Dick Francis' autobiography The Sport of Queens describes the steeplechase course at Aintree - first Grand National in 1839. Using Google street view I was able to see what riding the course would be like. The race is 4 miles, 2 furlongs and 74 yards long.

UK: AINTREE RACE COURSE: BOMB SCARE AT GRAND NATIONAL UPDATE
English/Nat
The Grand National, the world's most famous steeplechase, will be run Monday just two days after it was abandoned by bomb warnings that forced 70-thousand people to be evacuated from the Aintree race course.
The 150th Aintree running of the famous race, first staged in 1839, will be begin at 5 p.m. (1600 GMT) Monday after being cancelled for the first time in its history.
British racing is still in shock after the cancellation of its showcase event.
Early Sunday morning saw hundreds of race-goers waiting patiently for Merseyside police to unlock the gates of Aintree's car parks.
The crowd of 70-thousand was evacuated after two coded bomb warnings -- believed to be the work of the Irish Republican Army -- were received just 30 minutes before the scheduled start of the race.
The news was all over the papers today, and not just on the sports pages.
Every hotel room in Liverpool was full, forcing many fans to spend the night in emergency accommodation across the city.
Some however were luckier, with total strangers putting people up for the night.
SOUNDBITE:
Q: What sort of night have you had, what's it been like?
A: We were very lucky in that we got somewhere to stay. We did have a two hour drive around Southport in a taxi trying to find somewhere. Then we phoned the local radio station and someone had phoned in and there was four of us and they put us up for the night. They gave us beds, baths cups of tea, everything.
SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop
SOUNDBITE:
Some 7-thousand vehicles are in the process of being checked individually. Whilst that is a significant task in anybody's language, what I can say to members of the public is their vehicles .. the course will be available to them reclaim their vehicles sometime today. I can't be more specific than that but people will be able to get their vehicles and their property back today.
SUPER CAPTION: Paul Stephenson, Assistant Chief Constable, Merseyside Police
SOUNDBITE:
We would however, like to announce that the Martel Grand National, which had to be postponed yesterday because of a bomb threat, will be rescheduled for tomorrow, Monday the 7th of April at 5pm.
SUPER CAPTION: Charles Barnett, Managing Director of Aintree Race Course
SOUNDBITE:
Well, the Grand National is a once in a year occasion for many High Street punters -- about 15 (m) million people would've had a bet and probably up to 70 (m) million pounds turned over. All of those bets will stand on the race when it run on Monday afternoon. Obviously if punters had a bet on Saturday on a horse that now doesn't line up, then those bets are refundable and their stakes will come back to them.
SUPER CAPTION: David Hood, spokesman for William Hill
SOUNDBITE:
Almost certainly. I think people will find this was a distraction for them on Saturday. It is an inconvenience. They won't be pleased about it but they will still want to have that once a year flutter. So I'm sure that 99.9 per cent of bets will run onto Monday afternoon.

Betfred Becher Chase Day 2014 at Aintree Racecourse

Wasn't it Ladies Day Aintree takes its toll racegoers kick off their heels and spill out of dresses
Wasn't it Ladies Day? A booze-fuelled day at Aintree takes its toll as worse for wear racegoers kick off their heels and spill out of dresses (and some of them even need a lie down!)
Today is the most fashionable day of the racing festival with a prize on offer for Best Dressed Lady
Winner received a £35,000 black Range Rover Evoque and a beauty hamper
Early arrivals set the bar high in figure hugging lace dresses and elegant cocktail hats
Yesterday, revellers ignored demure style guide and dressed in very racy outfits
After weeks of preening and outfit preparation, racegoers were more than ready to let their hair down as soon as they hit Aintree today.
Champagne, wine and beer flowed from the early morning, with some swigging bubbles direct from the bottle, so it was no wonder that some people were feeling a little the worse for wear and in need of a siesta as Ladies Day wore on.
While revellers had turned out in their best outfits for Ladies Day, glamour was quickly forgotten about as many kicked off their shoes and sat on the ground as weariness got the better of them.
One woman lay flat on the ground with her eyes closed, looking as if she was taking 40 winks while the action swirled around her.
Others ended up exposing a little more than they bargained for as thigh-skimming dresses rode up to reveal their underwear as they flailed about, trying to put their shoes back on.
Thousands of glamorous revellers flocked to the Merseyside course, dressed to the nines, in the hope of winning the much-coveted style award on Ladies Day.
But it was 64-year-old Faith Amond, from County Carlow, Ireland, who beat off thousands of stylish hopefuls to claim the Style Award, winning prizes including a £35,000 Range Rover Evoque and £1,000 of shopping vouchers.

RACEHORSE DEATHS - 'A HAT FOR CHANGE' - ROYAL ASCOT 2016 - PART 1
Wildlife Presenter Anneka Svenska wears largest hat in Ascot history containing over 1000 roses to symbolise equine deaths from horse racing since 2007. Created by milliner to the stars Louis Mariette, the hat hopes to create a conversation to how welfare standards can be improved at British racecourses.
PART 2 CAN BE WATCHED HERE:
People often just blame the steeplechase races for horse fatalities, but surprisingly Ascot has had its fair share of deaths, it actually ranks as Britain’s most dangerous Flat (turf) venue. In 2014, four horses died unbeknown to flamboyant racegoers: Case Statement died from a broken lower leg; Inchila and Sir Graham Wade suffered a fractured pelvis; and Tiger Cliff collapsed and died after the race. Two horses then died in 2015: Stravagante
who was destroyed due to a fractured cannon-bone and King Edmund who fell and broke his neck.
Anneka and Louis decided to create this hat this year, accompanied by this film talking about why and how horse welfare standards can be improved. The horse racing industry is deeply embedded in the British Culture however there is so much room for improvements.
Anneka would like to:
• END NATIONAL HUNT RACING. The Grand National and Cheltenham festival races are two of the largest and most dangerous steeplechases which have seen 40 deaths in the last ten years. Cheltenham saw seven deaths this year and five at Aintree.
Did you know that approximately one in every 37 horses who starts a season’s racing will have perished by the end of it. They will have died as a result of a racecourse or training injury, or they will be killed after being judged to be no longer financially viable
• END TO THE WHIPPING OF HORSES which has been shown to be ineffective and can cause painful welts. The use of the whip urges the horse to go beyond what it is able to comfortably do, and can result in injuries and stress. Norway banned the whip in 1982 and there is no reason why the UK cannot follow their example. In 2014, there were 586 breaches of the British Horseracing Authority rules against excessive whip use. Racing Writer of the Year, Alan Lee, declared in The Times that Royal Ascot is ‘a stage on which jockeys have regularly been guilty of a win-at-all-costs attitude with the whip in the principal races’.
• THE SHORTENING OF COURSES. Many horses can suffer stress, strokes and collapse if the course is too long
