Spirit Hoops: Ojibwe grandmothers inspire sacred art
Starting with cedar hoops made by Ojibwe women in the late 1800's, artist and family therpaist Jeanne Wiger, Ph.D, created unique, 3 dimensional paintings within them to honor the grandmothers who made them and the feminine energy they held.
The Spirit Hoops are eight two-sided, three-dimensional contemporary paintings, each depicting a symbolic direction, time of day, season of the year, or aspect of life framed by one of the 36 hoops made by Ojibwe women over a century ago.
The works of art are composed of symbols gathered from many parts of the world and many parts of history. Each hoop is a complete work, Either side of the hoop is a study in itself, dealing with a different aspect of life. There is no front or back, but a continuum of life.
The imagery of the Spirit Hoops is rich with cultural symbols and archetypes, particularly ancient feminine
