The Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens aka Metropolis (Athens, Greece)
Known to the locals as Metropolis, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens is a stunning sight, sitting in the center of Athens. You may want to snap a picture and move along, stare at it's facade or go the whole hog and see what lurks inside!
The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Annunciation (Greek: Καθεδρικός Ναός Ευαγγελισμού της Θεοτόκου) popularly known as the Mētrópolis, is the cathedral church of the Archbishopric of Athens and all Greece.
Construction of the Cathedral began on Christmas Day, 1842 with the laying of the cornerstone by King Otto and Queen Amalia.
Workers used marble from 72 demolished churches to build the Cathedral's immense walls. Three architects and 20 years later, it was complete. On May 21, 1862, the completed Cathedral was dedicated to the Annunciation of the Mother of God '(Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου)' by the King and Queen. The Cathedral is a three-aisled, domed basilica that measures 130 feet (40 m) long, 65 feet (20 m) wide, and 80 feet (24 m) high. Inside are the tombs of two saints killed by the Ottoman Turks during the Ottoman period: Saint Philothei and Patriarch Gregory V.
Saint Philothei built a convent, was martyred in 1559, and her bones are still visible in a silver reliquary. She is honored for ransoming Greek women enslaved in Ottoman Empire's harems.
Gregory V the Ethnomartyr, Patriarch of Constantinople, was hanged by order of Sultan Mahmud II and his body thrown into the Bosphorus in 1821, in retaliation for the Greek uprising on March 25, leading to the Greek War of Independence. His body was rescued by Greek sailors and eventually enshrined in Athens.
To the immediate south of the Cathedral is the little Church of St. Eleftherios also called the Little Mitropoli.
In the Square in front of the Cathedral stand two statues. The first is that of Saint Constantine XI the Ethnomartyr, the last Byzantine Emperor. The second is a statue of Archbishop Damaskinos who was Archbishop of Athens during World War II and was Regent for King George II and Prime Minister of Greece in 1946.
The Metropolitan Cathedral remains a major landmark in Athens and the site of important ceremonies with national political figures present, as well as weddings and funerals of the rich and famous.

Sharing video highlights/slight vlog-ish of our Athens Trip – Part 1 (super late upload).
Warning a bit long: If you’re planning to go to Athens/Europe this might be helpful.
Some observations/highlights during this Athens trip
1. Background song was “Till I met you”, from Jadine Teleserye (not obvious, I watch OTwol before- Pinoy series), I tried to make a parody, but its way harder to do than I thought it was.
2. Places to visit in Athens – Acropolis of Athens (Parthenon, Erechteion, Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Byzantine Cistern, Temple of Rome and Augustus, Choragic Monument of Lysicrates), Hadrian’s arch, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Ancient Agora of Athens, Temple of Hephaestus, Stoa of Attalos, Roman Agora, Panathenaic Stadium, Mount Lycabettus, Academy of Athens, National Archeological Museum, Monastiraki, Hadrians Library, Syntagma Square (changing of guards), Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, Agios Eleftherios Church, Statue of Constantine XI Palaiologos, Church of Panaghia Kapnikarea,
3. Accomodation - We stayed for 3 days in Athens. I stayed at Athens Backpackers (nice location near the train station), and my friend stayed at Hotel Ilissos (nice location as well). If you’re not picky and comfortable staying with others go for hostels/backpackers, if you have the budget and you find it hard to sleep next to a stranger go for solo room/hotels.
4. Transport – We purchased Athena card – 22 Euros valid for 3 days, unli bus and train. We have’nt experienced any traffic, and the train was not crowded. Your google Map/GPS will surely work here.
5. Visa Application – If you’re from Singapore, if Greece is your only destination you can only apply it at French Embassy.
6. Foods – most common that you should try – Souvlaki, Moussaka, Gyros, Feta and Cheese. Ofcourse the Greek Yogurt..haha. Food here is cheaper compared to other European countries (ranging from 7 – 10 euros per meal- they have big servings per plate, so we normally share 1 order for 2 person).
