Santorini Greece (Part 6) - Red beach & Perissa (HD)
Red beach in the Akrotiri area. Beautiful beach, well known for the unique colour of the sand and the hill behind it. Soaring red lava cliffs which drop right to the sandy shore and into the clear blue sea, make for a majestic setting and one to enjoy. The beach can be reached either by boat (there are several connecting Red Beach with Perissa and Akrotiri or by foot (10 minutes walk from Akrotiri, you have to reach Agios Nikolaos church in Akrotiri next to the excavations area). We suggest to include Red beach into your itenerary.
Perissa is one of Santorini best beaches. Next to Emporio village a long dark sand endless beach.
A feature that makes Perissa unique (besides the crystal water and the smooth sand) is the fact that is the best protected beach from the summer Aegean winds (called Meltemia in Greek). Perissa lies right next to Profitis Ilias mountain, totally protected from the North.

Agios Nikolaos Chapel
One of the most photographed landmarks in this part of Crete, the small Agios Nikolaos Church is the sparkling gem of Georgioupoli. It is, in fact, a whitewashed chapel, built on a small rocky islet and not so easily accessible on foot.
Because of its location, Agios Nikolaos Church appears to be emerging from the Aegean Sea. The chapel is dedicated to St. Nicholas (Ἅγιος Νικόλαος), the patron of sailors. Yes, this is the same saint who inspired the legend of Santa Claus.

Church Bells in Emporio, Santorini, Greece
I love the beautiful sound of church bells, and these in the sweet town of Emporio, on Santorini island in Greece, were music to my ears.
Church of Panagia, Oia, Santorini, Cyclades, Greece, Europe
Oia is a small town and former community in the South Aegean on the islands of Thira (Santorini) and Therasia, in the Cyclades, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it has been part of the municipality of Santorini, of which it is a municipal unit. It covers the whole island of Therasia and the northwesternmost part of Santorini, which it shares with the municipal unit of Santorini. The main street is named Nikolaou Nomikou. The population was 3376 inhabitants at the 2001 census, and the land area is 19.449 km2. Oia was previously known as Apano Meria (Απάνω Μεριά or Επάνω Μεριά, upper side), a name which still occurs locally as Pano Meria, and the inhabitants are still called Apanomerites (Απανωμερίτες). The Ancient Greek Oia was one of the two harbours of ancient Thera and was located in the southeast of the island, where Kamari is now. Oia reached the peak of prosperity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its economic prosperity was based on its merchant fleet, which plied trade in the Eastern Mediterranean, especially from Alexandria to Russia. The two-story captains' houses built on the highest part of the village are a reminder of the village's former affluence. Part of the town was destroyed by the 1956 earthquake. Oia is scenic village in the north west edge of the Santori island within the Cyclades. It extends for almost 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) along the northern edge of the caldera that forms the island of Santorini, at a height of between 70 and 100 metres (230 and 330 ft) above sea level. Immediately to the east is Phinikia (Φοινικιά; Finikia), and about 500 metres (550 yd) to the north is Tholos (Θόλος). The small fishing village of Ormos Armeni (Όρμος Αρμένης) lies below Oia to the south and is reached via steps. There is a ferry connection to Therasia from the harbour village of Ormos Ammoudi (Όρμος Αμμουδιού; also spelled Amoudi) to the west. There are 300 steps down to the port from Oia. The small island of Agios Nikolaos lies to the southwest. It is built on the steep slope of the caldera and the houses and restaurants are built into niches carved into the caldebra on the seaward side. There are narrow passageways and a central square. The sun light hours in this village are much longer than in the Fira town. Its paths are very narrow and hence gets congested during the tourist season. The idyllic surroundings of the town have a complex of white washed blue domed churches and charming, traditional Cycladic houses and cave houses that are carved into the rock face on top of the cliff. It is set in a location which provides excellent views of the sunset over the caldera. To the southwest, the Bay of Armeni, reachable from the town on foot or by mule, was once an important boat-building centre. Small repairs are now done on a single wharf. Excursion boats for trips around the island and ferries to Therasia leave from here. The harbour of Ammoudi on the western side of the town is reached by steep stairs north of Fort Londsa; there are a few tavernas and a pebble beach. The village is located on top of a hill, at about 150 metres (490 ft) elevation, and known as the Eagles nest from where Palia and Nea Kameni volcanoes are seen and also the island of Thirassia. It is situated to the north of the island and Fira is at distance of 11 kilometres (6.8 mi). The main street in the town, in the central square, is the main trekking path which is cobbled, called the Nikalaou Namikaou, which goes up the hill winding round the caldebra. The island is reached from Fira which is the transport terminus of the island. Caldera boat cruise options are available from either Oia or Fira. Oia typifies the white-painted houses of the Cyclades, in many cases built directly into niches which are cave houses used by crew of the ships, on the lip of the volcanic crater, between which are narrow alleys and blue-roofed churches with cupolas. The wealthy ship captains of the late 19th century built neo-classical mansions. These houses are seen built in succession one above the other. In 1976 the town was included in the programme for preservation and development of traditional settlements of the Greek National Tourism Organisation under Aris Konstantinidis. Over 15 years, the programme sought to preserve, restore and find new uses for selected houses and architectural ensembles representative of traditional Greek architecture. Many of the yposkafa spitia (υπόσκαφα σπίτια), simple seamen's houses on the edge of the caldera, became guest-houses, hotels and restaurants. For their work in Oia, the Greek National Tourism Organisation received the Europa Nostra Prize in 1979 and the Prize of the Architecture Biennale in Sofia in 1986.

