Agiofarago Gorge (meaning Gorge of Saints) is located in south of Odigitria Monastery and has been shaped near the beds of two streams.The gorge is bounded by rising huge vertical rocks at its right and left sides, where there are many caves. Agiofarago is very scenic and picturesque, accessed only on foot. The place is isolated, wild and rugged. Agiofarago Gorge (meaning Gorge of Saints) is located in south of Odigitria Monastery and has been shaped near the beds of two streams.

Its name indicates that it was used by many hermits who stayed here because of the isolation of the area. According to a legend, three hundred hermits lived here in absolute isolation from each other. They met only once a year at “Goumenospilio” and then they were aware of those who had died the previous year.

The gorge is bounded by rising huge vertical rocks at its right and left sides, where there are many caves. Agiofarago is very scenic and picturesque, accessed only on foot. The place is isolated, wild and rugged.

Crete | Agiofarago Beach

Crete | Agiofarago Beach. Agiofarago, means gorge of Saints. It is located 80 Km south of Heraklion. Getting there can be tricky but nevertheless you shouldn't miss it! It is in close distance to the Monastery of Odigitria and to Sivas village.
The only way to go is by car or motorcycle. But then you will have to walk around 45 min to get there through a small corge. An alternative way is to get there by boat from Matala, Agia Galini or Kali Limenes.

Agiofarago Gorge - Crete

Beautiful short gorge which ends at a bay. Only 1 hour need to wander through the canyon. The road access is very bumpy. Not recommended for a private car.

Schöne kurze Schlucht die in an einer Bucht endet. In 1 Stunde hat man die Schlucht durchwandert. Die Anfahrt ist sehr holprig. Nicht empfehlenswert für ein Privatauto.

To get there you must either cross the gorge, by easy hiking of about 30-50’, or catch a boat from Matala, Agia Galini, or Kali Limenes.