7. Locals – as per our experience most of them were accommodating, the taxi driver taught us some of their language. They can understand English, though if not, you can use google translator (it helps).
8. Weather – we went there during summer, and Summer there is really summer 32-33 degs. (compared to other Europe cities where it is summer but the temp. At morning is at 16deg cels). Use sunscreen if you like. For me, I’m the only person there who used umbrella – trust me it helps a lot. hahaha (too hot), though you might feel judged at first, coz Europeans love the heat of the sun. Don’t forget to bring water if you visit in summer.
9. Wifi / Internet – If you’re from Singapore, we highly recommend Changi Recommends. Around, 5-7 Sgd per day. Or avail of pocket data. Some of my friends bought sim cards from online stores (it will save a lot of penny, though it will limit your internet use – not for millenials.lol)
10. Cost – It is pricier to visit in Summer (coz its their peak season), though its okay as well, coz more activities can be done. Also you don’t need to carry a lot of bulky winter clothes, - tee’s (tshirt) will be enough/good.
11. Bags/Luggage – Its important to travel light if you’re going to Europe. They have limited lift/Elevator, Escalator- so imagine carrying two 20kg luggage in the stairs (too heavy).
12. Tours – We highly recommend to avail “Special Package Ticket – 30 Euros” if you target to visit Acropolis and other archeological sites. – Saves a lot of money. During summer, daytime is 6:30am – 8:30am, so its a long day to visit the city. If you want to avoid the crowd, better be there early in the morning.
13. Language – 99% of people in Athens speak in Greek (but as per our experience they can easily understand English). We tried to speak in English for this Video – to cater for our foreign friends..lol (pardon the grammar, accent issues). Of course, we don’t know how to speak in greek.
14. Create lots of Memories, i’m thankful to my gorgeous and super beautiful travelmate/photographer here who’s very selfless in taking our photos. We brought, Mirrorless cam, SLR Cam, DJI stabilizer for videos. (aside from our phone cam) – I believe that when we reach 50 yrs. Old, we will be thankful to our 30+ years old self, for documenting all our adventures. haha
15. Safety – We felt safe throughout the entire trip in Athens. We have not encountered any pickpocketters. Though, mindful/careful attention of your belongings is a must. For me, I personally invest in PACsafe bags to secure my belongings. It will give you peace of mind during the entire trip. Don’t put all you money in 1 place.

The Blessing marks EPIPHANY DAY, one of the most important religious days on the Greek calendar.
Hundreds of people gather at Rye Pier and beach to watch the ceremenoy and celebrate the blessing of the waters.

In Agia Filothei street is the house of greek orthodox Archimandrite. It is close to the greek cathedral church which is only two blocks away. It is guarded by the police 24/7. The area is full of shops, specialized on religious items. Take a look , especially if you are an orthodox christian. Agia Filotheis opens up into the spacious Mitropoleos Square. The first you see is the smaller Agios Eleftherios Church. Watch more carefully and you will realize that it was build upon and with the ruins of an Ancient Greek temple. Something very common in Greece. Behind it, is the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens. It was built by the first greek king Otto of modern Greece. Numerous demolished churches provided the materials needed for its construction. The historic center of Athens is full of churches and the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens is one of the most recent. During the 1999 earthquake of Athens it received serious damages. It was decided to be supported by graceless steal beams. There was a strong dispute between the old archbishop and the government about the repair expenses. The new Archimandrite stopped its operation and began the extensive repairs in 2009. Due to the greek economic crisis the pace of repairs is slowed down and I'm afraid that the scaffoldings will stay for many years.
Mitropoleos square is surrounded by Cafeterias. Law prohibits the presence of cafeterias , pubs and restaurants near churches. It is bended as usual. You will soon discover that the historical center of Athens is full of churches, small or bigger ones. Adding the immense touristic development of the area, there is tolerance. I do not disagree with that but sometimes is overdone.

