In addition to the temple districts, in recent years the medieval centre of Agrigento with its narrow and romantic lanes has attracted an increasing number of visitors.In the 3rd century B.C. Akragas was conquered by the Carthaginians and later by the Romans, Byzantines and Arabs and over the years the size of the legendary ancient Polis was gradually reduced to that of a village. But Agrigento enjoyed a further period of prosperity under the Norman King, Roger The Second, who declared it a diocesan town. The classical splendour of the ancient temples of Agrigento leave an indelible impression in the memories of all those who experience them.

Can't believe this is Italy! Tour of The Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, Sicily

Who knew that Italy had so many well-kept Greek Temples? Well ok, some people like Rick Steves maybe, but I always thought you could only see this kind of scene in Greece - glad I was wrong! Agrigento is the site of Ancient Greek city called Akragas (notice the similarities?) and The Valley of the Temples contains some of the most beautiful and best kept Greek Temples outside of Greece, for which reason is surely worth a visit if you are ever in Sicily or love everything Greece related. It is a World Heritage Site for a reason after all!
The whole town of Agrigento is something truly unique when experienced for the first time - The Valley of the Temples, which is actually a ridge and not a valley but try hyping up The Ridge of the Temples? Yeah, not as sexy... Anyhow, the Valley overlooks the perched town of the Agrigento, which itself takes on a yellowish-brown colour that matches the loess coloured soil and adds the perfect element to make the whole scene feel surreal. Honestly, I thought of Egypt when I first heard the name Valley of the Temples, and the nature surrounding the area does absolutely nothing to displace the feeling of grandeur elicited by such thoughts - it delivers the magic!
During our tour, we started off by visiting the Temple of Hera (or Juno in Roman mythology), who of course was the wife of Zeus. Built in 450 BC, parts of the temple were damaged by fire in 406 BC and restored during Roman times. The temple really looks to be in very good shape, and according to our tour guide a lot of this had to do with its Doric style that is better suited to combat earthquakes.
We then see what the fortifications look like - which were basically directly carved out from a mountain! Crazy! And if that wasn't crazy enough, we then learned that tombs, called arcosolia (pl. of arcosolium), were also carved out from the mountains there. I can't even imagine how you would do that...
We then stopped for a little snack to refuel and chat with a friendly passer-by, to then get to the Temple of Concordia. This Temple is incredibly well-preserved, and a real treat to explore, and also one of the most notable example of Ancient Greek buildings existing anywhere today. A reason for why it was so well-kept can be attributed to its conversion into a Christian church.
They also have Girgentana goats on the premisses brought to Sicily and Agrigento all the way from Afghanistan in the 4th century BC!
We then explored the Temple of Olympian Zeus, but sadly this temple was more or less destroyed. We also saw one of the atlas giants in the Olympeion field before finally taking the train back to the start.
The set up in the Valley of the Temples is really neat - a narrow road basically connects all the sites, which makes it incredibly easy and convenient to explore. So you can walk it one way and then just simply take the train on your way back.
Our tour guide was Sergio Bruccato. He was very insightful and kept us interested and engaged the whole time. Highly recommended if you are ever in town and consider doing the Valley of the Temples (which will likely be THE reason why you are in town anyways). Here's his contact info:

The BEST SIGHTS in SICILY? Exploring Valley of the Temples -- Agrigento, Sicily, Italy // 156
Behold! The most majestic ruins I've seen in Europe so far. The Valley of the Temples (Valle dei Templi) in Agrigento, Sicily, Italy, are much more spectacular than I expected. Honestly, I was getting a little bored with ruins in Italy, but I was told I must visit Agrigento.
I'm so glad I listened to those who urged me to go! Agrigento's (formerly Akragas, a Greek city in southern Sicily) ruins of the Valley of the Temples are huge with plaques throughout the miles-wide park explaining the importance of the structures you see. I heard Rick Steves say that if you want to see Greek ruins, go to Sicily! In Agrigento, you can see the outstanding Valle dei Templi and begin to truly appreciate Sicily's rich and diverse history.
If asked What are the best sights in Sicily? I'd immediately respond with Agrigento on the list. The Valley of the Temples is not just a must-see, it's easily one of the best sights in Sicily.

The MOST AMAZING AIRBNB! -- Agrigento, Sicily, Italy // 155
I now realize what that superhost tick means on AirBnB! This place was so wonderful. Between the abundance of food available including fresh fruit and homemade wine, and the sea-view balcony, this has got to be one of the best AirBnBs in Italy.
I stayed in Villagio Mose, a small town very close to Agrigento. In Villagio Mose, I was able to find an inexpensive AirBnB right on the coast. I stayed here for the night to go see the Valley of the Temples the next morning. Valley of the Temples is the ruined city of Akragas in Sicily. Akragas used to be an elaborate Greek city, and a decent portion of the temples are still standing today.

