Agios Georgios Alamanos Monastery, Cyprus
Agios Georgios Alamanos Monastery.
Agios Georgios Alamanos Monastery is located within 20 km. north-east of Limassol, not far from the way to Larnaca.
The monastery was founded in XII century. Tourists can buy icons, painted by monks.
The monastery of Agios Georgios Alamanos standing majestically, like an ancient castle, is found south west of Pentakomo. Two recently built Byzantine rhythm chapels, those of Agioi Pantes and Agios Nektarios, the main church in the middle of the complex and the nuns' cells on the ground as well as the first floor of the tall buildings which surround the church, are what catch the eye of the visitor. In this commune, and under the supervision and succour of the Mother Superior, each nun has her own particular duties. The history of the monastery of Agios Georgios Alamanos is lost in the depths of time. According to Machairas, one of the 300 Alaman saints who reached Cyprus, came to this remote and tranquil spot to exercise his monastic life. It is not certain whether a monastery was founded here during the Frankish period, later to be disestablished during the Ottoman occupation of Cyprus. What is certain is that in 1880 Paisius re-established this location as a worshipping site. Paisius constructed the first monastic cells and repaired the decrepit church, which, together, formed the nucleus of the contemporary monastery. Monastic life, however, did not continue uninterrupted since, for a number of reasons, Paisius was compelled to abandon the monastery. In 1949, the then Bishop of Kitium and later Makarios III, Archbishop of Cyprus, reorganised the monastery and, with his support, led to the settling there of about 13 nuns from the monastery of Agios Antonios, near Deryneia. Thanks to the diligence, zeal and faith of these first nuns, the monastery was transformed in no time. The number of cells was increased, the number of visitors multiplied, and contributions led to the establishment of many modern amenities.

Agioi Saranta Cave Chapel
The chapel is named after the forty martyrs of Sebaste, who died for their faith in Christ in 320. The commander of the Roman army demanded that the Christian soldiers offer sacrifices to the pagan gods, but they refused. After that, they were stripped and put in an ice lake. Next to them a bath was set up for those who refuse Christ. By morning one of the soldiers ran into the bath, however, immediately died there. One of the Romans, Aglaius, seeing the bravery of Christians, undressed himself and joined the people standing in the lake. The Romans, seeing that the martyrs did not freeze, broke their knees, burned them, and threw the bones into the water so that the Christians could not gather them. Three days later the martyrs appeared in a dream to the blessed Peter, the bishop of Sebaste, and ordered him to bury their remains, which was done. The Church commemorates the forty martyrs on March 9 (in Russia - on March 22). On this day the chapel has divine service.

Sunset in Cyprus - Agios Georgios
I filmed this beautiful sunset in late August in Agios Georgios, Paphos. This place is visited by many tourists as it is a small harbour and it gives a perfect view of the sunset. The same area encompasses an archaeological site and an old church. The day I filmed was perfect for watching the sunset as the humidity levels were normal, so the sun appeared visible. For those who have been to Cyprus, they know that you can hardly get a day without very high humidity, thing which makes the sun fade away before it touches the sea. Click on full HD setting for best quality and enjoy the beauty of the sunset accompanied by the pleasant sound of waves!

Saint Nicholas Chapel, Protaras Cyprus
In an attempt to honor their protector Saint, everyone involved in marine professions in Paralimni, decided to build a chapel dedicated to him. The place was found next to the sea overlooking the harbor where they tie their boats. Small in size, whitewashed with blue painted dome, the chapel of Agios Nicolaos (Saint Nicholas), reminds one of the chapels found on Aegean islands.
