Ahn Jung-geun memorial opens in China
A memorial hall to honor famous Korean patriot Ahn Jung-geun has opened in the northeastern Chinese city of Harbin.
Harbin railway station is where, in 1909, Ahn shot and killed Ito Hirobumi, who had served as the prime minister of Japan four times before becoming resident-general of Korea in 1905.
Ahn was arrested at the scene of shooting and secretly executed in March 1910 by the Japanese government.
The memorial hall consists of exhibition rooms telling the story of Ahn's life, and shows the exact spot where the shooting took place.
Ahn devoted himself to the education of the Korean people and later joined armed resistance in northeast China and Russia.

Ahn Jung-geun, a True Korean
Born in Haeju, Hwanghae Province in 1879, he became the assassin of the Resident-General of Korea. Ahn Jung-geun, a true Korean.
He's only dream was peace in Asia and the independence of Korea.
What kind of peace did Ahn Jung-geun promote in East Asia?
He hoped for a East Asan peace forum in which representatives from China, Korea, and Japan would participate, the opening and cooperative management of Lushun, the creation of a joint bank, and the use of a common currency. In short, he wished for East Asian regional peace based on cooperation and symbiosis.
Though unfinished, On Peace in East Asia claims that if Korea, China, and Japan do not invade each other and repsect each other's independence while coming together in cooperation to block out the West, true East Asian peace would be achieved.

New footage of Ahn Jung-geun discovered
And back here in Korea....where new film footage of Korean independence fighter Ahn Jung-geun may have emerged.
In 1909, Ahn assassinated Hirobumi Ito, who served as the prime minister of Japan four times before becoming resident-general of Korea.
A New York Times article from August 14th, 1910, recounts the details of the incident, and says that two films of the assassination were brought to America.
It said the films were shown at Ahn's trial and later confiscated by the Japanese government.
Tokyo's public broadcaster NHK did show three scenes from the footage, but excluded key moments that may shed fresh light on the famous Korean patriot.
Korean groups that commemorate the legacy of Ahn say they welcomed the news and said they would continue efforts to find the historic footage.

The Statue of Brothers is an 18 meter wide and 11-meter high symbol of the Korean War. It’s a scene where a family's elder brother, an officer, and his younger brother, a North Korean soldier, meet in a battlefield and express reconciliation.
The tomb-shaped dome was built with pieces of granite collected from nationwide locations symbolizing the sacrifices made by our patriots. The crack in the dome stands for the division of Korea and the hope for reunification. Inside the dome is a wall painting that expresses the spirit of the Korean people to overcome the national tragedy and a map plate of the 16 UN Allied Nations that dispatched troops to the war.

Korea condemns Japan's remarks on Korean independence fighter
Korea's foreign ministry on Monday strongly condemned remarks made by a top Japanese official,... who called Korean independence fighter Ahn Jung-geun a terrorist.
Earlier in the day, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said that Ahn was a terrorist,... in response to the opening of a memorial hall to honor the Korean hero in the Chinese city of Harbin.
The foreign ministry said it was shocking that a person who speaks on behalf of the Japanese government made such ignorant remarks that go against history.
It said that Ahn is a highly-respected figure not only in Korea but around the world for the sacrifice he made to achieve peace in Asia.
In 1909, Ahn shot and killed Hirobumi Ito, the Japanese governor of Korea at the time.
The ministry said Ito was the main culprit who led Japan's invasion of Korea,... and accused the Abe administration of glorifying Japan's imperialistic past.
Looking for the remains of patriot Ahn Jung-geun after the Panmunjeom Declaration
108년째 찾지 못한 안중근 의사의 유골...그의 마지막 유언은 이루어질 수 있을까
More than a century has passed since Ahn Jung-geun died after fighting for the country's freedom.
And yet, his remains are nowhere to be found.
Which is why the two Koreas are planning an excavation project dedicated to that cause.
According to our Hong Yoo, hopes are high, progress will be made soon, to bring him back home. (Even in heaven, I will invest all my energy for our independence.
AHN Jung-geun)
Ahn Jung-geun, who fought for Korea's independence and killed Ito Hirobumi, one of the main people behind Japan's annexation of Korea, is yet to be brought home.
Ahn's remains are known to be buried somewhere near the Lushun Prison but have yet to be found and his tomb waiting for him in Seoul remains empty.
Little progress has been made toward finding the remains of patriot Ahn Jung-geun since the last time South Korea tried to look for the corpse with the help of China in 2008.
But there are renewed hopes of finding Ahn's remains thanks to the Panmunjeon Declaration in which the South Korean President Moon Jae-in, and the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un agreed in April to make joint efforts to find Ahn's body.
Past searches were not successful as China, which has access to important information for the excavation, was not so cooperative.
The Chinese government stated that the request for the excavation of Ahn Jung-geun's remains must come from both South and North Korea since Ahn's homeland is officially Hwanghae-do Province, located in North Korea. With China having clearly stated its stance, the only way to start another excavation is through cooperation between the two Koreas.
When South Korea requested for topographic maps of the prison, China rejected the request saying that the region was a military base in the past so the Chinese military won't allow such information to be shared.
So South Korea's request for protection of the land where it is most likely that Ahn's body might be was also ignored and the area went through a lot of changes.
We think they must have carried out his body through this door and they must have used this road to get here.
Cooperation from Japan is also important. Perhaps the most crucial clue to find the body is in Japanese hands.
The document that specifically states that Ahn was buried in one of the public cemeteries of the prison is kept by Japan. The Japanese government is really meticulous at keeping records of everything. As such, there must be a document with the exact location of Ahn’s remains.
We keep asking Japan for it, but Tokyo has been uncooperative regarding our request. Moreover, this is not an issue that can be resolved in a short amount of time.
And to find such a document, research from both the government and private sector is needed, and the two must work together for the project to be a success.
Ahn Jung-geun’s last words were “bury my body again in my homeland when our nation’s sovereignty is restored.” Hopefully, if the momentum for peace between the two Koreas continues, Ahn’s wish could be at last fulfilled.