Pláka (Greek: Πλάκα) is the picturesque old historical neighbourhood of Athens, clustered around the northern and eastern slopes of the Acropolis, and incorporating labyrinthine streets and neoclassical architecture. Plaka is built on top of the residential areas of the ancient town of Athens. During the early modern age and until the early 20th century Plaka was noted at the time as the Albanian quarter of Athens[1][2][3][4][5] It is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists around the year, and is under strict zoning and conservation regulations, being the only neighborhood in Athens where all utilities (water, power, cable television, telephone, internet, and sewage) lie underground in fully accessible, custom-made tunnelling. Motor vehicles are not allowed in Plaka, and most streets are too narrow, thus not being able to accommodate them anyway.
Museums in Plaka include the new Jewish Museum of Greece, the Greek Folk Art Museum and the Frissiras Museum. Excavations have proven that Adrianou Street is the oldest street in Athens still in continuous use with the exact same layout since antiquity. Of special interest is the neighborhood of Anafiotika, the part of Plaka that is built against the northern slope of the Acropolis; built by immigrants from the Aegean island of Anafi in the early 19th century, it features traditional Cycladic architecture.
The Choragic Monument of Lysicrates near the Acropolis of Athens was erected by the choregos Lysicrates, a patron of many theatrical performances in the Theater of Dionysus, to commemorate the award of first prize in 335 BC or 334 BC, to one of the performances he had sponsored. The choregos was the sponsor who paid for and supervised the training of the dramatic dance-chorus.
Syntagma Square (Greek: Πλατεία Συντάγματος, Constitution Square), is located in central Athens, Greece. The Square is named after the Constitution King Othon was forced to grant the people after a popular and military uprising, on September 3, 1843.
The square proper is bordered by Vassileos Georgiou A' Street to the north, Othonos Street to the south, Filellinon Street to the west and Amalias Avenue to the east. The eastern side of the square is higher than the western, and dominated by a set of marble steps leading to Amalias Avenue; beneath these lies the Syntagma metro station. The stairs emerge below between a pair of outdoor cafes, and are a popular city-centre gathering place. Syntagma also includes two green areas to the north and south, planted with shade trees, while in the center of the square a large water fountain traditionally hosts the occasionally sighted Syntagma pigeons, along with heat-tormented Athenians during the summer.
Syntagma Square is also the frequent site of political demonstrations. The Greek Parliament is immediately across Amalias Avenue to the east, and surrounded by the extensive National Gardens, which are open to the public. Every hour, the changing of the guard ceremony, performed by the Presidential Guard, is conducted in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on the area between the square and parliament. On Sundays and official holidays, the ceremonial changing of the guard takes place with an army band and the majority of the 120 Evzones present at 11am.
Syntagma Square is also a hub for many forms of public transportation in Athens; Syntagma station of the Athens Metro is here, the tram stops here, and buses or trolley-buses are available to many points in the city. Travel between Syntagma Square and the Eleftherios Venizelos Airport is available via special airport bus and metro lines. Free wireless Internet access at high speeds (4 Mbit/s) is offered by the Municipality of Athens at the Square.
The Square is also located near many of Athens' oldest and most famous neighbourhoods and tourist attractions. The neighborhoods of Plaka (Πλάκα), Monastiraki (Μοναστηράκι), Psiri (Ψυρρή) and Kolonaki (Κολωνάκι) are all within walking distance, and most of the famous sites of ancient Athens are nearby, including the Acropolis (Ακρόπολις), the Theater of Dionysus, the Areopagus, the Ancient Agora of Athens (Αρχαία Αγορά των Αθηνών) with Hadrian's Library, the Tower of the Winds in the Roman Agora, the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates, the Arch of Hadrian (Αψίς του Ανδριανού), the Temple of Olympian Zeus (Ναός του Ολυμπίου Διός), the Pnyx (Πνύκα), the Philopappos Monument (Μνημείο του Φιλοπάππου) on the Hill of the Nymphs, the Kerameikos Cemetery (Νεκροταφείο Κεραμικού), the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (Μνημείο του Αγνώστου Στρατιώτη) and Lycabettus Hill.
