The British Horseback Archery Championships
Horseback archery is the latest equestrian sport to come to the UK; imported from Hungary and Germany just a few years ago. There are two main styles of Horseback Archery and at the British Championship the Korean Discipline is used.
The sport is a combination of horse riding and the skill of archery. It takes place on a 100-metre fenced course and involves a full gallop with no reins, loading arrows into the bow and shooting at a large target from different angles. Points are marked both with your arrow to target score along with your time down the track, these are totalled and make the final score.
The history of the sport originates from the people of the Steppe region such as the Mongols, Persians, Turks, Syrians, Sarmatians and the Huns. The military practice later turned into an equestrian sport but was only really practised by a handful of people in countries such as Korea and Japan where their traditions lived on. It was brought back to life by the Hungarian, Kassia Lajos in approximately 1988 and he introduced the sport to Europe.
Since becoming a discipline in its own right, it has grown in popularity and spread through too many countries including Hungary, Germany, Poland, France, Greece, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, the US and now the UK. At the British Championship competitors had to hit 1, 2 or 3 arrows on the run, the latter being the hardest as by the last shot competitors often have to twist to aim at a rear target.
There is clearly an adrenalin surge in this sport but the combination of skills used makes it a hard sport to master.
With a heritage of success in both separate disciplines, it seems likely that this sport has a bright future in the UK. After the day's competition it was Neil Payne from Somerset who was top dog.

Archery tournament - Bhutan
Archery has been described as a “celebration of the Bhutanese way of life.” Although archery became Bhutan’s national sport only in 1971, love for the sport dates back more than 1500 years, when an Indian prince proved his aim, accuracy, and strength in an archery contest to win the heart of a beautiful princess. Historically, the bow and arrow have aided the Bhutanese in battle, and today archery is a symbol of festivity and athletic competition.

Woman Archer On The Ground Longbow Archery Practice
Playing with my English Longbow on the ground with floor work. Trying out different movements and positioning of my bow and body with various seated, kneeling, tilting, horizontal, crouching, extending the legs ...
Pushing my boundaries and skills with as many ways as I can without standing on my feet. I have written some captions to show some of what I am doing, with my own version for describing them. If they have names to them, please leave a comment below, I would be interested to know.

It is amazing how many ways the body and bow can be made to basically hit an ordinary round straw target. It is very relaxing and helps me to focus on many areas with technique and form as I twist, stretch, pull and bend in various directions.
It also helps with being creative and of course enjoying the art of it all.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this video and perhaps even got something out of it for your own archery development, particularly in the field for traditional and instinctive archers.

Volley Fire
Clip from movie, The Patriot.
Video is for educational purposes.
Make ready, present, FIRE!
Make ready, take aim, FIRE!
Volley fire, as a military tactic, is the practice of having a line of soldiers all fire their weapons simultaneously at the enemy forces on command, usually to make up for inaccuracy, slow rate of fire, and limited range, and to create a maximum effect.
The history of volley fire dates back before guns to use by archers, at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, for instance. One example of this is the Mongol Army. Another is the Persian invasion force of King Xerxes, whose arrows were said to block the sun. In the eighteenth century, the British would use volley fire to make up for the inaccuracy and limited range (100 yards) of their musket, the Brown Bess. Armies approached one another in linear formations. British soldiers would fire volleys in the general direction of the enemy, by ranks. The command they were given was to level weapons, rather than to aim. The shooters might be formed in three ranks, with the front rank firing simultaneously, then the second rank, offset, then the third, after which the first rank was ready to fire again. Effective volley fire required practice in swiftly completing the required motions. In the American Civil War volley fire was used quite effectively, since the effective range and rate of fire were greater than in earlier centuries.
In modern times the use of volley fire is limited, since automatic weapons can devastate massed infantry.

Recurve and Longbow Shooting Tips - Filming your archery shot
Shooting a bow and arrow with consistent accuracy is something that many archers strive for their entire lives. The key to consistency is developing a repeatable shot sequence. In this video Clay Hayes shows how he uses the slow motion setting on a smartphone to film and review his archery shooting technique.
Both the iPhone and android phones have slow motion capabilities up to 240 frames per second. Although this isn't fast enough to get the full effect of archers paradox it is adequate for reading arrow flight and picking out small inconsistencies in your archery shot.
There are a few different camera angles that will help you isolate different parts of your shot. In this video Clay is shooting a primitive selfbow but these techniques will work for any recurve or longbow and even compound bows.
Setting up the camera to film straight on or slightly to the side will show if you are dropping your bow hand upon release. Filming from the side can help show any forward movement of the string hand or collapse during the release. A shot from behind the drawing arm elbow can show archery form and collapse during the shot.
Using the slow motion capabilities of your smartphone is tremendously useful for tuning arrows and perfecting your traditional archery shot sequence. So set up your phone, film a few shots and take a close look and what might be throwing your shots off!

Yew Heavy Warbow. Beginner bowyer attempts to make a 100lb war bow. Part I. English Longbow
Yew warbow. Part One. Beginner bowyer attempts to make a 100lb warbow. The famous English yew longbow of medieval times was an awesome weapon of war - and I am chronicling my attempt to make a replica of a medieval warbow from a stave of yew. This first video shows me working the bow stave from a half log to a roughed out shape of a longbow and ready for the careful handwork necessary to encourage the wood to bend as if it was a segment of a circle. Experienced bowyers would no doubt make two bows from this half-log but I opted for safety and used the centre section of this piece of German grown yew. My wish is to make a bow that is similar in power to artillery bows used in the famous battles of Crecy, Poitiers and Agincourt during the One Hundred Years War - a bow that requires at least 100lbs of pull to fully draw back the bowstring. I am an inexperienced bowyer with just five bows' experience so the challenge seems immense so do join me for the rest of this short series to see if I can achieve my aim to build a 100lb warbow.
