shrubs, brushwoods and fine herbs such as dittany.

Grèce - Randonnée en Crète - Gorge d'Agia Irini
Petite randonnée dans le Sud-Ouest de la Crète entre Agia Irini et Sougia. Faute de temps et d’intérêt, nous ne ferons que la première partie de la randonnée soit 7.5 km dans la gorge au départ d'Agia Irini (15 km aller/retour). La rivière est à sec dès la fin du printemps. Dommage donc, il manque quelque chose au paysage. Ceci dit, il n'y a quasiment personne, c'est donc beaucoup plus agréable que les gorges de Samaria noires de monde.