Koreans commemorate patriot Ahn Jung-geun's spirit on Oct. 26
10월26일, 안중근 의사 하얼빈 의거 109주년...안 의사의 정신과 업적 기리다
Koreans remember the spirit of Ahn Jung-geun on October 26th.
This is the day when the patriot shot a Japanese politician as part of the resistance against Japanese colonialism.
Yoon Jung-min explains significance of the day.
October 26th marks the day Korean patriot Ahn Jung-geun assassinated a Japanese politician to resist against Japanese colonialism.
On that day in 1909 at a train station in Harbin, China, Ahn shot the Japanese governor-general of Korea, Hirobumi Ito, who had played a major part in Japan’s annexation of Korea in the 1900s.
Until Ahn was put to death in 1910 in the Chinese city of Lushun, he fought for peace, not only for his own nation, but for the whole of East Asia. He wrote a famous essay On Peace in East Asia while in prison. The essay, which criticizes imperialism, remains unfinished.
Ahn was devoted to education. He ran a private school in 1906 and believed educating and enlightening the Korean people could help maintain the country's independence against encroaching world powers.
Despite the Korean government's decades-long efforts to find his remains, the whereabouts of Ahn's body is still unknown.
Ahn had two final wishes: the independence of the Korean peninsula, and for his body to be returned home after his execution.
His patriotism and spirit remains in the hearts of every Korean to this day.

South Korea's first ever nationwide survey of current situation of ‘dog farms’
This is a translation of Korean news on jtbc, reported on September 9, 2015 [Exclusive Report] 2 million dogs in the dog farms … First ever nationwide survey of current situation of ‘dog farms’ [단독] 200만 마리가…전국 ‘개 사육장’ 첫 현황 조사
[Exclusive Report] 2 million dogs in the dog farms … First ever nationwide survey of current conditions/situation of ‘dog farms’
[Anchor]
Even though we eat dogs, officially we aren’t eating dogs and that’s our reality. Since that is the case, currently there are no regulations throughout the processes of breeding, selling and buying meat dogs. The government has grasped the situation for the first time and found out that there are 2 million meat dogs nationwide. Dog farms which don’t even have excrement treatment facilities are countless.
A reporter, Young-Tak Yoo, brings you this exclusive report.
[Reporter]
There are dozens of large vinyl houses where 4 to 5 dogs are cramped into each of the small cages.
Underneath the cages, excrement is piled up high.
There are over a thousand dogs being bred in this dog farm alone.
However, up until now, the government were not aware of how many of these dog farms existed.
That’s because there are no laws regulating it.
Seung-Rae Kim / Korea Animal Rights Advocates: In the Livestock Products Sanitary Control Act, dogs are excluded as livestock. That means slaughtering and distributing dogs is illegal.
In this current situation, we have confirmed that for the first time ever, the Ministry of Environment is currently in the process of identifying dog farms by each local municipality, nationwide.
First, the survey found that there are 719 dog farms breeding more than 100,000 dogs in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province.
Four out of ten dog farms were breeding 100 to 500 dogs and there were five places that were breeding over 1000 dogs.
216 tons of excrement are produced per day, but it cannot be determined to where 25 tons of this excrement is deposited.
National Assemblywoman Sang-Jeong Sim/ Environment and Labor Committee of National Assembly: Given the fact that the local governments have been ignoring this issue, our government must take the initiative to manage it directly.
Currently the survey is about 5% completed (progressed), and it is estimated that a whopping 2 million dogs are being bred in about 17,000 dog farms around the country.
