The building of the Central Department Store of Kyrgyzstan is the brainchild of architects Sobolevsky and Peresvetov. The project appeared in 1970. The construction was completed on August 14, 1974. In the first years of its existence, the Central Department Store was designed for 400 retail locations located on three floors. Now there are six of them. The opening was a big event in the life of the city, as the first escalators in the republic, passenger and freight elevators were installed at the Central Department Store.
In 1981, the Central Department Store was the only scenery for the filming of the feature film Goodness directed by K. Akmataliev film studio Kyrgyzfilm.
One of the first agreements concluded with large foreign companies was a contract in November 1996 with the Kazakh-Swiss Trading House to open a section of famous Swiss watches.
In May 2001, the Central Department Store met its millionth visitor. It was one of the very first grandiose events in its scope with the presentation of prizes involving the media.During the “Tulip Revolution,” TSUM’s management, staff, and tenants were able to protect the mall from devastation. Not a single item was stolen, and hundreds of volunteers came to support the Central Department Store.
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of independence of Kyrgyzstan, the TsUM administration updated the fountain complex located nearby. Fountains with willows appeared in the capital 40 years ago and have become a truly iconic place in Bishkek. Several generations of Frunze residents and Bishkek residents know the fountains at the Central Department Store as a place for dates, meetings and friendly gatherings. Spreading trees, even in the heat of the day, gave coolness and comfort. But this is not all: for the convenience of all TSUM guests, now there are a lot of benches, hanging wicker chairs near the shopping center, as well as curly tiles made in the national style.
The opening of the reconstructed fountains gathered a lot of people, and they all greatly appreciated the result of the work that architects, sculptors and workers did.
It was planned to hold a concert for all those gathered, but because of the tragic events of the fire in Moscow on August 27, when 17 of our fellow citizens died, the concert was decided to be canceled.
All the funds that were planned to be spent on the concert, and about 4.5 million soms, the administration of the Central Department Store “Aichurek” sent to the families of the dead women and girls.
After the ceremony of cutting the red ribbon, the fountain complex near the Central Department Store was officially opened. Now everyone can see the light and music fountains, sit on comfortable benches, try out hanging swings and understand how beautiful our city Bishkek is with its unique atmosphere.