A day in Agrigento
Ancient Greek city of Akragas (Agrigento) Sicily
Akragas (modern Agrigento), a Greek colony located on the southern coast of Sicily, was founded in 582 bce by an expedition from Gela led by oikists Aristonous and Pystilos (Thucydides 6.4.4).
Agrigento was founded on a plateau overlooking the sea, with two nearby rivers, the Hypsas and the Akragas, and a ridge to the north offering a degree of natural fortification. Its establishment took place around 582-580 BC and is attributed to Greek colonists from Gela, who named it Akragas.
Akragas grew rapidly, becoming one of the richest and most famous of the Greek colonies of Magna Graecia. It came to prominence under the 6th-century tyrants Phalaris and Theron, and became a democracy after the overthrow of Theron's son Thrasydaeus. Although the city remained neutral in the conflict between Athens and Syracuse, its democracy was overthrown when the city was sacked by the Carthaginians in 406 BC. Akragas never fully recovered its former status, though it revived to some extent under Timoleon in the latter part of the 4th century.
The city was disputed between the Romans and the Carthaginians during the First Punic War. The Romans laid siege to the city in 262 BC and captured it after defeating a Carthaginian relief force in 261 BC and sold the population into slavery. Although the Carthaginians recaptured the city in 255 BC the final peace settlement gave Punic Sicily and with it Akragas to Rome. It suffered badly during the Second Punic War (218-201 BC) when both Rome and Carthage fought to control it. The Romans eventually captured Akragas in 210 BC and renamed it Agrigentum, although it remained a largely Greek-speaking community for centuries thereafter. It became prosperous again under Roman rule and its inhabitants received full Roman citizenship following the death of Julius Caesar in 44 BC.

Agrigento is a hilltop city on Sicily's southwest shore. It's known for the ruins of the ancient city of Akragas in the Valley of the Temples, a vast archaeological site with well-preserved Greek temples. On the modern city's outskirts is the Museo Archeologico Regionale 'Pietro Griffo', with artifacts and a telamon (giant male figure). West lies Scala dei Turchi, a stepped white cliff overlooking sandy beaches.
Up the hill from the dazzling Valley of the Temples, modern Agrigento is not an immediately appealing prospect. Huge elevated motorways converge on a ragged hilltop centre scarred by brutish tower blocks and riddled with choking traffic. However, hidden behind this depressing outer ring is an attractive medieval kernel with some fine accommodation and a lively evening buzz. The main thoroughfare running through Agrigento's medieval core is Via Atenea, an attractive strip lined with smart shops, trattorias and bars. Narrow alleyways wind upwards off the main street, past tightly packed palazzi (mansions) interspersed with historic churches.
Agrigento is situated on Sicily's southern coast, and the town's Valley of the Temples (Valle dei Templi) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the greatest legacies of ancient Greece. This parade of well-preserved Doric temples, just outside town, dates back to the fifth and sixth centuries BC and is what remains of the Greek city of Akragas.
The temples are spread along a rocky ridge a short way to the south of the medieval town centre, in a designated archaeological park. You can walk there, or catch a bus from the railway station. Food options are limited so you might wish to take a picnic lunch.
The town's Museo Archeologico, between the town and the archaeological site, has a wide range of exhibits from the area, including statues and grave goods. As elsewhere in Italy, there are reductions for EU under-25s and students, and free entry for under-18s and over-65s (bring your passport/proof of status).
A more recent tourist sight is the childhood home of writer Luigi Pirandello (Six Characters in Search of an Author), which has been turned into a museum. His Casa Natale (birthplace) can be visited in the dramatically-named suburb of Caos. Agrigento offers a full day's worth of sightseeing, and is a long way from the other major tourist destinations of Sicily. Consequently most visitors stay overnight in the town or nearby - this is especially advisable for those relying on the infrequent public transport.
An exceptional historic testimony to Magna Graecia’s presence in this area, as well as to subsequent epochs, the archaeological site at Agrigento, in Sicily, was inserted onto the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. The remains from the Hellenic city, and additionally from the successive Punic-Roman era, the imposing Doric temples – to this day almost completely intact – the agora, the pagan and Christian necropolises, and the crawling network of subterranean acqueducts, constitute the richness of this site. Extending over approximately 1,300 hectares, it recounts a millenary history that began in the 6th Century B.C. with the foundation of the ancient Greek colony of Akragas.
