AGIOS GEORGIOS CHURCH PARALIMNI CYPRUS EUROPE
Saint Lazarus Church - Cyprus Larnaca [HD]
The Church is named after the New Testament friend of Jesus whom he rose from the dead which is recounted in the Gospel of St John 11:41-44 that is Lazarus of Bethany.
Naturally, the miracle of the resurrection of Lazarus aroused the Jews and the High Priests planned to put Lazarus to death (John XII 9-11), as he constituted living evidence of the miracle.
Therefore the banished saint fled to the island of Cyprus where he encountered the apostles Paul and Barnabas and was ordained as the first Bishop of Citium (Present day Larnaca) as the first Bishop of Cyprus.
He is said to have lived for thirty more years and on his death was buried there for the second and last time.
Agios Georgios Alamanos Monastery, Cyprus
Agios Georgios Alamanos Monastery.
Agios Georgios Alamanos Monastery is located within 20 km. north-east of Limassol, not far from the way to Larnaca.
The monastery was founded in XII century. Tourists can buy icons, painted by monks.
The monastery of Agios Georgios Alamanos standing majestically, like an ancient castle, is found south west of Pentakomo. Two recently built Byzantine rhythm chapels, those of Agioi Pantes and Agios Nektarios, the main church in the middle of the complex and the nuns' cells on the ground as well as the first floor of the tall buildings which surround the church, are what catch the eye of the visitor. In this commune, and under the supervision and succour of the Mother Superior, each nun has her own particular duties. The history of the monastery of Agios Georgios Alamanos is lost in the depths of time. According to Machairas, one of the 300 Alaman saints who reached Cyprus, came to this remote and tranquil spot to exercise his monastic life. It is not certain whether a monastery was founded here during the Frankish period, later to be disestablished during the Ottoman occupation of Cyprus. What is certain is that in 1880 Paisius re-established this location as a worshipping site. Paisius constructed the first monastic cells and repaired the decrepit church, which, together, formed the nucleus of the contemporary monastery. Monastic life, however, did not continue uninterrupted since, for a number of reasons, Paisius was compelled to abandon the monastery. In 1949, the then Bishop of Kitium and later Makarios III, Archbishop of Cyprus, reorganised the monastery and, with his support, led to the settling there of about 13 nuns from the monastery of Agios Antonios, near Deryneia. Thanks to the diligence, zeal and faith of these first nuns, the monastery was transformed in no time. The number of cells was increased, the number of visitors multiplied, and contributions led to the establishment of many modern amenities.

Catacomb of Phaneromeni Church, Larnaca
The small Panagia Phaneromeni Church is located on the busy thoroughfare of Phaneromeni Avenue (named after the church), and dates back to the early 20th century. It is devoted to the Virgin Mary and replaces a Medieval church on the same spot, whilst a cave underneath served as an early Christian church and was originally a royal monolithic tomb of the town’s prehistoric times – believed to most likely be Mycenaean Greek. Today, a larger, modern church sits beside the older one and was constructed to serve the expanding community of the parish.
The small church and its cave are credited with various magical properties; those who suffer from headaches or other diseases walk three times around the church and leave a piece of clothing or a tuft of their hair in the belief that they will be healed. The church is also visited by women whose partners are overseas, with the belief that prayers given for their safety will ensure it.

The murals of The Holy, Royal Monastery of Kykkos Cyprus
The Holy, Royal and Stavropegic Monastery of Kykkos, is the largest & most famous monastery in Cyprus. Founded in AD1100 by the Byzantine Emperor Alexios Komnenus, Kykkos Monastery lies in the heart of the Troodos mountains. Little remains of the original monastic buildings due to devastating fires throughout the centuries. The present abbot, the Most Reverend Fr. Nikiphoros, undertook the restoration of Kykkos Monastery and this has recently been completed.
The recent murals & paintings that adorn the monastery are particularly fine and it is these that I have concentrated on for this film, following a number of visits. The frescoes in the main part of the church were painted by the Cypriot painter Gorge Georgiou & the golden mosaics are the work of the Cypriot artist Philippos Kepolas....
