Ahu Te Pito Kura on Easter Island
Ahu Te Pito Kura has the largest moai that was ever moved at 32 feet and 82 tons. It is also said that Te Pito Kura was the last statue to be pulled down, probably some time after 1838. we walk over to the left side towards the bay where there is a spherical rock about three feet in diameter with four smaller rocks around it. Legend states that Hotu Matu’a brought this stone from his original homeland. The stone is said to have special powers, in fact if you pass a compass over the stone the needle changed direction, which we tested out, I even tried it with my iphone and it did move around.

Easter Island, Part 2 - AHU TE PITO KURA
Arfur and Shelly Visit an island that they have been wanting to see for many years. An island shrouded in mystery. An island where great heads and bodies carved in volcanic rock stand guard along the coast. Easter Island - home of the Moai.
This island is also known as 'Rapa Nui' in Tahitian and 'Isla de Pascua' in Spanish and belongs to Chile.
This clip shows us visiting AHU TE PITO KURA, which is the resting place of the biggest Moai on Easter Island (around 10-11m tall). As was the fate with all of the Moai here, this huge specimin lays on the ground after being toppled from it's Ahu (platform of stone). All of the Moai that are seen standing on Easter Island now, have been re-erected at some time in the past (and repaired as necessary!).
Also at this location is the TE PITO KURA itself (Navel of the Earth/Light) which is basically a large rounded stone with four smaller stones and a short, circular stone wall, apparently shipped from Tahiti.
Unfortunately, whilst Shelly was reading the details of this particular location from the Lonely Planet Guide, the wind was almost drowning her out....sorry about that....
Mysterious Magnetic Stone at Ahu Te Pito Kura on Easter Island
The Mysterious Magnetic Stone at Ahu Te Pito Kura on Easter Island.
The Rapa Nui term Te Pito Kura translates to Golden Navel, or Navel of Light, while Te Pito Te Henua translates to Navel of the World; which is what Rapa Nui is often referred to by its residents, referencing its place in Polynesian mythology. This specific site is the navel of the navel, as it were, located on the island's shore near Anakena, the spot where Rapa Nui's legendary founding figure, Hotu Matura, is said to have landed. Stone barriers surround a worked stone sphere (the navel itself) measuring some 75 centimeters in diameter, reputedly brought by Hotu Matura from overseas.

Ahu Tongariki on Easter Island
Ahu Tongaiki, probably one of the most photographed Ahu’s on the Island and the biggest. It contains 15 moai that have been recently restored after the Ahu was destroyed in the 1960’s by a Tsunami. On the approach to the Ahu you pass by a lonely moai know as the “Travelling Moai” due to the fact it went on a tour around Japan a few years ago. The size of the 15 statues is immense and with them being on top of their platform increases their scale as you look up at them. There is also some petroglyphs carved into the ground in front of the Ahu showing a turtle.
