ISLAND of SANTORINI: EXPLORING the beautiful CHURCHES ⛪ of this paradise (GREECE)
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's drive together around this beautiful Greek island and let's admire the architecture of its colorful churches. Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. Santorini (Greek: Σαντορίνη) or Thera (English pronunciation and officially Thira (Greek: Θήρα), is an island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 mi) southeast of Greece's mainland.
Santorini is one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. It was devastated by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC, forever shaping its rugged landscape. The whitewashed, cubiform houses of its 2 principal towns, Fira and Oia, cling to cliffs above an underwater caldera (crater). They overlook the sea, small islands to the west and beaches made up of black, red and white lava pebbles.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

Skyros, Greece - Skyros Town - AtlasVisual
Skyros Video Map:
Skyros Town, or Chora, is a spectacular island capital and harbor. White houses are stacked up into the hillside overlooking a picturesque harbor. Winding roads and alleys curve through the town, leading to the center square, Pano Piatsa (Upper Square). There is a castle perched atop the mountain behind the town. A Byzantine fortress and Venetian architecture round out the beauty of the town. The center of the village has many hotels and places to stay, restaurants, bars and cafes. Other places to see in Skyros Town: Agia Triada church; the Monastery of Agios Georgios; the Statue of Immortal Poetry in commemoration of Rupert Brooke, the English poet who died on the island; the 17th century Agios Athanasios church; and Agios Konstantinos church. Also worth seeing: The Folklore Museum and Archaeological Museum. The view from the top of the hill of Skyros Town is breathtaking -- green land, blue sea and the town stretched out below you.

Church of the Holy Apostles - Athens (Greece)
The Church of the Holy Apostles (Greek: Ἅγιοι Ἀπόστολοι, Turkish: Havariyyun Kilisesi), also known as the Imperial Polyándreion (Imperial Cemetery), was an Eastern Greek Orthodox church in Constantinople, capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. The first structure dates from the fourth century, although future emperors increase and improve space. It was the second in size and importance only for the Hagia Sophia among the great churches of the capital. When Constantinople fell in the Ottomans in 1453, the Holy Apostles became briefly the seat of the Ecumenical Patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church. Three years later, the building, which was in a dilapidated state, was abandoned by the Patriarch, and in 1461 was demolished by the Ottomans to make room for the Fatih Mosque.

Ancient Thera (Greek: Αρχαία Θήρα) is an antique city on a ridge of the steep, 360 m high Messavouno mountain on the Greek island of Santorini. It was named after the mythical ruler of the island, Theras, and was inhabited from the 9th century BC until 726 AD. Starting in 1895 the city was systematically investigated by Friedrich Hiller von Gaertringen, who excavated there until 1904. Later excavations by N. Zapheiropoulos between 1961 and 1982 under the auspices of the Archaeological Society of Athens unearthed the city's necropolis in Sellada. Findings from these excavations are on exhibit at the archaeological museum in Fira. Excavation work was again taken up between 1990 and 1994 under the leadership of Wolfram Hoepfner of the Free University of Berlin and resulted in a more precise understanding of the history of the southern Aegean.
Ancient Thera is today open to the public and can be reached on a winding road that starts at Kamari or several foot paths from both sides of the mountain.