At the natural carved heart... | Wedding Proposal in Santorini
When Dru contacted us to arrange his proposal to Bhumee, he knew from the start what he wanted. I imagine quite a romantic proposal, would like it to be in a secluded location with stunning views. My intention is to blindfold her and walk her to the location, I will be there with candles and flowers around me he wrote.
From our conversation, Dru made us understand that he wanted a location far from prying eyes and too many tourists.
The natural heart carved on the rock into the side of the Caldera, giving a unique view of the Volcano, seemed the perfect magical setting for Dru to pop the question. Bhumee did the effort to walk all the distance blindfolded and couldn't believe her eyes when she uncovered them!
A few moments after the proposal, they walked to the chapel of Agios Nikolaos, built carefully into the side of Caldera..!

The Majesty of the Megalochori Caldera
The Majesty of the Megalochori Caldera
Off the beaten track doesn’t mean there is no sight or view of the caldera; on the contrary, there are many spots in the off caldera village of Megalochori from where you can admire a charming view to the caldera and the sea. You can walk from Megalochori to the cliffs in a hiking route surrounded by the wild nature and the fragrance of the Great Santorinian vineyard, and once you reach the edge it may seem impossible to climb down the steep cliff.
On a closer look you will discover small pathways, some paved and leveled with steps, and some just walkways worn from the footsteps of courageous visitors who were rewarded with the awe inspiring sensation of exploring a site so wild and untouched.
Windswept rocks, sculpted by the forging power of the volcanic eruption so many thousands of years ago, twists and turns that reveal step by step amazing views to Fira and the Santorini caldera.
Climbing down the cliffs directly beneath the village of Megalochori, you will come across a delightful chapel hidden above the waves called Christos Athermi. The black sand beach under the chapel is a refreshing reward after the rather hard climb down the cliff, but it is certainly a memorable experience filled with picture-perfect images and an almost lunar sensation of solitude and savage wilderness.
When exploring the beauty of the Megalochori and its caldera, you will come across a small selection of restaurants not so known for their gastronomy but more for their peaceful location. Especially at sunset time, the mesmerizing sunset gives its own charm to the food, elevating it to an entirely new experience.
An establishment that attracts a fair share of visitors on the caldera in Megalochori is the Venetsanos winery, above the Athinios port. Built in the traditional Santorinian architectural style of the “canavas”, the winery is open to the oenophile public offering wine tastings, of an incredible array of Santorinian wines, delightful Santorinian treats and even offers its grounds as a wedding venue sometimes a bit touristic but as it has many levels you will easily find a spot for relaxation away from the noisy crowds in a breathtaking environment overlooking the entire caldera and the majestic Aegean Sea.
The caldera of Megalochori may not seem much at a glance, but once you discover its hidden treasures, you will find that in Santorini, even spots away from the main attractions have their own charm and original character.

Thessaloniki, Greece - Agios Dimitrios(Saint Demetrius) Church - Travel Video PostCard
Thessaloniki is Greece's second major economic, industrial, commercial and political centre, and a major transportation hub for the rest of southeastern Europe;
With the Fall of Rome in 476, Thessaloniki became the second-largest city of the Eastern Roman Empire.[18]
Thessaloniki has a lot of Byzantine and paleo-Christian churches that have been declared by UNESCO as World Heritage Monuments in 1988.
The church of Agios Dimitrios(Saint Demetrius) is the most famous church in Thessaloniki. Agios Dimitrios became the patron saint of the city in 1912
(324 A.D.) and made Christianity the official religion of the Byzantine Empire, people built a small church on the place of the martyrdom of Agios Dimitrios, close to the Roman baths.
In 413 AD, a bigger three-aisled basilica was founded
in 634 A.D. Shortly afterwards, an even bigger five-isled basilica was built, which remains till today and constitutes the largest church of Greece.
The crypt of the saint, accessed by a staircase behind the sanctuary, is said to be the site where the saint was killed by the Roman soldiers and buried. His crypt was converted into an exhibition area in 1988,
Today, his memory is celebrated every year, along with the deliberation of the city, with a big parade and a glorious Mass.
Underneath the Church of St Demetrios is the place where St Demetrios, Thessaloniki's patron saint, was martyred.
As the level of the ground gradually rose over the centuries, this area acquired the form of a crypt. According both to tradition and to archaeological findings, it was an old bathhouse, in which Demetrios was imprisoned and eventually martyred in ad 303. In the 5th century, when the first Church of St Demetrios was built, the site of his martyrdom was incorporated into the church and the fountain was converted into a source of holy water. In the years that followed, the fountain acquired basins, from which the faithful could collect myron, the sweet-smelling oil produced by the saint's relics. The crypt filled up with earth during the period of Ottoman rule and was not rediscovered until after the fire of 1917. It has been restored by the Archaeological Service and was converted into an exhibition space in 1988.
The first church on the spot was constructed in the early 4th century AD, replacing a Roman bath. . Repeatedly gutted by fires, the church eventually was reconstructed as a five-aisled basilica in 629--634. This was the surviving form of the church much as it is today. The most important shrine in the city, it was probably larger than the local cathedral. The historic location of the latter is now unknown.
